[Archive] Photobucket Migration to the Darklands - Stage I

Nicodemus:

Willmark is correct. For a few buckets I’ve had to try half a dozen times at least. I suggest you keep trying!

Admiral:

Same here. I’m almost finished with my albums… All my subalbums didn’t really take much time to download as such, but the waiting time for the command to work is stretching into days and days, while mapping CDO members. Perseverance is the only thing to overcome these PB troubles.

Willmark:

Perseverance is the only thing to overcome these PB troubles.

Part of me wonders if that's part of what PB is counting on: that people wont go to that much of an effort and just pay up or give up at least.

Admiral:

Possibly. Overread on DakkaDakka has presented this hypothesis, which accounts for the silly sum of money wanted by Photobucket. I’m leaning toward the same conclusion and suspect PB won’t even be around next year. All the more reason to salvage now, or never:

Even if they do, I can’t see how they can recover from a PR nightmare this bad.

Which is why I think this is intentional. Instead of just closing shop and getting hit with people suing them or forcing their hand to remain open (ala how MS had their hand forced when they wanted to end support for Win XP); they are instead simply making the service unaffordable to maintain for the average person. The average person is not going to pay hundreds for image hosting and they know this, even those who hardly know how to use the internet are not going to just pay up that sum of money. So everyone hates on them; everyone rages; everyone leaves. In a few months time Pbucket closes its doors and no one fights to have them remain around because anyone who is still current and active has moved on at that point.

Abecedar:

Sorry I haven’t been much help with all this. I think I’ve gotten my zip files downloaded now but its been frustrating

JMR:

Hey all. I’ve been away from this site (and the hobby!) for a long time. I’m trying to backup my pictures, but the download album option isn’t working. It doesn’t do anything when I hit “download”. Sometimes it says “Hmm, something didn’t click, try again.” or somesuch. Any suggestions?

Are the steps in the first post of this thread still the way to go or should I follow a different guide?

Admiral:

It frequently does err. Since I had many subalbums to download, it was a drawn-out process of trying again day after day on Photobucket. Sometime it would work at random.

An arduous way around this could be trawling through one’s log and potential other image-holding threads, and applying this stopgap solution to image after image. But beware that it is not compatible with Nicodemus’ slick migration!

At the very least it will let you view your unviewable pictures (I had some), and salvage manually by copy-paste from there.

JMR:

Well, after trying to download my album for the last few days, the “Download Album” button is now completely gone :~

Admiral:

It is indeed gone. Can’t see it either. Kneejerk guess: Error or Photobucket is starting to pack down for good.
