Battle Report 28 June 3013
My first game with CD’s this year. 1500 pts V’s Ogres. I’d innocently led his informant (my son) into think I was taking O&G’s. So being faced with more serious firepower was a minor shock. The field of battle had a scattering of minor hills and a clump of trees roughly in the middle. His army was 5 scout ogres of some sort, 17 other ogres and a Tyrant.
and I fielded 2 x 5 Wolf Riders with spears and bows, 24 Stormcallers - Full Cmd with Sappara’s, Shields and the Razor Standard, 4 Bull Centaurs with Throwing Axes and Shields, a “Eruption Cannon equipped” Doomcannon, a Daemonsmith, a Despot with the Ogre Blade and Enchanted Shield and a Bull Centaur Elder with the Dawnstone.
To draw out some of his troops and maybe divine his plan I put down the usual wolf flankers to the middle of the left side of the field first to see what he’d do. That’s when he put down all 17 ogres as a horde. Now I know it is a minimum of 3 units but he was so excited about putting a horde out and I thought what the hell, it could only hurt. My next unit of wolves went down on the right flank and that’s when I learned the other 5 ogres were scouts. His Tyrant went into the horde making it a 6 x 3 block of meat. I then bunched the rest of my deployment to the right hand side of the board with the BC’s, Stormcallers and Doomcannon to the inside of the second wolf pack. I placed the centaur Elder back slightly to the left, just to frustrate the ogre scouts positioning themselves into the corner flank area. Lastly a suitably frustrated Jack put his scouts down on a small hill about 12" away from the right hand wolves and the eruption cannon.
CD’s Turn 1 - Luckily I rolled off better and got first the turn. The left hand wolves I moved across to the middle of the field. Next I swung the Stormcallers to give them a shot at the scouts and moved the right hand wolves a little wider out. The BC’s moved forward and to the right towards the scouts just for the threat value of being in charge range and the Elder I moved up to the left flank the Cannon and the Daemonsmith I marched out into the open field to get a clear line of sight. After a boosted Fireball, 5 arrows, 22 BB shots and a Magma Eruption shot there were still 2 Ogre scouts left, who unfortunately didn’t flee.
Ogre Turn 1 - Jack moved his “horde"unit up directly behind the cover of the centre copse of trees and decided to charge the 2 scouts into the wolves. My guess is He thought he’d easily KIA them and then draw more troops into the corner while his horde came up behind. Well they did easily kill the 5 wolves and he decided to stay put.
CD’s Turn 2 - Not overrunning was a mistake as it left them just that bit closer to my main troops and I got the charge onto them with the Bull Centaurs. The Stormcallers I moved back around to prepare to face the horde and I moved the Daemonsmith back across to the left and out a bit forward clearing a lane for the BC’s to return through later and give him a better line of sight at the horde. The BC’s finished off the 2 ogres for the loss of 1 wound but had been drawn dangerously away towards the edge in the final pursuit
Ogre Turn 2 - Now for some reason Jack charged his Ogre Horde at the remaining wolf pack who had drifted out to the left flank just to annoy him. I guess they were annoying and of course they safely fled away.
CD’s Turn 3 - Minor realignment of the stormcallers to give the cannon the possibility of a shot, also did the same for the Daemonsmith and reformed the BC’s. The left hand wolves keep fleeing with a 6 roll
Ogre Turn 3 - The Horde marched straight towards the Stormcallers
CD’s Turn 4 - The poor wolves kept fleeing and ended up 1” from the edge with a 7 roll. The boosted Fireball and 22 BB shots only KIA’d 2 ogres and the Eruption Cannon missed completely.
Ogre Turn 4 - Yep, you guessed it, He charged the Stormcallers. Stand and Shoot did for 2 more Ogres I think. The ensuing combat was a bit one sided with only one or two ogres falling and 19 CD’s getting axed. I fail to roll snake eyes and get easily run down. Only High-light was the Tyrant being challenged by my Despot (WS6, 8A @ Str6 v’s WS6, 6A @ Str6 respectively), He thought I was stupid but I took a wound off his Tyrant for none in return but then died fleeing.
CD’s Turn 5 - Having few options left to me, I reformed the BC’s into a line and brought them around to face off against the ogres and joined the Elder up to them. I then got the Daemonsmith closer to the action. The boosted Fireball and Eruption cannon did for 6 more ogres, Leaving 6 and the Tyrant remaining.
Ogre Turn 5 - He thought for a while that he might have been able to sneak out of battle by ducking past the Eruption Cannon but after measuring, the BC’s still had a clear line of sight, so he decided to do a quick reform into a 3 x 2 formation and turned to face the BC’s and then he sneakily moved his Tyrant out of the unit and neatly positioned off to the BC’s left flank.
CD’s Turn 6 - I would have loved to charge but if they had held I would have had the tyrant in my rear. So I moved the Daemonsmith up and joined him to the BC’s, a bare 1" away from the looming Tyrant. Am now pretty sure that this is when the Eruption cannon misfired for a turn and I also failed to do any damage to the 6 ogres with the Fireball. One good thing was that I got off the Cascading Cloak of Fire onto the 'Smith and the BC’s.
Ogre Turn 6 - Predictably he charged and again rolled a 10 for the Gut charge thingie. I think the BC’s may have taken a wound and I definitely know the Daemonsmith did take 1 as he got gut-rammed by the Tyrant. The Fire Cloak proved its worth by causing a few wounds. Thank God for “Make way” as I now challenged his Tyrant with the BC Elder and withdrew (pushed) the poor little Daemonsmith out of further harms way. Again he thought he had it made with his Tyrants 8 attacks but the Elder knocked him down another two pegs for the loss of none (luck of the dice I think). The other BC’s took out 2 more ogres for another single wound. This time they failed their leadership test and fled. Logical choice was pursue the Tyrant who failed to win that race and the remaining four ogres rolled twice as good as the tyrant and went clean of the board.
So a total massacre for the Dawi Zharr. and YEH!! I am no longer in the No-Wins-Brigade.
