A question about war machine bases in TOW

Okay, so I know the rules state that War Machines are based now, I’m talking the static versions, not our awesome Thomas the Slaughterengine and his hanger-on’s. No, I mean our Earthshakers, Death Rockets and Bolt Throwers (or whatever fancy pancy names the young beardlings give them these days).

I used to play them with just a 40mm square base from 4th up to 8th edition, mostly to protect the paintjob on the wheels as they didn’t need basing. Then the age of the 9th Age came on, and I actually rebased to circular bases for easyness sake.

But as far as I read the rules, to me it doesn’t seem that there are advantages / disadvantages to rebasing to squares and rectangulars again (as I said, for the static ones, not the train wagons).

Is there from any play experience any point on that? I know I might eventually need to rebase one or two of each for any possible tournament I might not ever actually attend, but asking those that played our beloved Dawi’Zharr on a less casual level so far, does it really matter that much?

Or any other static war machine like a High Elf Bolt Thrower of Dwarf Cannon for that matter?

It matters for the enemy’s ability to charge, their shooting, and templates. For us there’s an impact on our line of sight, since we draw the line from our base. It’s slight, but in a tournament setting, I’d be sure to have the proper bases.

For the dreadquake/earthshaker, I keep it on a 60x100, as that was what the base was back in 8th, sans the steam carriage (with the steam carriage it was 60x200 :flushed:)

Hmmm, that might indeed be an issue. Maybe I should have some MDF “trays” cut out with a spacing to place the current base in then.

I mean you can always just put them on a simple piece of cardboard if needs be…

Yeah, but where is the shwing in that (bonus points for those so long-bearded to remember where that comes from)

Granted, there is none.
