[Archive] 2.4 k against demons

TheHoodedMan:

Hi there,
Im going to play against a hard demon force on Thursday. ETC rules, 25% restrictions still, 2400 pts. max.

What would you field?
My basic idea is to bring a lot of fire against regenerating nurgle beasts and plaguebearers and few units as I want close combat against them.

Sorcerer Prophet, preservation, earthing rod, enchanted shield, lore of hashut

castellan, bsb, mask of the furnace, luckstone, hw/shield
tauruk, dragonhelm, tricksters shard, dawnstone, gw
daemonsmith, scroll, charmed shield, lore of …guess it… fire

25 infernal guard, gw, smc, eternal flame banner
20 hobgobos bow
20 hobgobos add. hw

2 magma cannons
1 k`daii
3 bc renders, ms, gleaming pennant, gw
5 hobgobo wolf riders, spear, m

Plan is to rip him with the magmas and destroy the rest in close combat.
BCs go with the hero to destroy the khorne cannon. Could they challenge a great unclean one? Thats one of the biggest problems.
Or should I go with a death shrieker instead of the magma and try to field a second unit wolf riders?
Should I swap the gobos for fireglaives?

sam585:

Drop talisman of preservation from the prophet, give him endurance with the charmed shield.

Run the Tau’ruk solo, If he has double cannons, use the Tau’ruk to kill one while the centaurs kill the other. If only one cannon send the centaurs to deal with it.

Drop the mask of the furnace from the Castellan, give him preservation and the enchanted shield

Drop the charmed shield from the daemonsmith, switch him to death, don’t be so concerned with beasts of nurgle you already have 2 magma cannons, flaming banner, and Lore of Hashut. You already said you got nothing to deal with a Great Unclean one, at least with spirit leech you got something.

Drop a unit of hobos and get more Infernals, Blunderbuss is the way to go if you inclined to shoot them, if not just get more G,Weapon warriors.

Drop the wolfriders, add the points from the wolfriders to the points you get from changing up magic items and get a rocket.

Is a K’daii really optimal in this match up? Greatest strength of the K’daii is that he is pretty much immune to normal attacks and is str7 negating everyones armor. A Nurgle Daemon army has all magical attacks, everyone has a 5+ ward, and more or less all poison which means everything you send the K’daii into is a risky outcome. If you are tailoring your list to deal with them I would switch the K’daii and get either some hellcannons, or another block of infernal’s.

I have a battle report against Nurgle Demons a few threads down, it has a lot of fluff, but pictures and summary’s if you want to get some ideas.

TheHoodedMan:

Thank you, thats a lot of good thoughts. fx didnt think of the aspect that all of the daemons have magical attacks.
I put down the list as you proposed.
What I didnt like is that I couldnt find points for the earthing rod.
The list would be as follows:
prophet, lore of hashut, endurance, charmed shield
castellan, bsb, preservation, enchanted shield, hw/s
tauruk, dragonhelm, dawnstone, tricksters shard, armor, gw

daemonsmith, lore of death, scroll

20 guard, s+m, gw, flame banner

24 guard, m, blunderbuss

3 bc renders, m, gw

2 magma cannons

1 rocket launcher

1 hellcannon

What do you think of it and how to play it?

I`ve got to sleep over that and make a good choice.

And I will take a look at your battle report :-).

sam585:

I would drop the OTS from your Tau’ruk to get the earthing rod, I only play the Tau’ruk to counter the WoC Nurgle Demon Prince where you need to make them die as fast as possible and where you need to get the full potential of the few hits you get through the ws 9 -1 to hit. Against DoC the Tau’ruks targets change a lot and the DOC army does not really warrant the OTS, now yes everyone has a 5+ wardsave, but from my personal experience against DoC it is a none issue.

TheHoodedMan:

Hi there,
changed 1 blunderbuss for a standard at the BCs, what was very good at the end. Left the ots at the Tauruk.

edit: Demon player fielded 2 x pink horrors, about 30 plague bearers, plague bearer bsb, 3 x 1 nurgle beast, 1 gargoyles, 6 bloodletters on juggers, khorne hero on jugger, khorne cannon, greater demon of Tzeentch

The list (and I ;)) didnt perform very well. The demon player managed to attack the hellcannon with blood letters and a khorne hero in turn 2, the blunderbusses only got 12 shots off in the whole game and the s-p lost 2 power levels and spells in a miscast, the daemonsmith couldnt cast his spirit leech one time. One magma cannon had a malfunction in turn 3 and was destroyed.

The BCs (and hashuts blessing at the dice rolls) saved my day. In combo with the hellcannon who stood the first turn they destroyed the bloodletters on juggers and one unit pink horrors. The Tauruk killed the Khorne hero and finished off the Lord of Change in Turn6 against all chances.

So despite of a really bad game from my side I won with about 600 pts difference.

Nota bene:
- You can win with a gun line despite of playing bad.
- Never miss the standard on the BCs.
- Next time I would bring the Kdaii. The demons have not so much INI and will not kill him in one turn, so at least he will destroy one of the nurgle beast/ Plague bearer units before he leaves the mundane world :).

sam585:

If they are not throwing down massive amounts of poision then by all means K’daii, that deamons list you fought seemed… different and new :stuck_out_tongue: I am glad you won, and usually a lot of battles will go down like that so cant take it as all luck you did some things right for sure. Khans would have aided you immensely with chaffing the juggers, they really are a necessity in our lists, though I am unsure if you can fit them at your point level due to hero allowance. And additionally what was the str of the lord of change? Tau’ruk with that load out can deal with str6 monsters/characters effectively, but once it hits str7 it becomes a serious gamble.

TheHoodedMan:

different and new
Yes ;).

The lord of change had at least one improvement from that staff, so it was a hell of attacks with Str7. But he had already taken 3 wounds before from a magma shot and the infernals gw.
I didn`t think he could attack me through a gap but I didn`t want to argue. He decided to take the risk (chances were not bad) ...and lost. If he didn`t attack the tau`ruk it would probably have been a draw.
I didn`t expect the juggers otherwise I would have brought some chaff, but the BCs/Tau`ruk in the end dealt well with them because they could hit them from flank and rear.

edit: Plague bearers didn`t dare to fight after getting 2/3 casualties from shrieker/magma/magic
