Kera foehunter:

The price is just nutty, the sculpts waaayyy too busy, and the material is crap.

But there is a sucker born every minute...so I'm sure they will do well...

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but those are very subjective statements. The material is very good quality and in my time with FW resin models, have never seen a bad cast.  How complex they are as a model is a matter of taste. Some people like cleanly designed models (I know I do) as they are quicker and easier to paint. Some enjoy having something laden with details, taking it as a challenge or as a display piece.

Forgeworld are expensive because they are niche models and produced in relatively small batches compared to plastic injection molds, or white-metal centrifugal casting. They could be molten blobs as Kera snidely suggests, and they'd still cost a bit more. GW is running with the idea of FW being prestige models and hiking the $$$ up appropriately. Of course not everyone can afford the models - that's the point. It creates a divide and emphasizes the status value of the models.

As with all models, you either like em or you don't. If you do, then you will likely try to shell out for them. If not, then why disparage people from liking them?

GRNDL
pffffffffffff you had your opinion, NOTHING BEAT METAL ..
Your not that old to forget are you ??? they are called tin solders

AGPO:

Personally (and I know this will get me eviscarated by all the leadheads) but I prefer working with plastic and (dare I say it) Finecast to metal. The quality control issues with Finecast are another matter, and something GW need to address, but plastics are so much easier to convert and don’t get bent or chipped to the same extent. I like my collections to be unique, so convertability is a much bigger factor for me.

GRNDL:

Yeah, Forgeworld are expensive. So are Lamborghinis, Rolex watches and whatever other “prestige” items are out there.

re: Forgeworld charge what they can.

Yes, of course, not many companies don’t. Companies charge whatever the market will bear, and peep’s will pay for. Peeps keep buying Forgeworld because they are good, or desirable. Speaking from my own experience, the FW models I’ve bought are generally things I can’t get anywhere else, so yes, GW/FW corner the market on those models and reap the rewards.

Anyways…

khedyarl:

I agree with GRNDL, for the most-part. Price-wise, Forgeworld’s CD line has actually been relatively affordable in comparison to other GW minis, and in many cases cheaper than attempting to pick up the original CD minis on ebay, or another third-party site (assuming you’re not actually getting a counterfeit model, of course). As an example, 3 Demigryphs is 65 Canadian, while 3 Bull centaurs come to 72 Canadian. The three-character kit has already been discussed. A Stonehorn is 70 bucks, while Drazoath is 85. A box of Warriors of Chaos is 42, while a “box” of Infernal Guard is 47. Obviously not dead-on, but comparable.

As for resin vs metal vs plastic, anyone attempting to say that metal miniatures either carry more detail than resin, or are somehow else intrinsically better, you’re objectively incorrect. The technology has caught up, and Forgeworld’s resin carries as much detail as any white-metal (Or pewter, if you still have any) miniature on the market. The difference is purely taste, and taste alone. Some people prefer the heft of metal minis, and others prefer resin.

For my own, I prefer resin/plastic because they are easier to convert, and one stray arm won’t knock it off a table and destroy both the model and paintjob, but I definitely understand the allure of metal minis. I still have all of my metal CD’s, and the nostalgia of 4th and 5th ed rushes back when I play with them.

In short: No need for people to get snarky. I recognize that this is the internet, but we have a pretty good community here, we should all respect eachothers absolutely arbitrary choices of tiny war-doll. :stuck_out_tongue:

Vogon:

For me Resin has always carried better detail than metal as the mould material is softer and can carry an undercut better and allows for much finer detail.

This is one of the reasons that Forge World and others use it for the centrepiece and character models. If you look at some of the other companies using resin (anyone remember Ilyad Games?) their models were always more finely detailed than anything cast in metal.

For me the big question is metal versus plastic but that?Ts another debate ;).

As far as cost I think khedyarl has it correct but mostly because GW have put their prices up so much recently (£30UK for 10 models on foot in the latest High Elf release) that it makes Forge World comparably more affordable.

On these particular models, I like the banner made from the Wyvern Wing and the axe held by the Warboss but I?Tm not too keen on the Orcs actually holding them. I personally don?Tt collect Orcs so I won?Tt be buying these. £30UK does seem very expensive but then it costs £30Uk for Gorbad Ironclaw in finecast so it?Ts probably not too far off.

The Realm of Battle board is very nice but I don?Tt have the Realm of Battle set so it?Td be no use for me.

Cheers

What?! You don't like Grimgor Ironhide, man?! :o

He is pure awesomeness! :yar

Herby
nah he is ok i guess but nothing to get excited about...
maybe its the paintjob i dont know, i find the orc characters lacking...

Samanos:

the orc fluff is the best (its even better in 40k).

but the models… ugh…

Pyro Stick:

Tbh i dont think models photograph well at all and they are probably pretty cool in real life. The problem i have with these “command groups” is that they arent command groups at all and are overpriced. They are basically hero groups and the CD hero group is only £18,the IF Command £16. Makes you wonder if they deliberately set the CD price lower so people would be able to afford full armies.

GRNDL
Well, yes, to a point. I've spent my hard earned dollar on some things. Not fast cars, or big houses though. Red Green I would consider.

I believe that I get what I pay for and if possible when I buy I make sure I get a solid investment. Forgeworld have the goods. Over the years, I've probably spent close to $4k on Forgeworld Models of some kind or another. I definitely haven't done $4k worth of modelling on them though, so I'm guessing one day I'll be selling them.

Anyway, I'm guessing that you're better paid than I am, since I've been unemployed for the last 10 months.
