Recently I have wondered about the fantasy archetype “the evil dwarf”. Where does it come from? We see them both in Warhammer, Warcraft, D&D, and a bunch of other places.
I wonder if anyone ever did a piece of writing about the history of this type of fantasy creature, like I know some have done with orcs.
Hi i dont know for sure, but id suspect like many things fantasy it comes from Tolkien…
In his middle earth stories the dwarves came from the east, there were seven houses originally, and four stayed behind.
Whilst he doesnt specify the outcomes of these houses, its very likely they fell to Sauron and became evil dwarves.
I suspect many readers came to the same conclusion and thus the idea of evil dwarves was considered.
