TheHoodedMan:

Hey folks.

In my shopping/army list I planned for a sorcerer-prophet on foot, 1 daemonsmith and a castellan bsb.

As well I wanted to field a unit of infernal guard (25-30) and a unit of hobgoblin archers.

The bsb should come with the ig. But what to do with the two casters? I am a little shy about the risk to place the general into the front rank of my lone close combat infantry.

Does it make sense to put the lvl1 daemonsmith near a war machine?

How are your experiences with that issue and how did you solve it?

Abecedar:

The lone daemonsmith’s main use is for his re-roll ability, so keeping him near a war machine is good thing. Without giving your prophet some added mobilty he should be in the unit for safety purposes

TheHoodedMan:

The daemonsmith has “look out, sir”. That means the war machine is hit instead if he succeeds with his roll? But bs based shooting can still attack him normally? Just to get sure.

I saw some people use a 2nd smaller sized infernal guard unit, sometimes with fireglaives. Should this be better to keep the general away from the first line of combat?

Geist:

Look out sir works any and all ranged attacks, be it spells or otherwise. Mind you its a 2+(around warmachines) vs the normal 4+ against rank and file. Also make sure you look at the wording of the spell that hits you. Some spells wont let you take a look out sir.

ThorAxe:

The general is usually fine with the close combat IG unit. If things are looking really bad or the unit, he could always jump out before the unit reaches combat, leaving him free to do whatever needs be done.
