[Archive] Movement tray spacing

Ugly Green Trog:

Hi all

As some of you may know from my Infernal Guard thread I’ve just started painting my first Chaos Dwarf models. I am however struggling to get the little sods to rank up nicely, Is it acceptible (ruleswise) to make a movement tray with a small gap in between the models i.e about 2mm? I just don’t want to compromise the look of my unit by forcing them to stand at right angles to each other just so they rank up.

BeeZharr:

I’ve had the same problem with mine. As with all GW systems, the rules are guidelines (they say this), so unless you are playing someone who is highly unreasonable, in a strict tournament, or flagrantly trying to gain an advantage on the battlefield, I can’t see why you can’t.

The better you make it look, the more likely it to be allowed.

Admiral:

It’s no problem. It might be prudent to count 'em as 25 mm bases or go WYSIWYG on the unit’s width (at least for tournaments), but with two attacks and other tough bits this shouldn’t matter. A friend of mine’ll mount them on 25 mm bases to fit them into his WoC army, but I suspect he’d have been forced to use 25 mm anyway given the difficult ranking-up issue.

rabotak:

I don´t think this could be an issue since you´re not actually trying to cramp the models together to get more into contact, rather the opposite, so you´re clearly losing any “advantage” here… no problem, I guess… are people at tournies really this strict?

Ugly Green Trog:

Well I was thinking more about being accused of trying to get less models under a template or something, I don’t really play tourneys but I might like to try one day.

that is a good point, haven´t thought of this.

The other thing to consider though too is that the more area the unit takes up the better chance it has of being hit by template-based attacks in the first place. So somehwere in there is a trade-off in terms of the unit being more likely to be hit vs. maybe 1-4 models not being under the template... if that makes sense.

Hashut’s Blessing:

It’s best to try and keep them together for that reason.

However, the advantages are (that I can think of) one or two less models hit by templates each turn and that your frontage is wider meaning your front arc is also wider.

Disadvantages: more enemies will be in base contact (adding two-four extra models fighting

Pyro Stick:

My plan to rank these up on 20mm bases was to use two types of moulded bases. Half on these:

And half on these (20mm version):

They are slightly different heights so hopefully they will be easier to rank up that way. If that doesnt work (dont know if it will since i havent bought the bases yet) then ill try mounting them all on the second bases since they have more rock on them and therefore more possible positions to stick them in. If neither of these work them im just putting them all on 25mm bases.

Da Crusha:

personally I would just rebase all of them so that they can rank up properly. but Im also a frequent tournament goer.

Even without playing tournaments, I'd still do this myself. It's a real pain in the backside, but it's worth the investment of time and effort.

It may also mean you have to fiddle with where individual models go in the unit so that everyone fits. Numbering the bottom of a model's base (and perhaps the model's position on the movement tray) helps with getting them ranked back up quickly.

vulcanologist:

I number all my bases but I’m a bit anal like that! My Infernal Guard did require a bit of playing around with to make them fit but the biggest pain I had to rank up were my Black Orcs!

Bolg:

Cramming models together and making them still look nice is always a problem.

I would suggest not making the movement tray to big, I say 5-7 mm extra on the whole as a max, if the models dont rank up properly make some scenic bases (along the line of what Pyro Stick suggests, or just drop some sculls on them). that fit in between, those make then rank up nice and smooth and as a bonus, you need less miniatures to get a bigger unit.

Also (and this is what a friend of mine does at tournaments) bring a base as big so that it can take the big round template with the sises of the 20mm bases drawn out (and 25mm on the other side). So if you ever meet an discussion on a tournament, whip out this thing and let math show how many models can be hit maximum. I personally never whent this far but you do sometimes meet idiots on tournaments.

Oh and remember, if your movement tray takes up more space than it should and someone starts complaining your units are more than an inc together he is actually wrong. (My movement tray of my savage orc horde is 6mm to wide and I actually had this discussion, like I said: you do sometimes meet idiots on a tournament.)

trying to rank these infernal guard up is making me want to quit this army.

ranking up didnt turn out to be to much of a problem, i just had to rank and glue them up one at a time, and i had to mark their positions in the regiment.... i guess you learn a lot out of trying to rank up black orcs... (which i did sell off in the end) :)

Thats what im going to do as well. Im sure theres only one way to rank my models up and i dont want to spend ages before a game trying to remember the order so im definately going to number the bottom of the bases so i know exactly where they fit.
