[Archive] Most interesting Space Marine chapter?

Thommy H:

If I ever did Salamanders, they’d just be black, not jet-black. I think it’s a really horrible bit of fluff.

Grimstonefire:

I find the Space Wolves are really quite interesting, but it’s probably just because they are so similar to Dwarfs.

The Grey Knights (if you can call them a chapter) are really cool as well imo. The Blood angels have their moments, but imo it’s more about their deeds than them as people that is most interesting.

cornixt:

Shows how much out of touch I am with 40K fluff, I hadn’t realised that the Salamanders now had a weird fluff reason. I used to know someone who played them so I only knew their rules and fluff from about 10 years ago (which was rather odd back then anyway, vastly differing rules compared to the other chapters)

I actually like just that quite a bit. They're from Vulkan after all, not from Harlem. ;)

Thommy H:

So only white people are going to colonise the galaxy? Surely, 38,000 years from now, when humanity has spread across the stars and inhabits every environment imaginable, not only would existing racial phenotypes have flourished and multiplied to varying degrees on varying worlds, but also a whole bunch of new ones would be around as well.

There’s no reason besides creator provincialism that 40K is whitewashed. White people are more common in the UK, North America and Western Europe, but in the world as a whole most people are Asian. So it makes no sense to me that everyone seems to be white, and that it was such a novelty to have some black Space Marines that it had to be turned into a gimmick. Why couldn’t Nocturne have just been settled by colonists from a pan-African state or something? Or maybe the environment just caused dark-skinned people to flourish through natural selection? Or maybe there’s just a typical racial mix and some of the Marines just happen to be black?

It’s a very unpleasant bit of institutional racism, but that kind of fuzzy thinking is typical of an insular company like GW.

Grimstonefire:

Whilst I appreciate your insights into the fluff behind it, can we steer this back on topic and away from institutional racism please

nagged:

not that i play that much but for me it would be raven guard, first founding ,but forgotten still trying to get round to doing my black reach bits into raven guard, still one day

maxcreigs:

It depends how you want to play I guess. I’m not a gamer myself but from what I read on the forums the Chapters are designed to have different strengths and weaknesses but none is better than another.

If you prefer a different color scheme or style you can invent your own Chapter and play it using the rules for one of the main codex ones.

gorgarrak:

for me its got to be the mortifactors, shame i cant paint large areas os bone and get them to look good

starscream:

Soul drinkers have an interesting niche. Hated by the Imperium but still loyal to the Emperor.

Of the first founding I like the Salamanders and its nice to see them get some long overdue attention. I always thought the 1k Sons have a great back story. Looking forward to reading A Thousand Sons.

Disastro:

From what I can remember of my dark and blurry 40k days, I’d have to say White Scars from the loyalist side - hit and run assault bikers are up my alley. Get up the enemy’s nose and cause havoc.

From the traitors, no question - Emperor’s Children. Give me Slaanesh or give me death. Noise marines with sonic blasters make Disastro a happy gamer. Who wouldn’t want to turn one’s enemies’ insides to jelly with noise?

BLOOD AXE:

Emperors Scythes, Lamenters - destroyed Chapters.

Crimson Fists- nearly destroyed Chapter.

Salamanders- all that fire.

Space Wolves- Scouts that pop -up behind the enemy. Cool.

zobo1942:

Relictors, I think.

I still say the legion of the damned …
