[Archive] Spears for Hobbos?

Willmark:

Tell me you thoughts on the matter?

Willmark:

In other words should they have them? Realizing of course they currently do not.

cornixt:

Nope, not on infantrySpears aren’t very good for most units since they can’t be used when charging, except on cavalry like wolfriders.

Border Reiver:

I don’t see why not.

Feral Hobgoblins have them (Oglah Khan’s wolfboyz), and every culture seems to have figured out the technology behind a long pointed stick…also, if you look at Hobgoblins as slave troops (I don’t, but that’s another thread) then it would make sense that their masters would equip them on the cheap, and there is no cheaper weapon to equip an army with than spears.

This is EXACTLY my thinking, spears are cheap, diposable weapons, hobgoblins are cheap, disposable troops.

Gilzam:

I use spear armed goblins in my CD army (I know, points sink but someone

has to take some smaller slaves)

I do this for two reasons, the first they are disposable anyhow and i care not for their loss (they are after all cheap to other armies hobbos are cheaper but o well) and for the points for spears it doesnt effect the loss much.

The second being, that if they do survive, they can actually have a chance to hit back and if they kill a model, wooh hoo, im in front, this also gives me an excuse to do a victory dance in a circle, its a morale victory you see. So I dont see why a “lesser” goblin slave can have one and a much more looked after “important” slave cannot have one, kinda dont make no sence :~

torn:

i said yes, but only because any weapons options are more useful in any other situations.

if using the hobbos for defensive purposes where you need them to gain more kills than to survive themselves spears would be very useful.

would i equip cd warriors with spears also? probably, considering im not likely to get the charge.

imagine how cool it would be if you could equip hobbo’s with blunderbusses . . .

minty:

well, we can be sure CD’s on’t get spears, but hobgobs used to have options of spears and two handed weapons(great weapons) back in 1st ed ( i Know they weren’t in our army then but it was still cool) so i say yes to hobbo, no to dwarf

wizzbang:

This might be another discussion but I think Hobgoblins aren’t allowed to take spears (according to the Ravening Hordes).

If they could I would say yes, with WS3 its worth its points since some people even consider equipping common Goblins with spears (WS2). This is unless you will be using your Hobo’s as meatshields of course.

Correct as noted, this is a should they have them type of thread...

Uzkul Werit:

I would say they were only really useful on Wolfboyz as they’d get the Strength bonus when charging. But in the current list, that’d mean that the normal Hobgoblins would get them too. Pretty useless when you consider their two main uses - either a cheap bait unit (spears would just result in a useless points rise for the bait) or 'Ard Hobgoblins. Using a spear there would just detract from their armour save.

Hobgoblyn:

They are a basic infantry unit.

Every other comparible races basic infantry unit should have spears.
Therefore, there should be the option of giving them spears.
It doesnt necessarily mean that you should always equip your guys with spears…

But, they should have the option. Just like goblins, just like orcs, just like humans.

Couldn't agree more. :hat off

Border Reiver:

I concur that hobgoblins shouldn’t be equipped with spears as standard kit, but it should be an available option, just like it is for the less trustworthy slaves…

That is one of the things that has bothered me since 5th edition: the trend of removing opitions from armies in terms of weaponry. I understand that GW wanted to make things consistent for armies. What they did was make every army that takes the field the same asthe next. Take high elves, I’ve played them for 15 years they have gone from tons of options to next to nil.

Makes me long for 3rd edition.
