So, what do people think of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special?
It was better than I was expecting, but considering I didn’t have high expectations in the first place, that’s not saying much; it’s clear that Moffat wished he was writing a Silver Age Superman comic or a Marvel film. There’s a fair bit of stupid in there but it’s enjoyable despite that. I’d say it’s an improvement over his recent work, but still a shadow of his earlier stuff - the theme seems to be the ‘Doctor as a Fairy Tale character’ theme from Smith’s tenure respun into a ‘the Doctor as a superhero’ one. It kinda works, although may have been better if it had been established at the start of either Capaldi’s tenure or his successor’s.
