[Archive] Taurus painted as stone?

Grimstonefire:

What are your thoughts on this?

I’ve been thinking that aside from being a big flying monster… if I just paint it red skin it’s not going to stand out much and drazhoath probably is the centrepiece of my army.

So I’m thinking of painting it as stone, something like this.

Fluffwise I reckon it’s just about ok? A stone flying creature… just say it’s magic.

TheHoodedMan:

Entirely possible. Like the look of the “skin”.

Bloodbeard:

That’s gonna look really neat! What colours are going on the wings then?

Admiral:

Works perfectly fine and ties into that seam of CD background on petrification, just like golems and guardian statues would do. Go for it!

Zanko:

Sounds very cool - maybe I will steal this idea … :~

Grimstonefire:

The wings I was thinking I might paint more as ‘magical skin’, a dark red or something to match the spell drazhoath is casting.  Make it a bit more obvious fluffwise why it can fly.

That’s the plan anyway, it may look rubbish.  Suppose it might make more sense to sculpt flames off them?

Grimstonefire:

Well, I was mulling over one of two options for this:

The first would be to paint it as actual marble, dabbing a few different reds over it and stippling on silver here and there before painting veins/ cracks.  The downside would be achieving contrast here to the rest of the army and considering the contours of the body.  On the plus side, it would be very textured and should be easier to tell what I’m trying to achieve.

The second option was more of a minimalist stylised marbling effect, done like the painting above, pretty much a simple higlight over raised areas then extreme edge highlighting.  So very quick

Then, one stormy night, in the land of dreams Hashut sent me a vision that’s decided the the way forwards.  I’m going to be painting the entirety of the model as ‘black crystal’.  Probably the most complicated and time consuming painting I’ve ever done in my life.  I’ve made a good start already, essentially breaking down the skin into hundreds of tiny facets every time it curves a fraction.  Effectively turning the 3D contours into 2D diamonds (etc).  I’ve also done the blending a bit in places.  It’s damn hard and very time consuming, but I’m very impressed with the effect so far.  What I plan to do once I’ve finished the skin is to paint the odd facet here and there to be reflecting a green or purple, to make it look more magical.

The effect I’ve achieved would make amazing armour for a character, which I’m definitely going to do so they stand out.

Edit. A picture to give more of an idea of the effect.  Like this but blended down to black on most facets.
