[Archive] Tokheim's Beantown Bashers

Tokheim:

From the Lord’s name which I picked up off an old gas pump,

And the nickname of our town, which processes a LOT of soybeans!

So descriptive, if not very formal…

So I got fifty Chaos Dwarf figs primed black, they are a mixture of old 3rd edition GW chaos dwarfs, newer Russian Alternative ones, some Titan War-games, some Rackham Mid Nor, some home-made plus some odds and ends that fit in.

Also primed were twenty shields and three bases for the greenskin bolt throwers. Dug out plenty of orcs and goblins to use as hobgoblins or slave orcs/gobbos of various manufacturers. Wolfboyz too…

Check.

So early this morning before work, but after I let the hounds out, I got red and yellow on the lava on the war machine bases, check.

Got the base nasty pink/red shield facing on all twenty shields, check.

Got some armor started on one trooper, and flesh on a Rackham one plus his shield.

At least I’m painting! Seriously, it’s been since the fall of 2014!!!

Abecedar:

Prep work can take forever. And I still miss some mold lines. At least your table is set up

Tokheim:

Here is the first batch of plastics from just now,

Not entirely happy with them, they don’t seem proportionally correct.

Got the primed Avatars of War CD in there for scale reference.  The two on the left are straight 5th edition plastic Dwarf Warriors with chaos weapons and heads.  With some green stuff for beards.  More work to be done there.  The guy on the right is the same edition Chaos Warrior, took my jewelers saw and cut off his shins, his thighs, and his upper arms to shorten his legs and arms. Still a pretty BIG figure for a chaos dwarf!

Size wise he works, but he is BIG!  I guess some other ranges have big ones though, Russian Alternative, AoW, etc.  Could work!

Tokheim:

These are not my primed figs,

Those are SO BLACK!!!  You can’t really see the details on them, so I’m trying to go easy on your eyes!  The next batch I just got in, Hasslefree Chaos Dwarfs, they are very nice figs!  Scale wise they fit, detail wise they are perfect, all three can fit into my Great Weapon unit of warriors.

Left to right beside the AoW one are; Volath the Vengeful, Klagg Morgrielf and Balgin Bloodaxe.  They fit our 20mm bases decently I’ll juggle them a bit to make sure.

About the bases, going with the straight 20mm sized ones that I have tons of (still), with some thin particle board for the basalt/igneous rock, and some plumber’s putty for the lava flow.  Should paint up decently, I’ll start dark of course and work up from there.

Tokheim:

And thanks to Admiral for the technical assistance!!!

Batch three are the 2nd generation plastics, I’m liking this approach better.  Still the base dwarf warriors but with some marauder bits added to them, they seem better proportioned.  Maybe I need to re-shoot for a better frontal, this seems too high for the short ones.

The left one is a Dibbuk or berserker, the right another trooper.

Do you want a better shot?

Tokheim:

Lastly,

Maybe a poll for you guys, I built this last piece a few years ago on a 100x150mm base, he could be used as a Soulgrinder or a K-Daii Destroyer.  Do you think he’s feasible, would he work as the big nasty?

I may have put him up here before, not sure, I’ll have to go check.  He’s since been painted up, this was the base work.  Combination of a Ghorgon and A-Rock spider.  Bullish enough!!!

At least HALF!!!

Fuggit Khan:

Tokheim
Wow! :o
Now that is a nice combo, I don't think I have ever seen those two models together like that before, pretty slick idea! I'm sending you some slaves for that :hat off

Tokheim:

I was very bored one day running a small local tournament,

I had the A-Rock and the Ghorgon kits, had this idea in mind for a few months.  Since I couldn’t play the ringer army, we had an even amount of players, I got to build this big nasty!

Here are some more pics from various angles if you guys didn’t see enough!

With one little teeny tiny Bretonnian knight for scale comparisons.  Got to thinking again, Skull Pass spiders for my BC’s/Tauruk?  Maybe some bigger spider bases for my 9th age monstrous cavalry Tauruk Anointed???

Like those cool Reaper models that look like the guy from the Scorpion King, the half scorpion/half King?

Abecedar:

Don’t see why it cannot be a Destroyer. We have heaps of different models and conversions so far.

gIL^:

Looks good. would make a cool destroyer.

Tokheim:

Following the lead of some of youse guys,

I went down to the dungeon and started sorting out my non-GW figures.  I found these old Grenadier sculpts, very big compared to the GW offerings.  I think they would be PERFECT Hobgoblin Wolfboyz!

So, started cutting (YES!!!) the heavy circular base off one of them, I think I’ll make him one of my heroes.  The 25x50 base is going to be elevated rock, as if he’s looking down on the battlefield.  Going for at least one unit of them, if not two, plus two heroes.  Among the figures is one that has to be a shaman, too bad we don’t have any greenskin mages! He’s the one that is front left, the heroes are in the second row with the half moon back banners.

Tokheim:

And for your viewing pleasure, the finished Destroyer/Titan:

Full frontal…nastiness???

Side view, I need to spin his base around so he’s not 150mm wide, but 100mm.  The base can be spun to go either way, his legs will fit both ways/configurations I made him.  Cut the base from the old Chaos Altar that GW made, their scenery.  But maybe a lava base would be better to keep in flavor with the army?

What do you think?

I could have done a better last shot, maybe if I fix the base or replace it, I’ll shoot you guys another one.  If I continue this route, I’ll have to make his little brother’s the same way, maybe using the Reaper arachnid models???

I think Reaper does have a TON of the half human/elf and spider models, the Bones range is definitely cheaper, but I like the older metal figs for their durability.  I don’t know yet if I want to use the Skull Pass spider riders for BC’s, I made one trial Marauder horse figure and didn’t like the way it turned out.

Suggestions?

I have some of them too, Much the same as yours, about 11 or 12 if memory is right. They are on my to-do list for starters this year. The solid bases make it hard to customize without chopping them off but sometimes it needs to be done. The others I just add PVA glue and sand in layers until it is built up.

Abecedar:

He looks very nice.

As to BFSP spiders to centaurs, I’m damn sure I’ve seen it done somewhere.

Also I have a series of 4th Ed BC to other sized models in comparison pics. If you’d like I will see if I can find them.

Surely!!!

Stick them up!

I found out EARLY, that for this army, it's important to paint the bases before, I repeat BEFORE, painting the actual chaos dwarfs.  When I dry brush the painted figures, I put the gray stone onto their little feet.  So, doing bases first.  Some early base work, with a little paint on some figs too.

And then, some wolf boy bases.  Yellow is a bit much, I think red followed by shades of orange is best for the lava under the rocks.

Wanted to do a little every day before work, so got to hang it up for now.  I am trying to be a regular blogger though, I'm going to be good about this!!!:)

Hill_Billy_Bub:

Everything looking great so far. I expecially love the moster you made

Axtklinge:

Nice work on the bases, and really nice monster!

Cheers!
