[Archive] Robin hood vs King Arthur

Kera foehunter:

Who do you like better and why

Hashut’s Blessing:

King Arthur because he actually did cool stuff and became King. Robin Hood got captured in a crusade, came back, nicked some gold, dispersed a LITTLE of it. Most of both legends are incorrect

Perv:

Has to be Arthur, cant take men in tights seriously

Kera foehunter:

i say robin hood,He like a wood elf with merry men steal the money from the rich man yea baby

torn:

i used to love the disney robin hood film when i was a kid, and in fact loved the kevin costner 1 when it came out, and still love the them song (great kareoke song) and men in tights is fantastic!

i actually think i had robin hood in lego

and i did have a set of 1/72 plastic robin hood and his merry men

erm, yeah so robin hood’ed out here

athurian stuff has got too serious and roman for me lately, i prefer it to be like the last knight or whatever it was called.

Kera foehunter:

well my faverite disney old school is peter pan . the pirates and wild boys where the best.

Robinhood men in tights was so funny i laught my a-- off

Excalaber was the best arthur movie!!

Willmark:

Arthur. At least the historical Dark Ages Arthur that is. While a great movie and coming closer to the real Arthur then ever before in film; the movie Arthur was just that, a movie.

Perv:

I realy liked the Arthur film with Ray Winstone and Keira Knightley in it, least it was believeable.

Theres a Robin Hood Dwarf, maybe he can be converted to look more Chaosy and you can call him Robbing Hood. Steals from the rich and steals from the poor

Perv

Perv:

Perv
you've found a movie with keira knightly believable?
i don't believe you...

Perv:

lol what you got against my princess? She’ll be made a Dame for her contributions to film…ok maybe not…

Willmark:

Kiera Knightly=hot

kiera Knightly fighting in a cloth halter top in winter= hot, but not believable.

Best Arthur movie is still Excalibur. Has little to do with the historical Arthur as it has to do with the Medieval romances. But in its own right still good. The soundtrack ain’t bad either, just hard to find.

There have also been some horrendous screen potrayals as well though. The utter crap of the movie First Knight still causes a sink around anything Arthur like 5 week old fish.

There have been some good representations of Robin Hood on screen, some very bad.

torn:

i like first knight!!!

well i did when i was a kid anyways. its a bit more fantastical than keira knightleys version.

the new movie out last legion is slightly athurian, well merlin is in it, and arthurs dad if i can remember rightly. its not up to much really though

metro_gnome:

well i like pirates of the carribean…
cause even tho keira knightly and orlando bloom are in it… bad things just keep happening to them…
i just love watching bad things happen to them…
but while i’d like the believe they were actually happening… I find it hard to believe they are…

< that was more than less than unhelpful… and my 600th post…

Perv:

“kiera Knightly fighting in a cloth halter top in winter= hot, but not believable.” You’ve obviously never been to a Newcastle match during January…Geordies can be bare chested all thru the game and their nipples dont even get hard !!! Some of us are made from the hard stuff and we’ve even got muscles in our spit !!!

I am a poofy southerner however and moving to Caribbean for some heat

Willmark:

I remember watching First Knight and thinking “a movie hasn’t sucked this bad since ewoks whipped out troops that not only conquered a galaxy, far far away; but also eliminated the Jedi”.

Rotten tomatoes would not do justice to that abomination of a movie.

Willmark
i just watched empire strikes back last night, and if you think the ewoks are bad (i mean the stormtroopers should have just flamethrowered them) yoda when luke first meets him is just unbeleieably stupid.

its more like watching sesame street!

Willmark:

True, but CGI really didnt come to the fore until 2 years later with Tron and 1985’s The Last Starfighter. For the timeframe Star Wars special effects hold up well particularly Jedi. Still doesnt detract from the overall weakness of the sorry IMHO.

Back on topic. Robin Hood is interesting to a point but the hack and slash of Arthur has a greater appeal IMHO.

Khan!:

I’ve never seen “Excalibur,” so the “Camelot” version with Richard Harris remains my favourite King Arthur film adaptation. They definitely don’t make movies like they used to!

The best Arthurian book adaptation I have read is far and away “Firelord” by Parke Godwin. I think it’s out of print now, unfortunately. But nothing beats Welsh post-roman warrior-poets! And Picts.

Parke Godwin also wrote a very good adaptation of the Robin Hood story, called “Sherwood.” I remember this one being particularly good because it has William the Conqueror in it (seriously, that’s pretty awesome), and the Sheriff of Nottingham is a) not really a villain per se and b) a terrific badass.

The best Robin Hood film adaptation is “The Adventures of Robin Hood” from the 30s I think, starring Errol Flynn and Olivia deHavilland (sp?). Errol Flynn was also a terrific badass. Additionally, I have some affection for the Disney animated version.

I think the Arthurian legends have a wee bit more appeal for me, mostly because “Firelord” really struck a chord with me when I was younger. But I have appeared in community theatre adaptations of both Robin Hood and King Arthur myths, so both are good by me. Although, in “Robyn Hood” (spelled with a ‘y’ because it is in fact Maid Marian who is the famous outlaw in this version) I only got to stagefight with quarterstaves, while in “Arthur” we played with swords…hm…
