So, here I am finally throwing my hat into the ring and starting this Dawi Zharr army at last. I’ve been threatening to do this for years, but now seems the time to get cracking. I’ll be using the Indy GT list, 2500 points.
The theme will be a slaver force, ranging far from the chaos dwarf heartland, led by a priest of Hashut. To that end there will be a good bit of heavy support, kolossus, Inferno golems and so on, with a daemonsmith to tend to them. I am firmly entrenched as a fan of 3rd ed Chaos Dwarves, which is fine for rank and file, but I’m going to have to get creative with annihilators and command figs. I am planning on ordering some Bederken’s wonderful dwarves, but I’ll still have to convert some standards and musicians. I’ve been watching Mantic’s rumblings about their khaos dwarf range, but what I’ve seen so far does not fill me with joy.
I’ll update as often as I can, I have three armies vying for attention now, chaos dwarves, vampire counts and fimir, so I’ll need to juggle a bit. For starters though, here’s what I’ve assembled for my obsidian guard with great weapons. I just need a standard and musician to complete a 25 man unit.
These are old Leviathan dwarves. They are a little big compared to 3rd ed chaos dwarves, but I think the one on the right would make an excellent daemonsmith.
Onto the kolossus. I think one of these two will do nicely. I’d love to field two, but, too expensive…
So, hopefully I will have a test model for the obsidian guard up soon, here we go…
Cheers Nitro. I’ve just seen Bob Naismith is working on the goblinoids for Mantic. That, in my view, is excellent. The green for the hob-gobbo(?) looks great. Fingers crossed my sneaky gits are on the way!
Wow Mr Saturday, nice start to your 3rd ed collection! Such great pieces… Can’t wait to see yours painted up! Love the Kolossus idea… The Leviathan pieces are pretty cool.
What were you going to do for a standard and musician for your 3rd ed unit?
Thanks dncwlf, I’ve been amassing them a while now, chaos dwarf hunting should be a recognised bloodsport. I think I might use the command figs from either Bederken, Mantic if they are nice enough, or convert some myself from various bits. I’m kind of waiting to see if the Mantic dwarves are to my taste. The Bederken ones certainly are, but I think the command might suit a regular chaos dwarf unit better than obsidian guard.

Mr Saturday
Ah, sounds like a good plan. I can't wait to get the Dwergs myself (I'm hoping they come wrapped up under the x-mas tree ;) ) I have used one of the 3rd ed guys to make a standard bearer, I'm just looking for the right one to convert to a musician... but as you said.. it's a bloodsport!! ha!
:hat off
Okay, I’ve got the Kolossus of choice at test-fit stage. I think the chariot base is a tad small, I think a 60x100 will be needed. (I just noticed the legs are on backwards, Gods bless bluetack.) Now the humongous decision of colour scheme. I find a lot of the 3rd ed and MM90 series colour schemes tend to favour green armour, which is tempting. Blue’s MM90’s are splendid, and the metallic combined with lacquered armour look appeals too. Hmm. As for basing, I’m thinking of a ruins and rubble look.
On a side note, is there a tactica for Kolossus anywhere on the site? it seems they are pretty much just firing platforms with not much close combat punch.
Thanks Clam, I hope it will be, I’ve been nurturing the desire to paint this army for many moons. I find joining a group like this is a great way to get one’s finger out. @nitroglysarine, the other mark 3 is much more detailed, it has ornate grenade launchers and more decoration on the face, chest and arms. I just like the guy with the two massive cannons. I’m hoping the flat areas will let me go to town on weathering.
Now, I’ve mustered two more dwarf units. The both need standards and musicians, and one is missing a trooper, one of the last few MM90s eluding me. Here they are.
Fantastic classic models. I saw that Fimir are another of your armies… Hopefully we can see some if them in the off-topic section? What do you play a fimir army as?
Looking forward to seeing this force grow. It’s a great concept and a great start.
Thanks Blue. I’m sorely tempted to draw inspiration from your own fine dwarves. These are the MM90’s I need to finish the collection.
@Redhammer, ah the Fimir. The Fimir are as beloved a project as the Dawi Zharr. I could go on all day about the Fimir. The army is still being assembled. It’s a Fimir of Albion army, with both Fimir and humans. I plan to use the warriors of chaos list, as it allows me to have a sorceror (the meargh) as the general. I have all the citadel Fimir and I plan to use them as a unit of Fianna Fimm and Nobles, both counting as ogres. The new bog raiders from bloodmoon miniatures will serves as Fimm (chaos warriors) Celts from various ranges will serve as shearl, (marauders, cavalry and chariots). Fen beasts as trolls, and a few other bits and pieces. I got a lot of inspiration from the Warpstone Fimir special, issue 25. The army will mostly use the mark of Nurgle to represent the mists.
See what I mean about going off on a ramble? Now, back to the chaos dwarves. Test model is next, will try to get him done over the holidays.
Right, in my quest to source models for my rapidly growing army, I’ve unearthed this guy. I think it will make a very fine earthshaker. It was originally a Leviathan dwarf mortar.
Cheers tjub, it’s taken a long time to collect! Okay, a (very small) update. I have the test mini for my obsidian guard ready for priming. He’s got a base that suits my ruins theme, and he has plenty of different texture areas, cloth, armour, skin etc. He was a bit of a trial to clean, lots of flash and mould lines. I’m torn between having flames on the bases to make it look like the army is moving through a razed town, or a more ancient ruins look. I like the flames thing, but it could be murder doing osl on half the army. I’ll have to mull it over.
