Allied regiment

Allies
Up to 25% of your army’s points value may be spent on a single
allied contingent drawn from one of the following Grand
Army composition lists:
• Warriors of Chaos

Now, obviously this opens up some nice tactical selection, but what would look the best with a Chorf army? I am thinking Chaos Giant as it opens up for the beautiful forgeworld Siege Giant models.

Any other takers?

I think another good addition would be chaos knights, hit like a train and gives some mobility if you are not fielding bull centaurs.

The allies rule says it must be a viable small army, including a general and at least 1 core unit.

Did you mean mercenaries?

Honestly I haven’t looked into it too deep, I was mostly curious as to what one can bring from the normal Chaos Army to make up for anything Chorfs might lack in rooster, such as chaos knights for example. I was just interested in some theorycrafting as to what could be helpful.

He makes the same interpretation as you though, regarding that the allied contigency is an army of it’s own with point and percentage rules.

In the Renegades (Square Based) list you can take a Chaos Giant in a rare slot or if you prefer a Bonegrinder Giant as a Mercenary choice. Otherwise with the current Allies rules you would need a fair bit of points to field a Chaos Giant along with warriors of chaos.

Yes, so a Rare unit taken as allies has to be less than a quarter of the allied force, which for a 200pt Giant would need to be at least 800pts. Since Allies themselves have to be less than a quarter of the total army, that’s a 3200pt army at minimum. You’d need a Rare Allies unit to be 125pts to fit into a 2k army.

No one has scoffed at the Renegades changes, so I think you’d be safe taking a giant as a regular Rare unit with most people.

I’ve considered using a Gigantic Spawn of Tzeentch (from the Warriors Arcane Journal) as a K’daai Destroyer proxy. It’s a big ball of flaming attacks. Again, it’s a Rare unit and 155pts, so you’d need a 2500pt army to include it.

2500pts battles are not uncommon so that seems doable, but anything about 3000 seems a bit more rare.

A chaos sorcerer wouldn’t be a bad addition either. But it’s all about the points.

The best choice of allies in a 2k list in no-comp environment is probably a lvl 4 sorcerer lord on a horse with spell familiar. Core 3x5 warhounds and 1x5 with either poison or armour (for 125pts exactly), lastly two lone shartaks with GW’s and heavy armour :+1:t3:

Seems reasonable. Good speed and power.

Some competitions do allow for allied regiments as well, so would you pick a different set for a comp-environment or what was your thought process here?

It’d entirely depend on the comp in question, of course - if possible, bring the above. The one time I brought allies to a tournament, the core was the same 125pts of dogs, but there was a limit of 33% on characters iirc, which made me field a cheap aspiring champion on horseback as the allied general, and a third shartak for the points left over.

I placed ok, and the shartaks were useful, but offering a 100vp bonus for killing the “second general” is not something I’d risk again. Had he been a wizard who could stay out of trouble, maybe, but not a close combat hero-tier character.

Has anyone already tried a mercenary regiment of Badlands Ogre Bulls with Iron Fists, Heavy Armour and the Spider Banner?

Often I see comps where there are no allies allowed but mercenaries are.

Keep in mind that your allied contingent technically has to be its own mini-army following many of the usual rules for list creations, meaning the Giant is only unlocked at a 3200pts Chaos Dwarf army.
You can find a unit-by-unit breakdown for allies and mercenaries in the Big Chaos Dwarf Tactics Compendium

Of note, Val’s Renegade Army List pack has the Giant included in the army list, you’re probably better off just using that army list. Discuss with your opponent first, though.
