[Archive] Open Letter to the Site

snowblizz:

Somehow, I feel responsible for the whole pissing match.. my apologies to everyone.. I'll return to my corner to sulk some more..

two_heads_talking
Ooooh, good idea!

I blame THT as well! :~

J'accuse!

Willmark:

So unless I missed something I see no reason why SlaveBay should go towards post count. No one has raised any objects as to why it should.

wallacer:

I see no reason either. Nobody seems to have voiced any concerns about it.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Shhh…don’t make it a big deal! Let it die a silent death! LOL!

Kera foehunter:

i second what Tarrakk said. it no big deal let it die

Hobgoblyn:

I’d like to raise a point…

Why does post count even matter? I mean, it strikes me that regardless of the forum not every post every user makes is particularly meaningful, necessary or productive to the overall growth of the discussion on these boards. So certain sections you won’t count and people spamming other sections with 1 sentence posts that could be summed up in 2 words is… somehow meaningful enough to be counted?

Post count means virtually nothing. So you throw this title or that title up onto various people for having a lot of posts and ultimately for what?..

I think that those who make meaningful contributions to the conversations on these boards will begin to stick in the heads of the users and those who simply pop up to say “I agree” “fantastic” “I like Chaos Dwarfs” with nothing more to say or contribute beyond such contrite simplicities will more or less fade from people’s minds regardless of whether their title says “Super Ultra Elite Monarch of the Immortal Chaos Dwarf High Council of Sorcerers, Master of All Chaos Dwarfs”.

Seriously, who is sweating bullets over this one? To whom does it matter and why? How shallow is the person it matters to?

Hell, why not just outmod the whole post-count system and have the mods reward people with whatever random-ass title they feel the person should be have. It wouldn’t make one bit of difference to me if I were stuck at the ‘Slave’ title permanently even though I’ve been a (sporradically active) member of this site basically from the week it opened (not even sure what my title is, guess I’ll check after I post this. :P)

Willmark:

Without rehashing too much the issue of post count wasn’t even the real issue if you can believe that more of a side track…

Always good to hear from a veteran of the site especially one that predates my joining the site by 6 and a half months!

Hashut’s Blessing:

My apologies for being off the website for several weeks. I agree with what Willmakr has said, even though he typoed can’t as can a few times, accidentally.

As Willmark said, we wanted to clear the air a little.

zorn sabretooth:

I don’t think we  have that many spammers anyway… :~

We just call that Irony...

Hashut’s Blessing:

Oh buggery. It’s quoted so I can’t even edit and deny it lol  (Checked it this time :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: )

WoodenPickles:

Transparrency of Staff?

Im an old member with a new name and the staff have always been really active, helpful, and have always listened to concerns and addressed them in a timely fasion. Like when we asked for T shirts or a magazine, we got one and fast.

wallacer:

sorry to go off topic, but just out of interest why the new name? Was your old account not working or something?

Willmark:

Yep if need be follow up with Wallacer.

Kera foehunter:

wow i havent see this many staff member post to one topic!!

good job guys

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Well, I guess they have to talk somewhere! LOL!

Maul:

I have always bee impressed with the staff of this site and the commitment of CDO members. That being said, I think these issues have been carpet bombed into the ground. Like the target of a battery of earthshakers… (gets lost in mental image).

wallacer:

Maul
You have a point.  However, I think the thread is being left unlocked so nobody feels censored and we get as much constructive criticism as we can.
Well, I guess they have to talk somewhere! LOL!

Tarrakk Blackhand
If the staff need somewhere to talk we can always go to our secret obsidian fortress on top of Mount Doom.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

ThanX Kera!

Hobgoblyn
to answer your question and finally weigh in on this subject. It matters to me. So call me shallow.

I've sat back before contributing in an effort to calm down and look at this rationally (hahaha, doesn't usually happen though, ask Xander).

I took it personally. I'm no follower of CDs, or WH for that matter. I just contribute here to support friends and loved ones. Does that mean I refuse to learn? no. I learn by posting, providing comment, asking questions. I learn about the MEMBERS of this site by trying to always welcome the new members, give them a hand or direct them to where they need.  My post count isn't about these fantastical one liner spam posts. I post in an attempt, even if it is small, to bring the community together as a whole.  When I reached 500 posts within 1 year of coming to the site, I was ecstatic... ask Xander, Willmark or HB. Even Swiss and I had discussed this as my goal. I didn't try to boost my count by throwing random responses around. I still tried to contribute in a positive manner, commenting on sculpting efforts, painting, etc.  this is not to say every single one of my comments is somehow CD related, I don't think anyone can say that. But part of being a community and family is being able to communicate and have light hearted banter back and forth and genuinely enjoying the discussion with one another.

So if you want to know who post count matters to, I would say everyone in one way or another. It means you are being recognized for your efforts. No one wants to be overlooked for what they feel is a contribution.  And when Grimmy went ahead and tried to remove the post count in the only areas I felt I could contribute, I felt crushed. I honestly wondered if I should come back to the site... because it was like saying my opinions and comments aren't valid here, though I know that wasn't the true intention.

For those who think CDO is moving AWAY from CDs in general? What ever gave you that idea? We release a GIGANTIC webzine every quarter. We have painting and idea generating competitions too.  We constantly post pics of CDs, Pirate CDs (for my favourite CDO sister), post tutorials, help other people with their converting and armies. have mini challenges among members.  This site, despite being 2 years old (terrible two's anyone?) is still experiencing growing pains. We have the benefit of a dedicated staff who has been around since the beginning... It's not some new set of admins trying to make over the site to something it was never intended.  This site is CDO, Chaos Dwarfs Online. We are Chaos Dwarfs. But everyone runs more than 1 army, and there is a reason. personal interest and likes. They like other armies, but if they supplement CDs isn't that the point? They are about promoting the hobby, which is important. If CDs influence their armies, who cares if they're talking about pirates or dark elves or what have you.  The importance here is to create a strong, and positive CD community and we've done that.  Any site that isolates and restricts discussion of other topics will die a quick, but painful death.  CDO is instead flourishing. and that's due to the diverse member base here. And I don't think that should be changed or quelled or limited.

Last point I'll talk to is this misconception of a lack of transparency with the admin... it just seems... I don't... wow. I mean. Our admins constantly post polls and Q&A threads about how the site is going, what to change, what works, what doesn't. Aside from this most recent incident, I would say that, well, you always know what an admin is planning (except maybe Willmark for WOH... and that's for good reason! anticipation, just like the contests)  Our admins are hard working and diligent. If people keep making accusatory statements, our staff do not need to do all that they do.  They do it for the community, and I would not take the criticism nearly as well as they have.

The last thing we want is CDO devolving to something it's not or never intended to be.  CDO is a growing, wonderful community and we should appreciate everything that the staff has put into this place.  Xander worked so hard at the beginning to create this site.  Others have attested to how small the community was at the beginning. Willmark, Grim, Cornixt, Wallacer, etc etc, work tirelessly around here.  People I know have expressed concern about Xander's lack of attendance on the site, but I know if he's not ON the site, he's doing something behind the scenes.  I do admit this may have been blown out of proportion, but I think the staff dealt with it expediently and have things back on track to work and flow properly again and allow CDO to continue its growth.

Love,

Sojourn
