[Archive] 2 WoC lists (2250)

Spawn:

Alright so my first list to ask your opinion on is the following:

Sorc lord- Spell fam, Tzeentch, lvl 4, Conjoined Hamonculus- 325

Sorc- Scroll x2- 115

Warriors x19- Shields, FC, MoS- 339

Warriors x19- Shields, FC- 334

MArauders x20- MoS- 85

Marauders x20- MoS- 85

Marauders x20- MoS- 85

Chosen x20- Nurgle, GW, FC, Favor- 485

Trolls x3- 135

Warshrine x2- 260

The basic tactic for this army is to get the infernal gateway with the sorc lord and hopefully (at least) poof one enemy unit on the table, and then the chosen and the warriors move in to mop up.

The unit of trolls shields the chosen as they advance, making sure to stay within the leadership bubble of the Sorc lord. They will take all the missile hits they can, hoping to gain 1-2 rolls on the EotG table a turn, making them a mighty foe indeed. For the first turn or two the warshrines will bless the trolls, granting them extra bonuses. After the trolls have either been wiped out or moved aside to allow the chosen into combat, the shrines will bless either the chosen or the warriors, depending on who needs it more.

The three units of marauders will advance in front of the warriors and besdie the trolls, basically acting as a very large meat shield. ideally, just as my army is getting within charge range the marauders should all be dead/fleeing. Hopefully right through the warrior units. I can count on my Ld 8 re-rollable panic on the unmarked warriors and chosen to allow me to charge in with all of my important units.

Now for list 2:

Lord- Rune sword, Rune shield- 310

Sorc- Scroll x2, Nurgle- 135

Warriors x19- Shields, FC- 354

Marauders x15- MoS- 61

Marauders x15- MoS- 61

Marauders x20- LA, FC, Shields, MoS- 145

Hounds x5- 30

Chosen x14- Nurgle, Shields, FC, Favor- 351

Trolls x4- 180

Trolls x4- 180

Trolls x4- 180

Warshrine x2- 260

This list has a few more options than the other list, and a better CC character. This is the list me and a couple of friends came up with after pondering for a little while (well pretty close)

Once again the trolls advance in front of the whole army, doing thier best to keep at least one model in range of the general for his oh so important LD9.

The hounds plop down in the very corner of the table and are forgotten. (contest/claim quadrant)

The marauders shield the chosen/Warriors right behind the trolls, acting as a second line of defense.

And the rest is pretty much straight forwards

You have nothing to counter war machines/massed shooting. The army is nice and large, but lacking in fast units, making it very difficult for you to dictate where combats happen. The battle line is very wide and it will be difficult to co-ordinate your units effectively.

I think it makes little sense to use slow units expressly to shield other slow units, when for the same points, you could have a load of expendable fast moving units that can actually neutralise threats and redirect incoming enemies. Also, one hill in your opponent's deployement zone and you won't be screening much, if at all.

Get a Disc for that Sorcerer Lord, you don't want him near the fighting, nor do you want a failed Ld8 Stupidity test from the Haemonculus to slow his accompanying unit down. Golden Eye of Tzeentch to stop him being shot. Infernal Gateway does not require LoS so he can hide behind some suitable terrain and cast away.
I can count on my Ld 8 re-rollable panic
No you can't :) At least I never can. Also you are vulnerable to terror-causing enemies, Ld8 is not that much better than a 50/50 and a 350 point unit of chaos warriors running off from terror or needing 6s to hit zombies due to fear is just not funny. I would recommend Mark of Slaanesh.

If you really want to go for an infantry army, I would say 2 units of Chaos Warriors/Chosen tanked up to the max and then plenty of horsemen, hounds and chariots to support them.
The basic tactic for this army is to get the infernal gateway with the sorc lord and hopefully (at least) poof one enemy unit on the table,
You have to first roll the spell (likely admittedly), meet the casting roll, then hope its a double 6 or that your opponent doesn't scroll it or use some other anti magic item, and then you have to roll an 11 or 12 for the strength. Its simply not reliable at all. The more dice you have to roll, the more can go wrong. I have played against several variants of the 'Gateway Spam' WoC tourny lists and I have yet to see an 11 or 12 (no doubt I'll get one in my next game:~). Its just not that good. At least take the Infernal Puppet somewhere, with that many dice flying around, you're going to miscast.

The second list is much better I think, although I would ask why you haven't chosen the monstrously good Chaos Knights? They are freaking awesomely good. I played Chaos Warriors for years and swear by them.

What are you using for your warshrines?

Spawn:

Well what i should have mentioned in my first post is that the first army int here is a for fun version of the one below it.

For my warshrines i am using a custom built model made from a 50mm base, harry the hammers display base, and random bits, and for the other i am using a chariot from my beasts army as a stand in. The chariot is a spawn converted to look like it is pulling a chariot that has mustated out of it’s back.

BOGGO:

I certainly favor the 2nd list. I think some things to consider would be: MOS is better served on the Warriors (rather than on marauders); ward save vs shooting banner on warriors helps a bunch; mount the lord on a barded steed; even if he starts with the warriors you have the option of charging out and whacking something; since the spellcaster is pretty much just a caddy you could afford to lose the MON; the troll king would boost those trolls up nicely (and only a hero slot).

The trolls and warshrines give you the potential for a really big pay off, but you are vulnerable to shooting/magic. You can’t afford to be march blocked, and the list does seem susceptible to that.

I’ve been tooling with my Warriors of Chaos list for the local summer tournaments, and like the list, but i think pursuing the “pray I get gateway off” tactic is folly (and kind of lame even if you pull it off).

speedygogo:

Your lists are fun and fluffy but I don’t think that either would be that effect on the tabletop. Lots of small units of mounted maruader horsemen marked with slaanesh and armed with flails is pretty much the most effective build IMO. They count as fast cav, move 18 inches, are immune to psychology but can flee from a charge and are str 5 on the change. Best of all a unit of 5 of them cost about 100 pts. Buy 6-7 unit of them and throw in whatever else you want and it will pretty much work.
