[TOW] Let's get competitive

I made a list with Overseer’s Sigil but I don’t know how I would play it, since I like flying my general around the board, and also with hobgoblins sometimes needing to walk alone to sit on objectives, I can’t count on them being close to the general. What are your thoughts on this?

Edit: I also need more hw/s hobbos, so far I’ve painted 40 with bows but only 12 with hw/s. I am going to rely heavily on unit fillers in my next tournament…

I’ve been playing around with it, too. Basically, I don’t think it’s worth it. If the Hobgoblins are going to lose a combat, it’s usually by A LOT, so LD10 doesn’t help that much anyway. I’d often just rather have 10 more hobgoblins for USR/keeping horde for CR purposes. But not really sure! I think I’d run 3 blocks of 25 cutthroats and just hope static res + numbers make it worth it. Especially because they’re just so cheap that I would always be happy for them to flee if they just inconvenience the opponent’s plans, it seemed worth it.

I really like 40 hobbos as the default unit size, often with a hobbo hero too. Both s bows and shield options are good. I prefer the shooting as i play defensively and want to encourage tge enemy to come to me. He aim is to take the charge then counter attack next turn. The bigger the holding the units are, the more time you have to organise your retaliation. Maybe next game ill take a unit of both types to hold the centre

I haven’t made a list since the big changes to Old World, but I reviewed a bunch of the advice posts.

Not seeing a lot of Black Orc Wyvern riders any more, and am seeing a lot of Sneaky Gits units!

Interesting stuff.

Can anyone summarize the big meta differences since the rules update?

Thanks!

Not a full answer, but the sneaky gits are good because of the matched play secondary objectives that they added. So now a sneaky git showing up in an empty quarter of the board gets 250 points (plus 60 points for not dying), so it’s a great return. It can also get 250 for destroying a baggage train. So it’s basically just playing to the objectives makes them worthwhile, not to mention if they can get into an enemy warmachine as well. It’s substantial.

And I didn’t play comp games before 1.5, but the changes to massed infantry give them more tools – more attacks if charged, better armor rolls, better CR. A hobgoblin block can beat a dragon through a challenge and static combat resolution now.

Appreciate the write-up! That static combat res is probably dissuading us from taking a Block on Wyvern too.

And so the great “oh shit I didnt have a wyvern in my existing collection” hobby boom of '24 comes to an end.

Something different. No big flyers. Just infantry. Not sure if I need 20 IG. I could drop one or two and give BO Veteran and/or stubborn… I also wonder If lvl2 is enough. 2 spells (fly, +1A, +1S) feels enough.

Fly(12) and depending on opponent. +1A/+1S or Assilement.

Yeah, hellblaster will do the trick lol. But the original question was cav.

Personally I would be happy losing a DE and Khan to their gun line, but then I tend to play infantry heavy army, so protecting them with combat res for the knights then.

Guys,

Is having 20 IG worth not having stubborn/veteran on Black orcs? I was thinking to cut few IG models to get those upgrades AND maby a unit of wolves…

What would You cut for 2nd Castellan?

it’s like 1800 points tied up in hard to kill units

I like to make my infantry mobile so it can work with flyers… But it might be hard to find points for a caster with lore familiar…

Ok, I feel like I might be going crazy because I keep seeing this.

1.5 has killed blunderbuss blocks… Right?

Volley fire can’t be used if you move and it can’t be used to stand and shoot.

So if you take more than 20, unless your 20x1 you’re firing front rank pretty much always

Unless your opponent moves within 12” of their own volition, you’re barely shooting any.

I think detachments are still great. 5-8 guys with D3 shots is great. But for me it feels like these big blocks are a huge point sink at 5ppm.

Am I missing something?

Why? I was sure it was the oposite. Volley fire was never like this. It was never a stand and shoot thing and never worked when moving. You always shooot from 1st line unless You win combat and do not follow up or fly to the flank of the enemy and he turns to face You next turn. BB are about a combination of ranged and melee/CR damage. Stand&shoot from 10 dwarfs is 20 shots that are added to combat res.

20+ models shooting is fiction. Very situational. Somthing from 8th edition (should have been changed to 10+). Just unexpected bonus. That is why I have no problems to cut 2-3 dwarfs for another Sneaky gits unit of something else.

On a hill 10x2 would work. Against large targets even a few more formations. But yes, that 20+ thing is a carrot on a fishing rod dangling in front of your face. Don’t chase it.

In my last 2 games with chaos dwarfs (at 1200 and 1500 pts) with 2 sorcerers i failed to cast even one spell. I was casting pretty much every turn and even had ruby ring of fire as well.

I rely on magic and small arms fire to whittle down threats to beatable ones in combat.

Thankfully the lamassu breath weapon is great. The little lvl 1 with talisman of protection gets thrown down the flank of least resistance and keeps shooting every turn. I could see a case for 2 of them at this points level but it probably takes too much away from the main units.

Im thinking about dropping daemonology due to no spells cast and using dark magic to more easily cast its magic missile

9+ is terrible to cast on lvl 1-2. I have to agree. I would love to see Your list with lamassu as I really would like to make him work.
