Iron Deamon Ideas

Hi guys, I’ve been thinking hard about scratch building a bighat iron deamon, the forge world model and Thomas style toybashes are nice but too impossible for my brain too build, like how the hell could you steer a train with no tracks, I need the model to make some kind of sense. So I’ve been looking at steam tractors as a model for the build, they are big, heavy, have smoke stacks and are designed to move over rough ground, a much better basis for a war machine. Anybody else who has thought of this before and wants to chime in or point me towards build inspiration would be Awsome.

I have considered steam tractors for use. The primary issue is that the models in general are too slim for the scale when compared with the chunkier Typical Chaos Dwarf aesthetic. That stated, I am collecting wheels and bits and bobs from these which will eventually be used to make a custom juggernaut. Thomas engine to start and steam tractor wheels for the traction might work well. Cheers!

I had kitbashed something somewhat similar in shape in a prototype for a Iron daemon I’m working on. Adding treads, a larger set of wheels, and some extra pieces would be required though to achieve the aesthetic you are looking for. Are you 3d printing or kitbashing for the poject?

Yes your right about the chunk factor here, these monopose warriors are even chunkier than usual, I did some playing with bits last night and it’s actually pretty hard for get two of those clunkers in between any two wheels that would be heavy enough while also fitting the base 60mm base.

This looks steerable, but where will you put the crew? I’m finding it hard to fit 3 crew in however I play with it, this base is a lot smaller than it looks one you start piling the bits up, might end up more like steam powered M113 at this rate. I’m going to be bashing the whole build, except the crew.

Has a large enough platform for one or two crew members on the completed version, it’s larger than it looks. Any kits in mind for the kitbash? I had one Iron demon that I have slowly been taking apart to source for my projects, plenty of parts there for the to work with. Plus added bits, from other kits, or spare bits, and it shouldn’t be too difficult to build what you have in mind, though it likely will be larger than a standard one.

No kits, im just rummaging around in the bitz and seeing where the muses take me, I want the build have wood grain texture in some parts, that’s really the only brief.

Ok I’ve started to work of this build last night, found some 1/35 scale oil barrels that are perfect for the steam tank, wheels scratch build from tension gears from 1/35 Sherman that has been donating its gear chain for years now. What do we all think?

Possibly the resin crew are slightly smaller, I’m trying to squeeze these chubby plastic models in there, I imagine literally anything else would have a less protuberant beard than these models.

Things I’m considering: addin a smaller set of wheels in the middle, this could extenuate the iron chariot look that I’ve ended up with, I like the idea of the demonic traction motor harnessed to a more conventional chariot body like a horse obedient to the reins.

I’ve got the firebox at the front in defiance of all logic, so I’ll need to build some kind of control box/steering system at the back of the water tank.

Some fly wheel/gear drive to power the wheels, wherever I decide the drive wheels should be.

Some kind of spiky bitz at the front? A demon face? A cow catcher? Something to do the impact hits anyhow. I am tempted to go for a whole tenderiser/skullcrusher contraption but the steam cannon seems like a more useful weapon, given the low movement, getting the charge in is far from a given.

I need to fill in/ make the smoker a bit taller.
