Hello all. This is your host, Oxymandias, bringing you another exciting episode of “off topic” forum blogs.
As a lad, I had a third edition Ork army paid for with pocket money. It was a labour of love. And it looked terrible.
Liberal plastic glue use and a penchant for enamel paints rendered army uneasy on the eye.
That was my Deffskulls.
When I was a teenager, about 18, I restarted the army. I played an awful lot of (5th? 6th?) edition 40k until my mid twenties and my army was a messy mix of home made kitbash conversions and other methods to make an army on a student’s budget. I still own and love these guys but a pretty army they are not.
They were my Bad Moons.
Now I’m in my mid 30s and there is a rumbling in the air. The call of the waaagh…The algae in my blood rises and the need to “Krump beakies” returns.
I’ve started another ork army.
These are my Goffs…
This army will be being used in both and GorkaMorka campaign as mobsters and inevitable replacements for deaths but also as a growing army. I’m aiming for a third ed aesthetic, inspired by the third war for Armageddon, but will use the army in second edition games.
This blog will serve as a record of their growth from mushrooms to murderers, ready to board the nearest space hulk and ruin someone’s day!
More boyz en route. Smashing together fantasy and 40k kits. The cross compatibility with these and customisation allowed by these kits has always filled me with joy!
A stompa I got very cheap about 15 years ago (about £20?) was missing bits but was enough to make something.
I dropped it in a car park…in the rain…and it exploded into a million pieces !!!
I never went back to it but kept the most salvageable pieces in an old plastic bag.
I’ve moved home twice since and it’s come with me. And today decided to start rebuilding! Some areas were missing (even more than originally) but there was enough to b build the core parts. Then emptied my bits box to patch it up.
All undercoated and thankfully looking coherent (well as coherent as ork tech can!)
The back was missing the most pieces. All the exhausts etc are long gone. Some of the armour plates missing too.
Covered up with plasticard, granny grating, chicken wire and some toy cogs I got a hold of ages ago knowing they’d be useful for something.
If you’re wondering why it has no exhaust and has a giant cog on its back, it’s because it’s clockwork haha. The Mek has to spend a day winding it up before the battle begins !
Stormboyz! Got a good price on some original 3rd ed ones. We’re missing some bits but thankfully the nature of the old ork kits means it’s dead easy to complete them!
New unit almost complete. Just taking a moment to appreciate the face sculpts on this era of plastic ork. Beautiful boys. I feel the designers properly balanced the comedic exaggerated expression of the 40k ‘ooligan with the fear inducing menace of the one of the worst things that could stroll off of a space hulk to come ruin your day.
Gork (or possibly Mork) bless Brian Nelson and his successors who iterated on this kit. It’s a shame that as time goes on new kits will be the dreaded multipart monopose but it’s at least good that we can still get these guys for 40k/ToW for now.
Affixed big man Tyrone to a base. I know models like this don’t come with them but I feel it makes it look more like a miniature this way. Used a blobby scenery base. May add some grots around his feet in a little diorama?
Anyway - literally bolted him down! There’s a long screw running through the base, into a foot, and up inside his leg. Should help him stay in place!
Warboss incoming. I’ve tried to recreate the Warboss I had as a kid. Was a simple headswap for the codex Armageddon Ghaz model.
I had two incomplete and battered ghaz models and the actual original head from when I was a kid in the bitz box. Had to get creative to complete it, such as finding a similar but not identical boss pole. I also added a snotling chained to his mega armour on his back, which wasn’t present in my original conversion because I thought it was funny and could be his packed lunch. This alongside playing with the pose hopefully creates a model that is using the old ghaz as a base, but has quite a different silhouette.
Tragic kitbash nerd that I am, I noticed this lovely grippy arm twice.
Where is it from?
I like some of your mix of limbs because it helps the orks look a bit more lopsided and asymmetrical which I think running “straight” 3rd ed era orks sometimes lacks compared to the misshapen rogue trader era.
Well spotted - it’s the pig poking arm from the orc boar chariot. One has been left as is. And another turned into an axe using 2nd ed plastic goff axe head. (You may even notice that the base model for that guy is an assault on black reach not original boy. His other arm is pointing out to his side as opposed to face on. I have quite a lot of those in the loft. Will sprinkle them about for some pose variety later I’m sure )
