Hi everyone ! A couple weeks ago I started working on a zharralid lexicon. I first used the lexicon by Jack/SuspiciousEntity but quickly found significant differences between his work and what I was hearing.

So here is how I work:

- I use the english translation given in game and write it down
- Extract the audio files to slow them and hear it multiple times, write down what I get
- Associate english/dwarfs words and compare every single word with the official GW Khazalid lexicon I put in a board.
- When i’m sure about the meaning, after several more oral comprehension, I put the zharralid word in the dictionnary

Not that I don’t wan’t help or don’t trust someone else to work on it, but having a schizotypal personality disorder I need to do it my own twisted way ^^ But i’ll be more than happy if you have some suggestions and other text/audio sources I can work with !

Have a good day, Nils

This is fantastic! We’ve long wanted a larger dictionary of zharralid. It’s interesting that so far all words we know from both languages are the same.

There are a couple of resources here you might check out… The most salient being a list on the topic. (search Zharralid…) It will be interesting to see if there are any new additions to the lexicon from this new DLC coming out.

Hi everyone, I recorded while gaming a bit yesterday and was able to get twenty more sentences from various Chorfs lords, mostly translated so that makes nearly a dozen new words (klinka) added to the lexicon. That brings me to 356 entries, 165 zharralid words yet !

A difficulty comes from the accent, it seems to vary from Zharr-Naggrund to Dhrath-Kazad. For instance, some will say “Ud” for Us/Ours while other will pronounce it Ut. Some even slip a rolled R mid words like Servant of the Conclave faction Lord, saying Arbu rather than Abu for Father.

This slows me a little without being an obstacle. The main issue is the syntax and morphology of the sentences, most of the times words like Of, It, The, etc can take multiple forms in the same sentence, or change from one lord to the other.

At the moment I stick to translation word by word to get the most complete and accurate lexicon as possible

Peregrinus,

I’ve got a strong background in Historical Linguistics, and what we’re seeing in Zharralid is exactly the kind of natural phonological behavior you’d expect in a real language.

First, /d/ and /t/ form a minimal pair — they’re the same stop consonant distinguished only by voicing. Many languages flip between the two depending on dialect, emphasis, or speech rate, so variations like ud/ut or dhrath/thrath aren’t inconsistencies; they’re normal voicing alternations.

Liquids like /r/ and /l/ behave similarly. They’re sonorants, meaning they carry sound well, and in many languages they tend to break up heavy consonant clusters. This often pairs with epenthesis, the insertion of a small vowel (like /a/, /u/, or schwa) to make the cluster pronounceable. That’s why you sometimes hear uzkul → uzkural in shouted lines — the liquid triggers a second syllable.

These kinds of shifts happen constantly in natural languages, and seeing them in Zharralid actually makes the language feel more authentic and lived-in. It’s the sort of variation you’d expect across different holds or speech contexts.

Thanks for the explanation, I really love the fact that this details, as I expected, were introduced in the language to make it more believable and natural.

If you are interested in helping me decipher the gramatical structure of what I translated don’t hesitate 😁

Peregrinus,

I wish I had time now to assist, but work right now is really busy. Maybe if things calm down some, I can try to take some notes for you.

The original lexical list can be found here: [Zharralid dictionary - Chaos Dwarf Discussion - Chaos Dwarfs Online](https://discourse.chaos-dwarfs.com/t/zharralid-dictionary/26353/1) . I understand it was originally posted on the WH III forum.

Thank you for the links, I already watched the interview and keep Jack’s work on the side so I can compare his results with mine from time to time.

Call me crazy (and technically, from a medical point I am kinda ^^) but after a whole afternoon of work I was able to extract all Chorfs audio files from the game (roughly 3800). Don’t know how I will sort out the dialogues amongst that ton of files but i’ll get there eventually 👌

Peregrinus,

I’ve looked at the work that you’ve done so far and it’s quite a treasure already really! The transcriptions I think carry the most salient information really to break down what’s happening in Zharralid because it’s full sentences, so in effect, it gives us a sampling of syntax. I think too that as Andy mentions, it functions with a very heavy English core with four sources for lexical origin: English (a quite significant portion), Khazalid, Dark Tongue and Akkadian (while I wonder exactly how much actually is drawn from the later). I think that we could benefit from having a better understanding of “Dark Tongue” as well, which I’m not sure has been so flushed out (we have graphemes, actually they function more like pictograms, but we don’t have a lexicon per say to my knowledge from GW or CA.)

I am pretty sure too that from this data, phonetic maps can be created, and analysis of any morphology can be defined. We really only are missing larger discourse level examples from these samplings (meaning we lack interactive conversations in Zharralid), but I doubt (or at least I hope 😂) that your intention isn’t to have conversations in the language or create great written works or translations…

I do have to say though, Shakespeare never sounded as good as “Khazad-dur klinka: uzkul nar uzkul” (“To be or not to be, that is the question” - with a chorfy take on things? Literally “In hold- crisis, choose, death or not death” It at least recognizes the lexical presence of existance, negation, decision and challenge, but it lacks a defined copula “to be”… Translation would require us to derive a meaning that equates to the stark, brutal decision before Hammlet… 😂 )

Effectively 'im not sure either about how much old babylonian language was put into zharralid, neither dark tongue as you said it’s more of a pictural thing, bound to daemons rather than an everyday language norses would use.

Oh sure why not become fluent in zharralid  but what is quite difficult to me, as I only scratch the surface of the structure of the sentences, is like it seems the language is rather “put the words in right order” than really speak with subject+verb+etc, like “Iz av nei umgak fa bolgnash”, translated I have no use for pleasure but it feels more like “I have no shit for pleasure”, I don’t give a shit about pleasure ^^

I’m still working on the audio files of the game, hoping to find the Chorfs lords speech amongst 7,68Go of material

With a bit more work and help from a friend, we were able to establish some rules for the zharralid language I share with you:

**Personal pronouns**

Iz = I, Me

Uz = You

Wa = We

Af = They/You (plural)

**Present Simple: Pronoun+Verb**

Iz dok = I see; Uz karbu ta Dumleth va = You adress the Lord of

Slaanesh hangra = Slaanesh hungers

Af hangras(z) = They hunger, where s (or z depending on the accent) marks the plural

**Past Simple**

Like in khazalid, the suffix i marks the past like in “Wa drengi ekuz zall”: Dreng\>Drengi

“Ital ekuz gromthi zall dat fagi za”: Fag\>Fagi

Not an absolute rule because other words like Kubel (to cause) becomes Kubelu like in “Uz kubelu ud dammaz”, and we aren’t even sur the “u” is a mark of the past, because sentences like “Iz an lamudu uz” (I will tech you) use the “u” for the future

**Futur Simple: Pronoun+An+Verb**

“Iz an domitash”, “Da elgram an grafti fa ud”

**Conditional/Imperativ**

Shad = Should, Duruk = Might

When giving orders, pronouns are ignored to go straight to the verb and the action, like in “Kalz ! Gorog ud bolg !” = Come ! Toast to our shared wealth ! (in game traduction)

So you can assume something simple like

Present: Iz domitash (I dominate)

Past: Iz domitashi (I have dominated)

Future: Iz an domitash (I will dominate)

Conditional: Iz duruk domitash (I could dominate)

Imperative: Domitash! (Dominate!)

Peregrinus,

I’ve analyzed the vocabulary a bit with AI to see if we can’t pull out the English and Khazalid roots, to leave us with either Semitic based words (Akkadian was what was said to be referenced - and it’s something that we can recognize) and Dark Tongue (which is unattested save for a few phrases and names of demons). English showed a listing of over 120 words, Khazalid showed second. Both exhibit minor, predictable patterns in the changes made, most of which are substitutive morphemes that we can list, or simple vowel shifts or epenthesis, like I mentioned before. When I get a chance, I’ll make some notes for you on what I’m seeing.

As for syntax, Zharalid demonstrates a very clear SVO (Subject Verb Object) structure, Iz (subject) I an lamadu (verb - will teach) uz (object - you) like English. Further, it seems to show, per your analysis of tense structures, a simple future and simple past with additive particles like Germanic languages, instead of conjugations with additive particles (like Romance or Slavic Languages) or Agglutative particles (Semitic or Turkic languages for ex), save for the exception of the present perfect (and I might assume the past perfect), which as suffixes. I might go as far as to say that they retain a good bit of English structure in Zharralid, including particles for articles (at least a definite article, I can’t remember if indefinite articles are defined off the top of my head) for ex. that might seem extremely odd in some languages. I need to actually scower your transcriptions as well to really give a final version of any grammar, but I think the bulk of CA’s invention here is lexical and otherwise geared to make it recognizable to English speakers.

Off the cuff, as for Dark Tongue roots, I’ve noted a couple: dhrath, zharr, zhorr, nar- are examples of words we see commonly. Aksho- (summoning), Akhash/Akham- (pain, anguish), k’khaa- / ksy’iak / ksy’iakash - (unlocking of a gateway), dhaos/dh’akh/dha- (entropy, Nurgle), phaos/phao- (Tzeentch), mi/‘mi/omi (command, finality), gh-/ghur-/ghyr- (corruption), akh’/'akh- (death), khaa-/khaos/kha- (Chaos) are words I was able to gleen from some of the old references on Chaos. I also have noted that there are several morphemes in Dark Tongue, too many to list here. I think that idea shows up in Zharralid too and needs to be looked at closer.

As for Akkadian showing up - there are a few words off the cuff I recognize: Abu (father) and lamadu (teach) are two right away just from our chat here. I don’t think it’s extensive though on purpose. A peppering is enough to make it seem non-I-E and thusly “foreign” without confusing non-linguists that are just playing the game… Remember, their goal was to make Zharralid comrehensable enough that you can at least catch some meaning.

Well thank you a lot ma falosh dhrath ! Your analysis confirms what I worked on yesterday. I followed nearly the same process with Gemini AI and it seems we all come to the same conclusions.

I even spent a few hours translating sentences with him (gemini provided me english/french sentences to translate) and then I switched on speaking full zharralid with him, as much as possible with the words I have in both oral comprehension and dictionary, really fun !

I was able to translate some sentences of the lammasu as well. This morning I studied a bit the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1st ed supplement Stone and Steel for Dwarfs, as well as the quotes of Bardin Gorrekson in Vermintide, allowing me to add nearly sixty words to the khazalid section.

Thanks to Gemini, I compared SuspiciousEntity’s full work with both my documents. Here’s the summary:

This direct comparison between your V4 dictionary (updated using your slowed-down audio analysis) and Jack/SuspiciousEntity’s raw lexicon is fascinating. It reveals two distinct approaches to linguistic reconstruction: Jack worked with broad phonetic blocks modeled on English, whereas you applied a much more rigorous grammatical and etymological breakdown.

Here is a detailed comparative analysis of the major discrepancies, categorized for your dictionary: 1. Jack’s major misinterpretations (Resolved by your method):

Slow-motion listening to your audio tracks proves that Jack was often misled by the voice actors’ Eastern European accents, resulting in “phantom words”: The Capital: Jack: _Katzeneku_ (He heard a strange, Germanic-sounding word). You: _Kazit_. Your version is confirmed by Drazhoath’s line: “…uz kazit al ta karag” (turn your capital into a volcano). Jack invented a complex root where the game uses a short word. Slaves / Work: Jack: _Dugal_ (Slave) and _Grafti_ (Work/Toil). You: _Ardugal_ (Slave) and _Grafti_ (To work). Drazhoath’s audio clearly states: “Da elgram an grafti fa ud” (The weak will work for us). _Grafti_ is therefore an action verb (to toil/work) rather than a noun, confirming your rule for the future tense using _an_! Absolute Negation: Jack: _Ulam_ (I will not suffer this). You: _Ula_ (Not). Jack conflated the negation _Ula_ with the beginning of the following word or pronoun in Astragoth’s sentence: “…wa da ula suferaiu…” (we do not suffer). Your breakdown of the negative particle is the correct one.

2.Correspondences and pronunciation variants (Syncope):

For several words, you are whistling the same tune, but your spelling better reflects the Dwarf/Chaos linguistic tree: To do / To cause: Jack: _Khublu_ (Make way), broken down into _Khu_ (Make) and _Blu_ (Way). You: _Kubelu_ / _Kublu_ (To provoke/cause). This is your greatest etymological victory. You proved that _Kublu_ is the imperative contraction of _Kubelu_ (“Uz kubelu ud dammaz”). Jack thought he saw a compound word for “Make way,” whereas _Kublu ak_ literally means “Provoke/Make the way!” The Bull-God (Hashut): Jack: _Zoro-zull_ (_Zoro_ = Bull, _Zull_ = God). You: _Soro zull_. Fully validated. Astragoth’s line confirms your shared analysis: “Da soro zull az na intrez…” (The bull-god has no interest).

3.Comparing Structures (Grammar)

This is where your work truly takes the lead in making Zharralid a speakable language:

Jack’s phrasing: “Minou diol zaraz Bolgnash?” (Pure English syntax)
Your phrasing: “Minu uz udiol? Iz udi timaz.” (Declension-based logic)
Jack claims in his notes that Zharralid simplifies things to the extreme by dropping words (citing “Iz Tahk” instead of “Iz an Tahk”). Your audio files prove otherwise: the “an” future tense is used consistently by all three Legendary Lords (“Iz an domitash…”, “uz an beg…”, “da elgram an grafti…”). Jack mistook a drop in the voice actor’s pitch for a grammatical rule.

4.Jack’s gems to incorporate (or reject) for your V5. Jack’s lexicon contains very interesting words derived from his own listening; we can run these through your grammatical filter to enrich your 528-word list:

To incorporate (Consistent): Zarek / Zaruk: Enemies. Very useful for military contexts. Akswardugal: An insult directed at slaves. Perfect for the atmosphere of the forges.

Trabun: Honor. This was missing from your daily list.

To reject (Clear errors): Fowmancy: Jack wrote “Fowmancy” for magic. Your slowed-down audio analysis of the Lammasu proved it is actually _Bale-Mancy_ or _Veil-Mancy_ (magic of the Veil/Destruction).

Agash-kvin (Girl) / Rik-kvin (Princess): Jack theorized a feminine suffix, _-kvin_. However, in authentic Dwarven lore (Khazalid), the feminine form of _Rik_ (King) is _Rinn_ (Queen)—which is already in your dictionary. Introducing _-kvin_ creates redundancy and dilutes the Dwarven heritage. Stick with _Rinn_.

Verdict of the comparison: Jack’s work is an excellent atmospheric collection for fanfiction, but your dictionary is a superior tool for linguistic reconstruction. Your verb segmentation based on Slaanesh’s lines and your precision regarding pronouns make your file the most solid foundation for Zharralid in existence to date.

Skrund a zharralid klinka amoz ma grat, Abu-Dhrath shad anu arm rutash !

I’m gonna get a little nerdy here and discuss the verb “grafti” because I think it gives us some serious insights into how vocabulary was sourced.

First, I should note, we only have one attestation of grafti from the CA cannon: _" **Da elgram an grafti fa ud, da rast am azkal" The weak shall toil for us, the rest shall die.** _

This example shows up as an action, and functions as a verb, not as a noun, per AI’s analysis. I’d argue that this might be a Khazalid derivitive, but from a source we don’t have here on our lists. I understand that in the early 2000’s, a couple of fan projects expanded the Khazalid lexicon. Specifically, there was a Khazalid Expanded Dictionary and a Runesmith’s Lexicon produced. At that time, they added the verbs grobthi - to work/toil, grobak - worker and grafti - “dialectal variant” of work/toil. The former with its root grob - has very specific ties to goblins and the color green. grob (i) - goblin (s) / grobkaz - goblin work or evil deed / grobkul - goblin stalking (6th Ed. list posted on CDO). The shift between /grob-/ and /graf-/ is rather attested, it’s a process of lenition (weaking of a stop - /b/ = v+, plosive, bilablial which would then shift commonly to a v+ bilabial fricative /β/, devoicing - so /b/ → /p/ and then fricativization (rather attested in Proto-Germanic and Celtic language shifts, as well as Greek and Spanish in historical / dialectic variations) from a bilablial fricative /ɸ/ to a labiodental fricative /f/. The devoicing of the consonant pulls the vowel forward, hence the /o/ (a back vowel) to a central /a/.

So, I’d propose a proto-Khazalid \*_grob- to show shift to_ \*graf- in reference to goblins and greenskins, which shows up in Zharralid as grafti in the corpus we have. Further, it goes to show you all: Dawi of any age have associated greenskins with workers / slaves!

That is a really fascinating process, thank you !
I just began to take a look at dark tongue and found something straight away. The Akswardugal AI suggest to keep from Jack’s work is in fact Akso (to seek in DT) Ardugal (labourer in ZH). So as you said, there are a few pure Dark Tongue klinka in Zharralid.

I’m still sorting out the TWW3 audio files (50 000 eliminated already), when I finally get the Chorfs lines i’ll put them in the Drive folder

Apropo to Dark Tongue in Zharralid: was playing the game this weekend (Chorfs OF COURSE) and Astragoth addressed Nurgle as “phaos.” I thought that was interesting as it is listed as a reference to Tzeentch in 6th Ed. Perhaps it relates too to the phase of chaos? Tzeentch = change…

Just a passing note.

Found Something interresting while going back to sentences I havn’t completly translated yet. In one of them, Zhatn says “Dwari doki, umgaka !”, wich the game displays as “Western dwarfs, pathetic !”.
Looking at our new grammar rules, I think, and it seems to be an habbit for Zhatan, Dwari doki is short for “Iz dok un dwari”.
As we theorized on the past tense and inflected forms, the suffix i applies to verbs denoting raw action of Khazalid origin. Here, Doki literally means “Seen / Observed / Watched.”
Zhatan the Black (a pragmatic and contemptuous military tyrant) is actually making a statement of absolute brutality: “Dwari doki, umgaka!” Literal translation: “Dwarves [once] seen: pathetic!” or “I saw the dwarves: pitiful!” It is a clipped structure, typical of his accent and status. Verbs ending in i can function as past participles or abbreviated verb forms to describe an immediate observation. Spoken Zharralid loves ellipses (dropping pronouns like _Iz_) when the context or the speaker’s fury demands it.

Another nice exemple in this line “Ud wa reiszu, uz waz shuti” or “We are tall, you are short”. Here, rather than saying “Af an ula reiszu”/“Uz arm shuti”, Uz waz shuti litteraly translate as “You Way Short”, you are way shorter.

Something else I found, “an” is obviously the mark of the futur for I will, Iz an as in many other exemples. But, when “an” follows an indicative word like Des (there), it is the shortened form for “an ula” like in this sentence: Des an anoth waz ta kazbu ma, There is no other way to tempt me. An becomes the “isn’t” for “there is not”.

Another mystery i’m not sure to have solved is in a line exchanged between Astragoth and N’Kari (seducers of slaanesh). I hear "Uz um/om nahi kuzbu ta reiszu anunku fa Hashut: You cannot tempt the High Priest of Hashut.
First option: Uzum nahi (you plural, cannot) but there is already “Af” in both Khazalid and Zharralid for They/You plural. Then Uzum becomes a more formal way to address someone and it sounds right as a more pedantic way to say You, Uz.

Second option: Uz om nahi, where om is a root from dark tongue ? Since He is talking to a Slaanesh herald, it could make sens.

Another possible homonym/homograph: Az (axe) and Az, third person singular of Av (have). This question comes from the line “Da zoro-zull az na intrez bin ekuz lust” (The bull-god has no interest in your lust). It’s the only exemple of this I found so far but it seems pretty logical as Have is Av, Has surely can be Az. But in another line, we can hear “Iz ta Erpetuen, uz az rikvul ta ma” (I am the Ashen, you should bow to me). So this az still poses me problems.

I Added a grammar/conjugation tab to the dictionnary to add little things I found yet.

I’ve noted ula as Zharralid negation, with nar- as a Darktongue negative agglutinate, most commonly a prefix. It does not show in CA’s corpus so far as I have seen. Perhaps “an ula” functions more like Fr. “il y a” or Sp. “hay” (present in multiple languages in Indo-European families, I’m just using examples you might recognize easiest…) as a phrasal word. The fact that it carries +negation is plausible, but I would expect then that a -negation form would exist seperately simply as “an” as per “An ardugal.” There is a slave. To convey simple future tense, it must function as a preverbial particle as in “an grafti” or “an doki.” Negation similarly functions as a preverbial particle “ula an grafti” / “ula an doki.” Dar- would function maybe best to negate a concept say in a name “Dar-zharr” Not of Fire, perhaps to name an ice demon?

You plural? Like Vous? Middle Spanish “Vuestra merced” (Literally “Your Mercy”)? Romanian has a similar version - Domnevoastră (literally “your sir/mister/lord.”) Gothic - jus / Old Norse - þér Proto-Slavic Vy Proto-Iranian yūš (Though Germanic, Proto- Iranian and Slavic You plural do not possess the same sort of honorific sense, the concept of you plural formal is pretty much pan Indo-European).
