Is the Old World already broken?

Ah ok, so vortexes, yeah those get dispelled left, right and center, I generally don’t bother with them, but that’s mostly cause the vortex of chaos sucks

I’d say that simplification in and of itself ought to make the process more streamlined i.e. faster, but only if you’ve got the hang of it, of course. In my games I usually have a rough, if not clear understanding of which spells I want to cast, and where, before my turn starts. Dice role-offs ensue, and that’s it. 5 minutes at the very most (in conjuration, at least).

Magic has an impact - not so much vortexes - but not as much as in 8th, that’s pretty clear by now. A well placed buff or hex can definitely swing the tides of a battle, no doubt.

I’m wondering what in particular was time consuming - choosing which spell to cast? Looking them up? Deciding where to cast them? The cast/dispel procedure? Checking dispel ranges? There just isn’t enough there for it to make sense to me that it’d all take 40 mins to get through it  Unless you were exaggerating ofc.

My friend took like 4 wizards in a Khemri army one time (and only once), and they all have abilities to fire off as well. That game did take like 5 hours, but his opponent was slow and they were both new to the thing.

That is quite the statement  Vortex of Chaos is not a top tier vortex, I give you that, but Vortices have a huge impact, especially with the way dispelling works.

I’m speaking out of sheer and utter ignorance  I have yet to see a vortex do anything that a bit of shooting or other couldn’t do instead.

It’s rarely about direct damage output, although pillar of fire is certainly effective (as the direction can be determined by the caster and so you can move it back and forth. Especially good against densely packed armies and/or lots of skirmishers or units in cover cause you don’t need to roll to hit)

Vortices are key for board control and other shenanigans. Crystal column right in front of that chaos blender lord on dragon remains one of the most effective counters against it. Tempest right in front of your unit about to receive a charge or to blocking some narrow gap is awesome too. Phantasmagoria is a key component of panic/terror lists and so on.

Edit
Oh and that necromancy one with the LD and Inspiring Presence! Would love to have access to it

Elementalism Vortex is great with Wind blast. You place a template and then push a unit into it. S4 ans S5 hits… Nasty. Then next turn template moves and you get hit one more time before your oppnent dispells it.
