[Archive] The Blackshard Brotherhood

Heavygear:

My work in progress army is finally assembled and waiting to be painted. I hope to play this army at Buckeye Battles this year.

I will be updating periodically as I get things painted.

In the far north at the Zharr stronghold of Uzkulak there exists a cabal of mercenary warriors known as the  Blackshard Brotherhood. These vicious sell swords have sworn fealty to the Sorcerer Prophet Zhorahm Stonebeard. Zhorahm the Conjurer is widely known amongst the Dawi Zharr, Ogre and Human tribes of the north for his gift for binding Daemon spawn into the mechanical creations of his Daemonsmiths.

Zhorahm the Conjurer Forge Master of the Seventh Tower of Zhorn Uzkul and Sorcerer Patron of the Blackshard Brotherhood

When matters require his personal attention Zhorahm takes to the field aback a massive Bale Taurus he calls Taal Lam - Fire Storm.

Zhorahm maintains a bodyguard he refers to as his Acolytes. Adorned with ornamental armor and armed with fire glaives the Acolytes are charged with protecting the Sorcerer Prophets life. They are bound to him through dark magic. If he dies they die.

When not in direct service to Zhorahm, the Brotherhood enjoys a degree of autonomy not often shared by the private forces of the city’s other Sorcerer Prophets. In fact elements of the Brotherhood can often be found supplementing the armies of other Towers, with their patrons blessing of course. This gives the Brotherhood a dangerous familiarity with the deployment and tactics of any possible rivals and supplements the price of maintaining a well trained and well equipped military force.

The Blackshard Brotherhood is administered by a council of five senior members but ultimate authority and battlefield command rests with the First Castellan.

First Castellan Sargon Blackhelm, Commander of the Blackshard Brotherhood is an powerful, imposing figure. Veteran of hundreds battles the First Castellan maintains his position through a combination of iron discipline and ruthless action. The daemonic visage of the Blackshard Helmet from which he takes his name is enough to cause weaker willed foes to scatter like ashes. Those foolish enough to test there mettle against him are crushed like steel on the anvil by “Dark Star” the wicked mace he wields in battle.

“Our contract is simple. Zhorahm supplies the gold. We supply the Guys, Guns, Goblins and the Guts.” Sargon.

Though greatly feared he is also widely respected by the murderous band he leads. Under Sargon’s command the Brotherhood has flourished. It was Sargon who gained the patronage of Zhorahm the Conjurer. Bolstered by the daemonic creations forged in the Conjurers furnaces and the wealth from his coffers the Blackshard Brotherhood has expanded their operations throughout the North.

In addition to plying their bloody trade on the battlefield the Brotherhood maintains a small naval fleet. Used for troop transport, smuggling and the more bloody practices of slavery and piracy. The sight of the black, dragon mast ironclads of the Blackshard are a dark omen indeed.

Blackshard Marines of the ironclads Iron Hydra and Sea Drake armed with the  infamous hail shot blunderbuss for boarding action.

Command of the Naval Fleet has fallen to the Brotherhoods Daemonsmith Alchemist Namar-Sin. A lowborn wilder, Namar found he was blessed by Hashut with sorcerous talent for manipulating metal at an early age. He sought his fortune in the only place one in his circumstances could, amongst the shadows and dark corners of Uzkulak.

He began his rise to power within the Blackshard after assassinating the former First Castellan, placing Sargon as Second Castellan in command. Out of gratitude or more likely the desire to remove him as a rival, Sargon granted him command of the Naval Fleet. Namar’s duties often require extended voyages at sea conducting slave raids to sate the unending demand for fodder that the Blackshard’s military operations require. Just as Sargon likes it.

Wearing the traditional iron mask of his order. Namar-Sin is a shadowy, menacing figure made all the more terrifying by his large muscular frame. Tall and physically powerful for one of his kin.  It is uncommon for a low born Dawi Zhar to rise to any station much  higher than slave. That Namar-Sin has achieved his current status amongst killers as proficient as the Blackshard Brotherhood is a testament to his ruthlessness and cunning.

The “Brass Bull”, Zhorahm’s masterpiece is a weapon of last resort. The monstrous construct cannot be controlled, attacking anything in it’s path. It is virtually indestructible.

Abecedar:

Welcome outlying brothers.  I too have just began adding and embarking some sea-borne assets to my clan. I of course will stay ashore as I get sea-sick real easy. (in my previous life in the aussie navy, on my first day at sea I threw up and also on my very last night at sea as well)

Bloodbeard:

Very nice fluff you’ve written for your army - very nice indeed. It’s adds a new level of “detail” to the miniatures.

Is it my notebook or are the pictures really small? Can hardly see the details on the characters and some of the units. Real shame - would like to do that.

The pictures are small yes. And that's a shame, cause the Bale Taurus looks really good from what I can see;). Have you tried using Photobucket or something similar to upload your pics?

Yes ofc, but with Photobucket or similar, you get larger photos right in your post. Makes it easier to follow the blog, and I think you get more viewers ;). Just a tip mate;)

There I fixed that for you.

Admiral:

Nice army, it has a lot of potential. That fiend was made for Chaos Dwarfs, it was!

There you go, much better imo;)

Your painted models looks awesome, and I am LF to seeing more!

Xx9millxX:

Awesome start of a blog … Excited to see more

What models are your “Blackshard marines”? the blunderbuss guys?

And what kind of head/helmet is on your “Sargon blackhelm” ? I like that

They’re interesting models and even more interesting story … Good job

Heavygear:

Most of the marines are avatars of war thunder warriors. They have scale mail and the beards are sufficiently bushy that with  pale skin and black beards I think they will pass as chaos dwarves. I have some marauder shields I may put on them as well.

I used the decorative heads from the chaos vehicle sprue. I glued them on the end of their blunderbusses. The gargoyle heads just make them look more evil and give the illusion of a bigger bell shape at the end of the barrel.

There is a Titan Miniatures character in there and a first addition chaos dwarf swivel gun and a mortar with two crewmen each.

Sargon’s helmet is from the Chaos Possessed Marines kit. I won’t take credit for that idea. I saw a similar conversion here and stole it. I also stole the idea for my BSB from this photo. I will post pics when he is painted.

I like what you’ve painted so far.

I look forward to seeing more.

Cheers

There will be ships. They are part of my army display board.

Grimbold Blackhammer:

I thought I asked this but maybe I didn’t… How’d you make the smoke? It looks quite good!!

Sticklander:

Great to see some more Rozmax units being used! I’d be very interested to see them painted.

Really like the look of your FW Hero on Grand Taurus!

Fuggit Khan:

Sticklander
I agree! I'm looking forward to seeing the Rozmax guys all painted up, good to see a unit of them here in a CDO army blog.
I admit I'm biased in that I love Big Hats, but Rozmax's sculpts are WAY better than the FW ones...just my biased opinion of course ;)
When you get them painted, please be sure to share pics with all of us :hat off

Heavygear:

On a slaving run to the eastern mountains the Brotherhood ecountered a tribe of spider worshiping night goblins known as the Web Dancers. A fierce battle ensued. The greatly outnumbered dawi zhar would have been defeated if not for Zhorahms intervention. The sorcerer lord issued a challenge of arcane combat to the Web Dancer shaman who rode atop a mighty demon spider, The shamans pride proved to great and the challenge was accepted. The duel lasted for hours but the Dark magic of the chaos dwarfs is potent and the goblin shaman and the great spider were defeated. Zhorahm made an example of the goblins, enslaving them all. He even enslaved the spirit of the spider and imprisoned it in one of his terryfying daemon engines.

On a slaving run to the eastern mountains the Brotherhood ecountered a tribe of spider worshiping night goblins known as the Web Dancers. A fierce battle ensued.

The night goblin shaman called forth Hesperix the massive Archnarork spider revered by the misguided night goblins. Seeing their deity emerge from the deep tunnels and rampage across the battlefield enticed the goblins into a battle frenzy. The tide of battle turned against the beleaguered Chaos Dwarves.

The greatly outnumbered dawi zhar might have been defeated if not for Zhorahms intervention. The Conjurer singled out the shaman riding atop the terrifying arachnarork and the battlefield erupted in arcane energy as the two mages battled for supremacy.

The wizards duel ended in the shamans defeat and the death of Hesperix. The night goblins courage failed and they fled in panic.

Zhorahm made a an example of the Web Dancers. Enslaving the stronger specimens and slaughtering the rest. He made a trophy of their chosen goddess Using dark necromantic magic he imprisoned the soul of the evil Hesperix in the hull of a specially designed daemon engine.

Now the remnants of the Web Dancers march to war under the whip of the Blackshard overseers. Their once revered goddess still marches along beside them on appendages of iron and brass towing the massive artillery of the Dawi Drath Zhar. A constant reminder of the price for defying their terrible power.

Admiral:

Nice background and conversion.
