So with the demise of the versions of Warhammer Fantasy Battle as we know them, I’m curious. After a year in with AoS just what are doing for their fantasy battle?
In other words just what are you doing? In the earliest years of the site I remarked that GW was lucky that they had avoided the “Edition Wars” that plagued AD&D over the decades.
Haven’t been doing that much gaming recently and havent been in that much of a Fantasy mood lately, which is probably a good thing as my local club is in a more sci-fi period currently.
That being said, I have fund and glorious memories from 5th, 6th and 7th as well.
5th was my childhood with wacky lords on big monsters and physical cards to represent magic power and items. I remember it as being fun.
6th was great from a tactical stand point. The select system and impact heroes could have in the game made the core infantry soldiers come into focus. The streamlining did make some imbalances though, but the Dogs of War, Giants, Chronicle books and Albion campaign were great additions. I played Dark Elfs, and they had the most unbelievable weak army book…
7th was the chesshammer. The masterminds ruled this edition with careful position, bait units that purposely got caught when fleeing charges, thereby forcing the charger to move his full charge distant and open his flanks. It was somewhat taxing to play as you had to really try to play 3-4 turns ahead from your current turn.
8th is for me the right mix of brawl and brain, heroes and troops. But i acknowledge that I’m a hobby gamer, and as a competitive game I would find multiple lists unenjoyable to play against.
I'm on AOS at the moment, I had few games and it requires a couple of tweaks to enjoy it but it's fast and fun !
A shame that people have so much grief against it ^^

I think the biggest problem with AoS is that GW hobbled it coming out the gate; if it had premiered with points values and hadn't come at the expense of Fantasy then it would have been better received I think.
Well there?Ts also a few walls to overcome hopping over to it, I keep considering giving it a try but two things keep getting in my way. First off is rebasing, my dudes are magnetized to their bases so it couldn?Tt be easier, but it still feels like it would be a pain to go through and buy a whole sack of various sized round bases to convert over (and forget decorating those too!). Secondly since my army is like 95% none-GW theirs a fair number of places I wouldn?Tt be welcome to put it on the table, which is pretty discouraging.
There and then I played a AoS game recently. But principally 9th age is my main system. Even if I don’t agree with everything it is a great community and the game is very challenging. I’m looking forward to the world background which is announced for christmas. :hat off
I put “Other” for me. I have Kings of War and it looks wonderful. I am also a “play it painted” person, so it will be a while before my army is painted and based to my satisfaction and I can actually play. I’m considering some empty bases/trays to see how it plays and how I need to adjust. I’m mixing and matching RA & 4th edition minis for units/ immortals/etc, so there will be some more coming in the future, it’s just very slow and I am slowly buying the 4th edition Chaos Dwarves I want on top of everything else.
I do play Song of Blades and Heroes for a skirmish game. And it is wonderful as well. I can base however I want and I can play whatever minis I want. It’s also a great, simple system that I can play with my kids in an hour or so, so time is not a major issue as it is with our Pathfinder game.
I also have Dragon Rampant, which looks like it will be another simple, small skirmish game that I can use as a bridge to Kings of War. Maybe start a campaign in SoBH, then move to Dragon Rampant, then, finally, to Kings of War for scale… Hmmm… I think there have been some suggestions for something similar in the past.
Over the winter the kids and I will be playing 3rd. Since I have so many armies it should be fun.
I will need to put together a 3rd edition list for chaos dwarfs. Should be too tough as the parts are in the Chaos Ally, orc and goblin, hobgoblin sections of the Warhammer Army book and Slaves of Darkness.
I’ve always been a 4th and 5th edition fan (I hated 6th edition, not so much because of the game itself, but rather because it killed my 5th edition Night Goblin army).
But I have not played Warhammer (in any version) for at least a year…so I’m casting my vote for Kings of War, which I still play occasionally when the opportunity arises.
And I must admit, in many ways I prefer KoW over Warhammer in general.
