[Archive] Specialist games might be returning

Allegedly a new studio is being set up which will be rereleasing the Specialist Games ranges with new and old minis alike including (but not limited to) Bloodbowl, Epic and BFG. It’ll also be handling the LotR/Hobbit range.

I’m skeptical, but it would be nice if its true…assuming that the prices aren’t astronomical or the releases aren’t limited to box sets.

Rakkzul:

I think they will just release some box sets and that’s all, considering they said they are a miniatures company, not a gaming one

Plus, they already saw the benefits of Dreadball, XWing and similar games, so they’re hoping to get some benefits from it, I guess

Admiral:

Neat, though it somehow sounds implausible given GW’s stance to the minor games/ranges and their meagre performance. It would mean that Lotr, Bloodbowl, BFG etc lives on. Fully fledged ranges are always preferable, but box sets like Dreadfleet and Space Hulk are better than nothing.

Most importantly, a new specialist games studio would be a good way to develop and protect their IP, which is elaborate, massive and outright impressive in some of the peripheral areas. Not driving on with Blood Bowl and Battlefleet Gothic would be a shame, especially since those brilliant games are making it into video game format.

As for prices, that might be what will put off many potential buyers, akin to what happened with the Hobbit releases. Still, if new models look very good, perhaps some of the less ridiculous prices could be swallowed by some customers.

Dînadan:

Maybe Warhammer Fantasy will get classed as a Specialist Game if we’re lucky lol.

Admiral:

Haha, what a twist that would be for GW’s original main system.

It’s even conceivable that both WHFB and AoS could end up as Specialist Games in the longer run, with 40k and Horus Heresy conquering the big scene altogether. Hopefully not.

If the new studio is to only release box kits rather than full ranges (which by the way can be wonderful and rich in new things - just look at Dreadfleet), can we expect Mantic and similar firms to step in to expand upon some of the re-released Specialist Games? They could release rules systems of their own in the same genre, and new models for factions not covered by GW. This is already the case with Blood Bowl obviously.

Shameless or not, this could herald good things for hobbyists interested in the peripheral stuff given how predatory Mantic in particular can be.

Hahahahaha! :cheers :hat off

Hill_Billy_Bub:

I really hope that they do this to Mordheim. I played the PC game but there is something special when you do it with models.

Skink:

I’m very skeptic… We’ll see.

Doombeard:

there’s now an official post on the mobile app it seems supporting this

Hunter:

If they rerelease Warhammer Quest I might soil myself.

New versions of Blood Bowl and Necromunda will definitely be relevant to my interests.

Thommy H:

I wouldn’t hold your breath for anything set in the Warhammer world (except Blood Bowl, which is its own weird beast) since they blew it up last year. Not much point killing your IP so spectacularly only to resurrect it less than 12 months later…

Bloodbeard:

Perhaps GW is getting to the realization that boardgames are super popular in these years and that boardgame kickstarters bring in large amounts of money.

There’s a thing about games played on a small scale, that fit in a box and doesn’t need that many models.

Both Deadzone kickstarters have done extremely well - with a good price that could have been Necromunda.

Dreadball, Dreadball extreme er doing extremely well, and lots of companies are making money on good looking BB miniatures - bloodbowl is doing well.

There was a well funded Dungeon Saga, Heroquest 25th (might not get real, but brought in over 1mio euro in pledges) and now Sword and Scorcery as well. Could have been an official Heroquest or Warhammer Quest.

There’s Devils Run: Route 666 - could have been Gorka Morka.

Dropfleet Commander is going nuts - that’s Andy Chambers new BFG.

Frostgrave (and it’s expansion) have done well in their crowdfunding, Malifaux is popular too - could’ve have been Mordheim.

GWs I.P.s are so strong, that making well priced contained boardgames (with room for expansions in size and miniatures) should be a no brainer. .

I would chose my beloved settings any day, if the value was right and the campaign mechanisms was balanced.

GW has done some boardgames recent years. Dreadfleet, space hulk, the inquisitor one and now the 30k one. But they didn’t have much replay value and didn’t contain that many miniatures compared to prize (space hulk being an exception).

New versions of Blood Bow.

Hunter
I think BB is complete with LRB6 - I see no real things to update in that game.

Skink:

I’d really love to collect Warmaster armies… But I highly doubt that the range will be resurrected, or the game be redone. For the very same reasons that Thommy exposed above.

cornixt:

The 40k assassin boxed game was crap. The rules were too simple for experienced gamers. The models were too complicated for newbies. The campaign was too short for everyone. It was like they set out to make something that failed on at least one aspect for anyone in the market for a self-contained boardgame.

At least with new games coming out they won’t have to change their name to Game Workshop, with the game being 40k.

Skink
They could always rebrand it to Age of Sigmarmaster ;P

Thommy H:

Of all their systems, Warmaster is probably the most ‘setting agnostic’, since it’s already been ported over to Middle Earth (Battle of Five Armies game from 2004ish I think) and historics (Warmaster Ancient Battles) but it’s a game that’s very rooted in pre-modern warfare, more so even than Warhammer was, so I can’t see it working well in the Mortal Realms setting.

Bolg:

But, but… “the internet” has good rules for most of these specialized games already right. It would be annoying if GW started putting out new Necromunda rules for me, the community rules are great and I dont want to switch again.

You don't unless you only play at GW; at home/at club you and your mates can use whichever rule set you prefer.

Admiral:

Also, Stormcast Eternal Warmaster miniatures would be pretty sweet. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if Mordheim continued under the old IP. It’s a well-known formula, and I can see no contradiction in running AoS as the main thing yet continuing in parallell with the old Warhammer setting in some minor ways if it helps bring in money. Warhammer can be played in different ages of time, simultaneously.

I know, I was just hoping to get the minis back on sale! Lizardmen are nigh impossible to find online :(
