[Archive] Prototyping Hobgoblins (3rd Two Years Later and Little Progress During That Update)

snowblizz:

So I come to that point all CD players face. How on earth to get/make Hobbos?

Lot’s of ideas around I know that but they seem to be buried in loads of posts all over the place and I can’t find them all it seems. Anyway, I’m at Home (note the capital) and heading back to uni tomorrow and need to think what components to bring along.

I bought a bunch of Flagellants recently and now I got a bunch Goblin components off a friend, mainly heads but also some torsos and stuff.

And suddenly I remember talk about using HE archer parts. They got those nice baggy “eastern pants” and all, and the torsos are about gobbo size. Is there any merit here, I’ve got a bunch left over I think. Nobody ever needed HE archers anyway.

I was thinking Marauders arms, HE body/legs and Goobo heads? The big problem I find is that I really do not know how large Hobbos are supposed to be. They are more “human sized” than Gobbos aren’t they?

jolpis:

yep they are about a humans length.

Grimstonefire:

Check out tjub’s blog, he’s used flagellants without alternate heads as ‘counts as’ slave hobgoblins. Would save a lot of work converting

tjub:

I’ve converted my own Hobgobbos from normal Gobbos and Greenstuff and used Flagelants as slave troops(count as Hobgobbos).

clam:

4th ed rulebook describes them as “taller than ordinary Goblins, though nowhere near as burly as Orcs” - so I guess human size is what you would aim for.

And you should check out Geckilian’s Blood Bowl team :hat off He used Flagelants as traditional hobgoblins - start here: http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/bloodbowl1.php

Tarrakk Blackhand:

I used BFSP Night Goblins, filed down the hats, extended a few in the middle and GS’ed their capes/ropes back. I also painted their skin yellow like the old Spider-man Hobgoblin character and changed out their spears for axes.

I’ve seen the combinations you describe and they’re awesome.

I guess Hobbo’s are left to interpretation as currently there are none on the market.

snowblizz:

Cheers for the ideas. I was thinking about maybe just using Flagellants as slaves as is. I found a bunch of Gnoblars on some Ogres sprues I have so I could make a mixed slave unit with those and other random bits I can find.

I was indeed thinking about Geckilian’s conversions. But using the 6th ed heads, forgot to get my friend to dig deeper and see if he had Night Gobbos as well. I know he has an army worth he doesn’t use since he decided to go old skool metal with them.

I’ll be knocking up a few test models with blue tack and post pics soon.

Hobgoblyn:

The best method is to just take your favorite human regiment without heads and then put Goblin heads on them.

Each regiment of Goblins gives you 40 heads to use.

I put mine on Brettonians since they have the closest look to Chinese style clothing, but any human regiment will work fine.

snowblizz:

Ok, got some prototypes.

The HE parts seem to be workign fairly well. Some fur (and a neck obviously.

I’m thinking about shaving off a mm or two and bulking the waist. Do Hobbos have “guts” I’ve seen quite a few figures with those or am I delusional?

Marauder arms work fairly well as well. Looks a lot like the goblin arm (the archer). The flagellant body seems to work better with dwarf or flagellant arms. Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

tjub:

I like the hobgobbo based on a flagelant best… The HE bodies seems a bit too fancy too me. But maybe with some GS they’ll work better…

clam:

Both concept could/would work - but as Tjub said you’ll need to do some GS conversion work on those elf-bodies - before the would look evil/sneaky. Straight out of the box they are way to clean and nice.

So fastest way is to use the Flagelant’s

snowblizz:

Something like this was what I was thinking.

Wider feet and better sculpting obviously. Its only bluetack mock-up yet. This uses a goblin body BTW.
I’m actually thinking of Flagellants for “naked” Hobs, the dummy drops and using the HE bodies as a base for “better” Hobbos. It should be possible and much easier to put some scale mail on the HE-hobbos.

Groznit Goregut:

I think it looks good! I’d like to see it painted up.

Hobgoblyn:

I have to totally disagree that you need to make them look like hunchback, thuggish neanderthals. That’s the concept that the Hobgoblins are absolutely nothing more than half-way points between Goblins and Orcs, something that defied all fluff about Hobgoblins before and after the Chaos Dwarf models were created.

The most recent models for Hobgoblins were Ghazzak Khan, Oglah Khan and the Wolf Boyz-- none of which had hunchbacks, none of which were utilizing crude clubs, stone-age axes and throwing rocks as weapons, none of which were barefoot and none of which had dull, blank, mindless expressions on their faces.

What you have above there looks more like deformed Viking berserkers rather than sneaky, backstabbing, cut-throat rogues.

Kera foehunter:

Snowblizz i think they need a little bigger beer belly !

they look like old guys with there pance pulled up to there chest

Hobgoblyn
I must say, AFAI can tell you are being contradictory. The flagellant version would be much closer to the thuggish neanderthal IMHO and barefoot to boot. Are you sure you're not putting too much stock into the horned head I happened to try on?

There's also the question whether Oglah khan et al are appropriate to showcase what hobbos under CD rule would look like. Except physically. I mean, they ARE slaves after all, heavily downtrodden. The Khna's boyz are wild and free. I can't find any pics anywhere, but all the hobbos I see have the typical GW hunched greenskin look. I'm not sure it would look right without the hunch. In fact I was worried they weren't looking nearly hunched enough.

I don't quite get the Viking part though. But I was thinking about a more regimented look, some splint mail etc. I'm rich enough to outfit my hobbos goood. What's the point of being a successful CD if you ain't showing off? ;P
@Kera, prototypes... if you look closely at the second set I tried to make an approximation in blue-tack of what I was thinking. Doesn't show well due to blue/white/grey though. I'd be brining the waist lower with green stuff.

Kera foehunter:

more lower!!! or use a belt to make it look more defined

i do love the little buggers!!

Indeed, that was my plan. As I said, this was only to bounce some ideas around. I'm still not sure the straight backed elfs is the best way. But I do like the "eastern clothing".

Kera foehunter:

hobgobiln in silk elf outfits !! you sure know how to treat your slaves

Kera foehunter
Indeed.
Its because I interrogated a few of your slaves I briefly had to give me some ideas (and I was bored), and they all complained that Kera stole their nice outfits.
Its my evil masterplan to steal all the slaves and collect them into large concrete structure, keeping them in a 100' deep vault where I'll swim in them, burrow through them like a mole, throw them into to the air and let them rain down on me. (Anyone able to tell where this all comes from :~)

I'm feeling Dwarfs like to show ostentatious wealth, sorta like rappers. Outfitting Hobgoblins is one way to do it.
