[Archive] The new Doctor Who

clam:

I have fun memories of the old Docter Who series. Watched it a lot back in the early/mid-eighties.

Are the new series worth watching? Don’t think they are shownd here in Denmark - so I’m thinking about picking up a complet serie or two - for my comming holiday.

Any series in particular you UK guys can recommend? - which doctor ( Eccleston or Tannant) do the job best? Any episodes in particular I should look out for?

Hashut’s Blessing:

Personally, unlike almost everyone else in the country, I actually thought that Eccleston was great as the doctor and I wasn’t as fond of the more child-aimed version that Tennant was made to play. Not to say that I disliked Tennant, nor thought he did it poorly, but it’s not the way I’ve always thought of the doctor behaving…

bas_2312:

You should really just start with Eccleston and continue with Tennant. Both are very interesting, but I think it’s better to watch it all so you can follow all the stories.

Eccleston is darker and a little more serious, while Tennant is more emotional and goofy.

sundrinker:

personnaly i like the old series more as in the new one things end up very soppy

ie: cyberman crying oil because he doesnt want to be a cyberman

dalek blows itself up because its tired of being evil

Kered:

I liked Eccleston, Tennant was also good there were some episodes that are terrible such as the on were he get a daughter.:frowning:

Tom Baker is still my favorite though.

cornixt:

Avoid the Russel T Davis episodes because they tend to be rather purile and have deus ex machina endings.

Grimstonefire:

I really liked Tennant, he brought some good emotion to it as well (not just the crazy stuff).

I don’t get the feeling watching the new guy that he has been around hundreds of years and seen the destruction of solar systems etc.  He isn’t bad imo, as an actor, but he doesn’t seem anywhere near as convincing playing ‘The Doctor’ I think.

Incidently, I was posting over on warseer a random theory of mine;

River Song is the doctor… From where reality split. It would explain why she knows the doctor’s present and future, as it is her past. It could also explain how she ‘killed’ him and knows so much about the tardis.

Interesting theory!

Kered:

What if she is the Doctors daughter.

Thorne:

Eccleston was a great doctor who, Tennant took the part very close to the edge of madness quite quirky but still great. The new guy I hate with avengance, He just doesnt seam to have that vital spark of something which made Eccleston and Tennant great doctors, Personaly I would have put Tennant as a better allround doctor than Ecclestone just because Tennant made the role unique and deffinately all his own.

bas_2312:

But Tennant had 4 seasons to develop his doctor, where Eccleston had only one.

And I like the new Doctor. At first I wasn’t really sure, but after seeing him in the last few episodes I think he’s really good. He has the crazy side of Tennant, and also the angry side of Eccleston. And he has the best assistant… Amy Pond… :o

Thorne:

Oh dont get me wrong Eccelstone will go down as being one of my favorite Dr Who incarnations for a good long while he played the part so well but Tennant well Tennant played it the style I had become used to watching Tom Baker do it so well back in the day, Followed to me by a sligth let down Peter Davidson whom to this day I cannot watch. But that said preferance and all wouldnt this world be so boring if we all liked the same things.

Ronshank:

I don’t mind the new guy he looks kind of alien to me. But then I prefur his side kick, she is so spunky I like that you can tell they are building up to something with her. I like that everyone can watch the new doctor series, at least it’s not something you have to switch off stright away because you know CSI are going to find a grizzly body in the first minute.

Every actor is different some will hate them, some will like them but they just about all have to be given time to warm up. Very few actors are exactly what you would expect from the get go and nor would you want them to be. It would be pretty boring if they were all carbon copies of each other.

Loki:

And he has the best assistant.. Amy Pond.. :o

bas_2312
That he does it good to see an assistant that has some fire and can throw the doctor off his game some times rather than one that just follows him like a lap dog and gets in to trouble all the time, i gave up watching the last few series but this series has got me back in to it :)

clam:

Thanks guys, as already guessed people have strong feelings regarding the right doctor.

I’ve decided picking up the Eccleston series - and did so last night (after 2 hours in heaven (with Tony and Ivan)) - hopefully it will show up before my holiday in Spain (Mallorca)

GRNDL:

As much as I like the presence of some of the new Doctors, they’re not bold enough to write shows like they did in the 70s, and thus Tom Baker will always be the best doctor. The new show spends too much time on Earth, in Wales, and so on, and you don’t get much of a feeling that the Doctor is a master of time and space, IMO. The older series went anywhere and anywhen on a regular basis.

Also, Amy Pond uber alles.

slev:

A lot of people have bad-mouthed the new stuff, but I like it overall. RTD can’t write Dr Who fr toffee (although he does have good plots), and that was the big let-down.

A lot of the rest of everything is actually very similar to early Who, and a lot of people forget that.

Vasquez:

I really like Tennant… As mentioned he does a great job as the Doctor. I don’t think he’s as goofy as many say he is… Oh, and he’s really carismatic too. But then again I haven’t been able to catch up on the entire series… because I live in Denmark too. The country where apparently farts, boobs and pee is still the incarnation of humor/drama series hangs her head in shame Luckily BBC Entertainment aired the Tennant-seasons recently, and that channel is possible to view through some Danish “telly-providers” (what the… do you guys call that?) too

The Stormchild:

I quite like both actors and I thought they both did a good job.

But I don’t like the latest Doctor.

Ronshank:

Just finished watching the new one on Aus TV. I was like yeah finally someone did it! All these pretty girls with an amazing, nice, charming, usally quite good looking man and no one makes a move? come on. Of course by now one of his side kicks should have made a move. It was a good eposode. It’s weird talking about TV shows when you don’t know where everyone else in the forum is up to episode wise…still I would have never have gotten into Dr Who if the new sieries had come around. Frizzy hair, long scarfs, 70’s, just wasn’t my era. Now I’m interested to actually watch the others properly. I’m amazed how much I know already from the few eps I saw ages ago
