[Archive] My K'daai Destroyer

tvandyke:

Pictures aren’t great.  Usually my wife (a photographer) takes them, but she’s been too busy.  I just used my Ipad.

That’s awesome - It’s basically what I’m trying to do!
How did you do make to larva-rific skin.

Kudos.

Just used a dremel tool with a really small, round grinder type tip. Similar to what you'd use to engrave your name into something.

Grimstonefire:

Consider that idea stolen (the dremel bit).  I’ve been struggling to decide whether to paint on a scale effect (like the red metal here) or carve in some cracks.  Your model has convinced me this will work.

Edit.  Also, incase you were curious, you can make attachments a lot bigger by using these tags instead. Just copy and paste the line and put in the numbers.

Thanks.  I didn’t know that.  Let’s see if it works.

If you want to create something easy, cheap and probably end up really cool, go to Toys R Us and find a toy Bull from a company like Breyer.  Here's an example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Breyer-Stablemates-Toy-Plat-Set-Rodeo-Bull-Cowboy-Figure-Roller-Coaster-5967-/230737257295?pt=UK_Collectables_AnimalCollectables_SM&hash=item35b903234f

I looked at some at Hobbytown USA and they were about the same size as mine (Forgeworld Bale-Taurus).  You could do the same thing I did with the dremel tool to create the lava effect.  The only difference would be that it wouldn't have armor.  In hind sight I probably should have saved my money for the actual destroyer model and went with the above as a temporary fill in until it comes out. If you're good at sculpting you could even sculpt some armor on it.

Love the model

that toy has a lot of potential. thanks for the suggestion I might just do something like that.

Halaster Blackcloak:

one of the best conversions of the destroyer i’ve seen IMO, there are a few others i really like too tho but your’s rates within the Top 3 i like.

Time of Madness:

Really like this destroyer!

Great work!

Insidious:

Wow, simply amazing! Great work and definitely gives me some ideas, I was going to go a whole different route and take that new CSM Dreadnought and do a lava daemon from that with a modified bulls head but this just looks too good…

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the compliments everyone.  In case anyone is interested, the base is from the Thunder Mountain range from Base-X-of-War.

There was a thread a couple of months back where we were talking about where to find a good lava base and someone (I forget who) mentioned these.  The Thunder Mountain range wasn't designed for lava (you'll see how they're painted on the website), but I thought it would look better to only see lava in smaller cracks opposed to some of the other lava bases that really look like a lava flow.  I couldn't see my army marching across a real lava flow. Rocky terrain with lava flowing in between cracks in the rock on the other hand looked possible.  Anyway, for those in that discussion, here's an example of what the Thunder Mountain bases look like with lava.

If you do end up buying something like this and get it online, make sure what size you're getting since they do come in different scales. For instance, I'm not exactly sure what size that one on ebay is. You'd want something about 100 to 150 mm long. Like I said, I found some at Hobbytown, but they weren't the cool looking rodeo bulls like the one above. I'm guessing Toys R Us might have them.

yeah I actually spent a couple of days looking around for different bulls. could only find tame ones. I went to toys r us, target, some generic toy store at the mall, michael's art store and even the zoo. I think my best bet is to buy online. or just probably buy the thundertusk/stonehorn and do a conversion.

Im actually pretty torn on what model I want to use. at first I wanted to use a robot because I always wanted a big deamon robot in my army, but I really like the way the bull looks. I also think Movement 9 is better represented  by a bull. I imagine the robot to be lumbering.

edit*
found a couple of other bulls that could also make a good base.

Both of those look really nice.  I think I like the second one that's getting ready to charge the best. 5.5 inches long. Perfect size and only $7.00.

vulcanologist:

Really nice looking destroyer! Brave to spend so much on the FW Taurus then convert it!

Discoking:

I’ve got a tamed Bull & am using your technique (kind of)…

[apologies for the awful pictures]

I’ve gotten a few messages on where I got the Bull - so here’s where I got it.

This would be interesting too…

Sorry for high jacking your thread, tvandyke!

Very nice. That's the exact same bull I liked from the links DaCrusha sent. I think it's going to come out awesome especially with the flames along the back. I'm kicking myself for not going with one of these other bulls instead of spending so much on the Forgeworld model. At the time I was headstrong on the idea that it needed to have armor, however when I actually started trying to sculpt on flames there were times I wished the armor wasn't there so I could put them on the back like you're doing. Oh well, live and learn. Post some pics when you get it painted.
