Pyro's Continuing Blog: New Range Thoughts

Amazing stuff! Now I’m really curious what will be next - with dwarfs on griffons it seems like nothing is impossible in this Chaos Dwarf force!

You could slant some forward and some back on their slotta bases. That should work?

Here’s the latest army shots of my 3rd edition collection, collected and painted over the last 16 years. Its still ongoing, but there’s a chance ill be moving abroad for the next one to five years so I have no idea when ill get a chance to take another photo like this. I just hope I managed to get everything in this one because it was an absolute mission getting it all out of storage.

This is the entirety of what I’ve completed so far, apart from a few missing shields here and there. I’ve also stuck the juggernaut boar centaur with the incomplete Whirlwind because you could barely see it anyway. My plan now is to strip the crossbowman painted in a snow theme and the mortar crew and repaint those. Mortar will also be rebased onto a base the same size as the swivel guns. I would also like to get a second one to even out the army.

Complete MM90 series. Tempted to get another mage so I can get a pic of the complete unit without having to use the ones with diorama bases…

Took the opportunity to get a pic of the MM90’s + Nominus Malus together

MM90 doubles, Nominus Malus, some Clam minis + extras

Crossbowmen

Renegades

Swivel Guns

Bazookas

Mortar

Tenderisers

Whirlwinds

Juggernauts

Asscannon

Mages

Don’t know why some of the pics are coming out washed out and looking like a faded red instead of the bright red they actually are. I bought a light box but it doesnt seem to have helped.

After this I am only planning on adding some models from the OSM Kickstarter. Ill be getting a Perforator, 8 more crossbowmen, 4 Heavy Boar Knights (which I will add to the unit of 4 Bear Knights), the Mounted General, and enough single models to even out the units (or maybe some OSM command groups).

Incredible army pyro, gives me great joy to look at (very valuable too!!).
The frost pyromancer colour scheme is lovely, the yellow headed Whirlwind really stands out too. If you have time you could highlight the other war machine face screens to this level.
You went for khorne colours just like in the rule book and nearly all gw too. Never sell it!

The asscannon really fits in well there. 5 f#$%ing sorcerers, each one of those goes for £15-20 on ebay haha

Wonderful wonderful collection :hatoff:

Beautifully done, old school army. The paint job’s look great, and loving seeing the whirlwinds and juggernaut painted so well. The multiple schemes for the mage, are also so very cool. Glad you got this out and put it all together! Worth the effort!

@Zoddtheimmortal I totally agree about the colours on the war machine faces, I will brighten them up the next time I get them out of storage.

I was hoping I would be able to post a few more updates here but life has been incredibly busy recently and I’ve barely had time to pick up a brush in the past few months.

I managed to pick up the Vizier Tower from MoM Miniatures cheap, a model I’ve had my eye on for a while. I was planning on using it as a chariot or something unusual for my 3rd edition army but its a lot chunkier than I was expecting and it will probably look a bit ridiculous next to the juggernauts. All I’ve had time to do so far is to sort the pretty horrible mould lines/slip and get it undercoated. Also didn’t notice there’s nothing connecting the bulls to the chariot until I started building it so its going to need some conversion work as well…

I was pretty happy with how my AC entry turned out despite it only taking about half an hour on Hero Forge. I’m half tempted to order a few prints of it for myself. I’m looking forward to seeing how OSM’s boar centaur units turn out.

My plan this year was supposed to be to move to China in about two weeks but at the last minute that plan has changed and I’m now going to be moving to Amsterdam for the next four years. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a few small things finished before then. Also if anyone knows of any jobs going in Amsterdam that would be great haha.

Wwo thats cool, good luck in Amsterdam! If you ever want to meet up for a pint and some miniature talk let me know

Another unexpected addition. I don’t know how long I’ve been after this model but it has to be close to ten years now. I’ve only seen it come up on eBay two or three times.

Unfortunately the previous owner seems to have used a resin epoxy or something to weld it to the base and glue the arm on, which has also covered half of that side of the body and the chainmail at the bottom, so I’m going to need to find something strong to strip it all away. I’m also concerned about the double mould line and mould slip. I would have thought for an unreleased model that all copies would be master copies but there could be a reasonable explanation. Still happy to have it in the collection but it’s going to take a lot of work to clean up.

The double mould line & shift are indeed a bit concerning but there could be mundane explanations (aside from the obvious one). One thing I noticed is that the metal looks very bright, very much like the later alloys used in the 90s – not the first choice for private individuals due to being harder to cast. One explanation I could think of is that they wanted to test how new lead-free alloys behave in production moulds (the US have outlawed lead in miniatures from 1990 on, GW has likely prepared for that in advance).

For the resin, I would try acetone first. That stuff dissolves basically all plastics (including nitrile gloves).

+1 for acetone.

I’m pretty happy with how this turned out, although it’s size and scale doesn’t match any of the other centaurs, and painting tartan is way too fiddly for me. I designed it on heroforge and got it printed on Etsy. Altogether I think it cost less than £8.

He looks really imposing. Great mini and who does not like a bagpipe.

Clan Pyro tartan is cool too

Thought I’d drop a few thoughts on the new range while the dissappointment is still fresh. I apologise for the silence in the chat last night but everyone else seemed to be so excited haha, didnt want to ruin it. Also I think someone called my name but I missed it, sorry about that.

I looked through my emails and the oldest Chaos Dwarf reference I could find was from 2004 when I ordered some blunderbuss and bull centaurs from GW for £2 each. I must have joined Hand of Hashut around then, and CDO around 2007, hoping for the day we would get a new range. 2004 must have been around the time GW were clearing the last of the old stock. Wish I’d bought more but never thought I would be waiting 21 years for them to finally support them again. I also now regret not picking up more of the forge world range.

I had such high hopes from the recent Blood Bowl releases, and from the Forge of the Chaos Dwarfs Total Warhammer expansion. The aesthetic looked great, and it captured the essence of the classic range perfectly. The faces, the beards, the hats, the armour. I thought we were on track for a perfect AoS/Old World army release.

What we got with the Helsmiths, for me personally, is almost a worst case scenario. I don’t understand how they managed to stray so far from what makes Chaos Dwarfs what they are. It’s like they were designed by someone that had never seen the original range or the forge world range, but instead just watched the Warcraft movie. They dont even look like Chaos Dwarfs to me, but some sort of weird Dark Dwarf/Half-Orcs?

The faces in general look like they took most of their inspiration from the Warcraft orcs. I dont understand why the tusks have become their most prominent feature. I saw one model that had such large tusks it looked like they were about to poke out his eyes. The worst offenders are the new blunderbuss models.

These models are absolutely dire. The clean shaven ones look horrendous and really makes the faces look more orcish (similar to orcs or goblins from the LOTR/Hobbit range), and the ones that do have beards are way too small. Considering the “Big Hats, Best Hats” tease, I was actually expecting some decent big hats, but these T shaped “hats” are not it. Dont know if anyone here ever played Lost Odyssey but the hats and swords reminded me of the enemies in the opening sequence. Everything is just so lacking in detail. There’s no arrows, lightning bolts, hashut rune etc, just plain flat surfaces with gems that look like haribo candy. I know the forge world infantry didnt have big hats either but they still managed to create a range that were noticibly chaos dwarfs, and lost kingdom gave us a glimpse of what could have been.

The overall lack of detail in this range is also obvious from the warmachines (also the static look of the golem), which should have been the highlight of the army. Those wheels only have slightly more detail than a milk bottle lid. Compare the bombard with the hellcannon and you can see just how plain it is. Its like the range took more inspiration from Matic’s “cheap and cheerful” style, instead of the updated classic style of Lost Kingdom. I know LK only produce stl files for high quality resin prints so the plastic kits would never be able to match the detail and intricacy of some of the grander warmachines but it’s a shame GW went so far in the opposite direction. The stripped down, very basic look doesnt work for me at all and overall everything just looks cheap.

Considering how many years the rumours have been going around about a new Chaos Dwarf army, I really expected then to come up with something much better after all this time. It looks like they were churned out in a few months instead. Did they think the market was already saturated with third party ranges that honoured the classic style? Did they think there was no interest in the classic style from the forge world range not selling enough? Or is it because its AoS and the classic style is reserved for Old World? Are we going to get an Old World army in the style of the Forge of the Chaos Dwarfs “models”?

I guess a positive is that so many people seem to be happy with what we got, and its great that we even have a new range in the first place, and we finally get a proper army book. I’m hoping that much of my dissappointment is down to the paintjob, which does everything it can to distance itself further from the classic style. I’m also hoping that there will be more releases in the future that have more in common with the classics. If the kits are multi-part enough then hopefully we will get some decent conversion kits as well. I’ll probably pick up the book at least, since it will be easy enough to proxy the units with others, and I might pick up a kit to see if it’s really as bad as it looks or if a paint job can salvage it, but I won’t be going all in. I’m going to grab the Blood Bowl team and convert them instead, and then stick with LK 3D prints.

If anyone in or around Amsterdam wants to go for a drink to lament/celebrate, let me know.

Ps. GW deleted my critical comment on their Facebook page, as I’m sure they are doing with many others.

Hello Pyrostick,

you speak from my soul. I don’t like the new arange at all and you gave the same reasons that came to my mind.

I’m actually a bit sad for the AOS players too, the actual GW can design much better miniatures and stuff. But with the models, I just don’t know where the product designers went wrong.

I think those of us who were getting hyped in the voice chat yesterday came into it from slightly different angles. Personally I think a lot from this range is useable, but as conversion material mainly, and I think a few others mentioned the same yesterday. AoS player were probably the most hyped, but that’s not a game I’m at all interested in. Thus far I have seen no one who enjoyed the paint scheme GW came up with, so there’s no one that’s entirely happy.

I guess we have to wait until folks have the models in hand to see what we do with them, but until then the forum is probably not going to be agreeing on whether this was majority good or majority bad.

The GW paint scheme is a bit off putting yes, but some of the models look like they could be really fun to paint in a proper paint scheme.

I think by far the “blunderbusses” and the arty are the worst models of the range. The shooters look like sonic blaster from 40k, and the arty looks ridiculous. Huge lack of inspiration on their part for whatever that thing is. Especially compared to the hellcannon.

Yeah, I wonder what the difficulty was for them to do something more unique with this release. Art director who doesn’t value what we do. The hellcannon and crew are essentially what I’d like it all to be based on, but nothing really looks quite like it. At this point I’m happy for any new evil dwarf release.

How long are you in Amsterdam for? I reside down in The Hague.

I’ll be here at least another year, at most two.
