[Archive] My Western RPG- Hurled into Eternity

cornixt:

I think that might be over-complicating things, too many exceptions just confuses people. If the aim is for a simple comparison of one number with another, then you risk bogging it down if you introduce too many special rules.

Willmark:

Depends consider this:

Wild Card System- take #3
2-10 numerical value for an attribute (stays as is).
Jack: leave in place; adds 1 to value of the next draw (thereby decreasing chances to hit).
Queen: subtract one from value. Leave card in place and redraw (this improves the chance to hit by lowering the card by one).
King: Kings are wild! (Define what wild is).
Ace: auto success  (stays as is)
Jokers (auto failure) advanced rule option. (Stays as is).

Example in combat you can fire three shots. The gun fighters value is a 7 meaning any draw from the deck of 7 or lower is a hit. Draw one card put it face down in front of you. Repeat for the other two shots. If you draw an ace on= auto hit. A draw of jack: leave the jack where it is and redraw, if its a numeric card compare to the gun fighting skill, but add +1. So in the example if the card drawn was a 7, normally this would be a hit, but the Jack drawn previously pushes it to a 8 meaning a miss.

For Queens it works in reverse.

Kings- still mulling that over.

On any redraw: if its another face card= auto success.
On the redraw: if its a numeric card proceed as normal.
On redraw: if its an Ace auto success.
On redraw: if its a Joker auto failure.

So that’s four possibilities discounting the fact I still need to define what the King does.

Willmark:

Wild Card system take #4
2-10 numerical value for an attribute (stays as is).
Jack: +1 (this is bad as it decreases the chance of success).
Queen: -1 to value for a redraw. This is good as the idea is to get equal to or less then then target value.
King: Kings are wild! A draw of a King means draw two cards and use the best one.
Jokers (auto failure) advanced rule option. (Stays as is).

Exceptions:
Same as before.

That’s basically it. I’m running it through testing it seems to work for almost everything in the game, certainly skill checks and combat. The benefit is now there is really only one system to remember game wide. Combat works well based off of this. Chapter 4 will need to be reworked (potentially) and combat needs to be further clarified, but I’m fairly confident the system will now work.

Next step is make all the changes document wide.

Feeling pumped about this, the game is getting better and more importantly the game, despite being a western is fairly genre neutral under the covers.

Willmark:

Ok the next version of this is up. I think I corrected a lot from the previous version. I have to go through a fine tooth comb to really look for issues. I did find a ton of artifacts from the previous incarnation of the rules which I had not corrected.

Next up is some internal play-testing over the next week or so and a run through the rules. I’m literally drained after working through a lot of the rules, throwing stuff out, clarifying (I hope) and making things consistent (again I hope).

Willmark:

Even after saying it plenty of times prior I think this I’d finally ready for the editing stage. My next goal is to have this read through and make sure spelling is correct and its grammatically correct.

I’m now running through the rules for internal play testing. From the high level view I think I accounted for all of the suggestions I received and its up to testing to determine whether or not they all work.

The best way to find mistakes is to send it off to be professionally printed. Amazing how many you find AFTER you have spent time and money!

Willmark:

Ok ive been a busy little gunslinger and almost have the next revision up and ready to go. I’ve corrected a few things based on feedback of the game so far.

The Wild Card System is shaping up nicely and all skills can now be chosen rather the random determination. Modifiers to hit have been scaled back and compacted.

Lastly there might be some further tinkering but in all it’s shaping up well.

Stay tuned.

Willmark:

As noted here is version 11 of the alpha. I’m feeling pretty good as to where the rules now stand with two excellent rounds of feedback:

Willmark:

Been a busy bee working on the rules particularly the Wild Card System which I’ve changed a bit. I’ve been going through all of the gun-fighting styles in the combat section and noticed some spots where the Wild Card System would fall apart. I think I fixed the obvious problems. So far gun-fighting is looking very deadly with shotguns being perhaps to much.

Dust off thread*

For the last month I’ve been diligently working on simplifying yet again. The results? I’ve paired it down again and eliminated cruft yet again. I’ve revamped the Wild Card System for resolution, redone ranges. movement and measurements. It looks pretty good for the most part. but now its time to put the rubber to the road, testing it… again.

Here is the latest version: http://www.mediafire.com/view/s9ulx8cbbd1ptqo/HCOR1-_Hurled_into_Eternity_13.pdf

The goal is now to have it ready for print by the end of the year and unveiled at a 1st annual Comic Con/RPG fest where i live in the Spring of 2016. If it hits its design points I hope to have it ready for a Kickstarter by late August, proofed and off to be designed by early fall. That leaves me three to six months of flex time for issues.

As always let me know what can be improved. Also download it rather then view it through mediafire.

Willmark:

Link broken? So far it’s been downloaded multiple times so it appears to be working.

As far as the site not yet. The year is going to be even busier then last. End of the year I finish my part time job however.

Looks like the staff is discussing it so I’ll defer to them in this matter.

Willmark:

So… “Back in the Saddle” on this yet again (see what I did there?)

As I noted over here: http://odd74.proboards.com/thread/7757/beta-rules-game-hurled-eternity?page=2&scrollTo=186866 the main problem I’ve run into is while I finished version 2 of the game it was sprawling and a lot of parts just didn’t work.

So what I’m thinking is this: with version 3 Alpha I’m taking a different approach to driving this to completion. What I’m looking to do is release a section at a time and gather feedback make sure it works then go onto the next and so on. From there once the rules are ready combine them, test them as a whole.

Thoughts? Anything I’m missing?

Edit: Another thought I’ve had is whether or not this needs classes to: gunfighter, cowboy, Indian Scout, Snake Oil Salesman, etc…

Admiral:

I’d have liked to read through and come with rules proposals, but even after playing some RPGs I’m just too damn lousy with rules of every kind to help out.

Nevertheless, best of luck ironing out the faulty bits and gathering feedback! Good of you to keep at this. The wild west is a quiet neat setting. :cheers

cornixt:

Splitting it up makes it more digestable for review-sake, so you’ll probably get more bites.

Willmark:

Yep, I concur with your agreement to my statement

So I’ve deleted all of the pdfs from the previous versions and all will be on page one of this thread: http://chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=11801&pid=199946#pid199946

Section 1 (or Should I call them Chapters?) has the intro and standard boiler plate text. The following is included of which I’m looking for feedback:
* Wild Card System; this is the mechanic on which the entire game runs on. I think I finally have it in a usable form.
* Ability scores
* Character creation

Let me know your feedback and what needs to be improved (rules start on page 6). Section 2 has all of the skills and innate talents which will be posted next once Section 1 is complete and so forth.

Thanks in advance.

Willmark:

Alright this thread has run its course. Closing it down as its getting a bit convolutted. I now have all teh aprts of version 3.0 Alpha ready for review and will be in a new thread shortly.
