I sometimes get miniatures from Black Scorpion and just thought I’d mention their latest newsletter I received:
Sic:
" we are switching our production to resin. In the past resin costs made it prohibitively expensive but technology advances have brought the costs down. The switch to resin will therefore result in no price increases in fact many many of our packs will be reduced in price."
Yes, resin is actually a cheaper medium. But, as with many things, GW price their products based on what people will pay, not on how much they cost to make. That’s why they called their resin range “Finecast” - it makes it sound like a superior product so they can sell it for more.

Hmm...Games Workshop...?!?
I`m pretty sure Black Scorpion aren`t a global company with stores and rent and advertising and wages and all manner of other costs - you can`t expect the same attitude from GW. And yeah, the Finecast price rises were cheeky, but they did invent a new kind of resin - if it was better quality, the reaction wouldn`t have been so bad.
GW’s global costs, wages, rents etc were met by their existing pricing structure surely? Reduced production costs for resin therefor would just mean a bigger profit margin. To actually increase prices while lowering costs surely just smacks of greed?
Plue another 20 pounds if you live in Australia. Seriously you European and North American people have no idea what ‘rip off by GW’ is. Just jump on their Australia website and check out how ludicrous their prices down under are!
Price increase at GW could be because of research into the field - they are one of the leaders (if not the market leader) in the development of the technology in plastic/resin casting etc. Also, they probably wanted to recoup the costs far quicker and have more machines to get rid of (the metal ones). They also researched a new blend for resin (according to their statements) and this in turn allows them to do new stuff with the models. On top of all of that, people still pay the money.
Not defending them, just offering some possibilities (that can all be thrown to one side with various arguments as well, lol).
I just looked at the price on the Australia site, and wow. That's CRAZY.

Always been like this. Canada gets hit hard as well. Our retailers over here have started using USA pricing plus a bit of a discount to get people to stop buying online. It has worked at my local store, a lot more people are buying stuff from the store rather then online.

What part of Canada do you live in? Obviously you are not from Southern Ontario as there is practically a games store in every city. I have about 10 I could go to within an hour drive of me.

Yay, I love this quote!
Sometimes even free market works :)
Note: this is not meant to be a political rant, just a compliment to Time of Madness :hat off
I live in the interior of BC. There are two game store in a nearby city, about an hour's drive away.
The economy is killing miniature gaming around here - at least according to the owner of the comic/game store in town.
Then again, I live in a town where 482 people lined up on the street for a chance at 35 part-time minimum wage positions.

Sounds very similar to how I used to do it, then my local pawnshop (who also has a large boardgame section) started carrying GW stuff. Combined with his... sizable discount, I've stoped going the 1.5hrs to the nearest retailer.
Just roaming the GW site - interesting to see that a pack of two metal Sabretusks is £15.50 - A pack of two in Finecast is £10. Quite a hefty price cut with the material change.
I thought the Finecast price must have been for one, but it definitely says a pack of 2.

A small selection of items became cheaper as Finecast, mainly Monstrous Infantry which went form packs of 1 to packs of 3 with a slight price increase on the 1 in metal. Since they don't sell these at a loss that would tell us there is some profit margin in the Finecast that changed from metal and became more expensive.

Are you in the Fraser Valley Region?
Ogre_Mage
Nope, I"m in the Okanagan.
However, I am really interested in the store you mentioned, as I get down to the coast fairly frequently. What is it called?
