So before Tamurkhan existed days of high adventure in the CD community. Where new fangled ideas and concepts for how things could look were quite common.
Now that we have readily available models, is anyone thinking that their army is lacking a theme other than simply existing as a chaos dwarf army?
I know this is not limited to our army, most armies out there people can feel they’re lacking a theme. But for most of us we are all drawing off a small pool of models unless we are imaginative in our sculpting.
The other option for a themed collection is to work off a different list to tamurkhan of course.
So if you have a theme to your army, why not share it here and perhaps inspire others!
I think the theme of my army has always been the Hellcannon (and also lore from Grudgebearer). That model has defined the look of my whole force. Along with Ravening Hordes and other model updates (black orcs, etc), my look was defined by the generation where RH was playable.
Now that Tamurkhan is around, I am not sure whether to blend this in with my army, or make a separate one.
I always thought at my army as a force hailing from Uzkulak. That’s why I spend so much time in building tiles and pavimentation… I also have plans to include a couple of steam ships, and wouldn’t mind to try and recreate the Falls of Doom for an Army on Parade entry.
Having never actually started building a Chaos Dwarf army, as such, I suppose I’m in a position to put whatever theme I want on my little fellas. Aesthetically, I’m more of a masks sort of guy than a hats - I don’t really have any of the sentiment attached to the old sculpts, so I’m going to end up with a distinctly ‘modern’ looking army. I’ll be using mainly Baggronor’s royal guard models, and the Tamurkhan list, simply because I play some fairly grumbly opponents who aren’t really up for out of date or fan-made rulesets.
So, where does that leave me? I definitely want to theme my army, and I’m not a fan of the Tamurkhan ‘disgraced dwarves’ idea. Maybe a slave raiding party? The potential for black iron raiding ships as terrain pieces gives me an interesting conversion project (considering how little there’ll be with the Bagg’s beautiful creations), though are slavers not a fairly common theme? Methinks more thought is needed on this. Maybe the private army of some Daemonsmith or another? Something distinctive will jump out at me, I’m sure - I might even update with a slightly less ‘stream of thought’ post when I’ve got plans together
I made my dwarves a family/clan of adventurers and driven entrepreneurs who long ago left Zharr-Naggrund in favor of heading north into the depth of the wastes as traders and slavers, often heading south with some favoured warband to find new areas to plunder and send back to the great citadel.
This means my dwarves have loads of battle scarring and weird modifications to the normal running (Like my magma cannons handlers dumping bits of brettonian armour into the tank. A lack of the original magma ammo have made them use molten metal instead) to show they have been away from the original tech for some time now.
Funnily enough I sorta decided on theme before assembling models. Which I haven’t done really beyond “testers”.
Basically what I envisioned was a CHAOS Dwarf army. Because getting Big Hat wasn’t feasible and was expecting to use a lot of Chaos stuff. But the more time goes, the less firm it becomes.
My armies theme uses an extension of the Tamurkhan fluff. My Sorceror Prophet is Drazhoaths apprentice and nephew and in the aftermath of the rout at Nuln Drazhoath instructed him to set up a slave raiding camp in Death Pass. Full story is in the background section titled the rise of Kul-Ghaz for anyone interested.
My army is going to be based around the black port of Zhugulzar (the port mentioned in the Dreadfleet fluff). I want the port to have a feel of an area of political tension between various powerful Sorcerer-Prophets. Each of the factions donating troops to the port in order to protect their interests in the trafficking of resources and slaves that take place.
This is mostly an excuse for me to use miniatures from various companies and just say that the dwarfs are ‘from different fortresses’. It also allows me to represent many notable characters (Astragoth, Ghorth, Drazoath) through troops they have donated.
I enjoy the thematics of assyria and mesopotamia which is fueling my decisions for mine. I just begun sculpting again.
My vision is a more modern big hats with breast plates, pauldrons and featureless masks. Still in the early phases for my stuff but my sorcerers are the same as they had been. I will probably repaint them
I my imagination my CDs live at the north-east borders of the Dark Lands on the side of the Eastern Steppes.
The CDs are blessed with many different mutations and some are converted to Hashut from the other Chaos Gods. So there are many different influences and styles in my army. Some are very individual, others are quite uniformed.
The most obvious models are my great lizards on which some of my warmachines are placed.
Thereby I have the possibility to use all existing models in one army - from 3ed edition ones over BigHats (yes I own 1 model ) to the models made by Sjoerdo and clam.
My most favourite army list is Thommy’s. It is the one which gives me the best flexibility, so I can use all my models!
My army migrated from the big black tower city due to lack of space and being low in status.
Bloodbeard a sorcerer prophet has made an army og different low clans and families all wanting more than they had. He had a vision about an old grudge and a stronghold that used to belong to his ancestors.
I plan on making every regiment different. The fire glaives are one family, the hand weapon infernals another.
This way I can give each regimwnt a different twist and look. Planning to make a big hat GW clan too.
My army is on it’s way to drive a some dwarfs from their mountain stronghold, to make themselfs a new home. A home where they a the leading families. (Also my main opponent is a dwarf player).
The FW CDs look too much alike. I like to think that, every dwarf is a black smith, making his own gear and passing it down through generations. Perhaps taking it from rivals defeated in combat.
I’ll try too make my army look battleworn. Dust, soot, rust and so on.
