1987 Chaos Dwarf Renegades project - Pulper Spikehead

So, although I started my chorf journey being attracted to the 4th edition rule book and big-hat models, I have fallen hard (real hard) for the 1980s Citadel and Marauder chaos dwarf models. I’ve adjusted my lore to accommodate two large units of chaos dwarf warriors who are fresh across the mountains to join the legions of Hashut and are in search of their big hats so that I could have the excuse to start collecting the various ranges.

My eye was immediately drawn to the 1987 Renegades box, largely because of the amazing artwork by John Blanche.

I was lucky enough to bag a copy of this whole box set, with original shields, off of eBay recently, and I was giddy when they arrived, knowing that the Master of Madness would be my unit champion (and also a project for a painting competition).

So, I decided, after priming (and man did these models clean up and prime good!) that I really wanted to paint these in the same scheme as Blanche’s amazing cover-art, and that overall I really wanted both of these eventual units to have a rag-tag look to them (for they are not yet fully blessed by Hashut!). The Renegade sculpts (by the Perry Twins) have such awesome energy - if the model is in motion, you can really feel it in the stance, and if they are in rest you can sense their foreboding nature.

I chose Pulper Spikehead as my test model last night to make a start. I took a photo of the box art and blew it up big on my computer monitor and have used that as my reference:

Once I was happy with the weird green/gold armour scheme (chaos!) I then locked in and got it to near-finished stage last night. I might go back in and clean up a few details. What do you think?

Really nice paint job on this guy! Waiting for more to come.
But the base though - damn, oldschool

cheers!
yep, green bases! but I’ll be cleaning it up with some highlights…

this evening’s work was Mad Marik Trollbiter! Reckon I’ll do some freehand on the shield once I figure out what I want across this unit…

Honestly - this one went worse. From far he’s ok, but a closeup shows problems with the paintjob. I would try add some layers on the face.

fair criticism, and that’s why I’m posting them here. I’ll work on the face, and also consider the shield, too.

Right, two more done! Nipper Grundrim and Drum & Drone Ulsen. These two were a bit more obscured in Blanche’s artwork, so I’ve done a bit of interpretation. Let me know what you think!
