[Archive] 2000 points versus the new High Elves

Vogon:

I had my first game against the High Elves last night (and lost).

It was a 2000 points game, the BotWD was not in evidence and there were no special characters

He took

Prince on a sun dragon star lance and a magic shield of some sort.

Noble with dragon armour on a steed

10 Dragon Princes

A unit of 3 chariots

2 lion chariots

10 Ellyrian Reavers

30 Lothern Sea Guard

I had

Lvl4 Sorcerer Prophet (Lore of Hashut, mask of the furnace)

Lvl2 Daemonsmith (Lore of fire, dispel scroll)

Infernal Castellan (Black hammer, Talisman of endurance)

20 IG Full command

2 x 10 Fireglaves

3 Bull Centaurs fill command, Warbanner

Magma Cannon

3 Fireborn, manburner

Hobgoblin Wolf Raiders with bows.

I won?Tt go into too much detail (mostly because I can?Tt remember it all but although the elves won I don?Tt think that it was too one sided. Possibly helped by the lack of magic on their side.

The elves continue to be very fragile even things like the lion chariots got put down by the Fireglaves.

My biggest problem came (not surprisingly) from the Dragon Princes with the noble in Dragon armour. The 2+ save followed by a 5+ ward proved extremely resilient and I?Tm sure that the IG would not have hung about if it wasn?Tt for the Castellan with them. Once I?Td held the charge though they struggled to do any damage to the Dwarfs it was only really the charge from the Prince on the sun dragon that allowed him to continue to win combats. The Thunderstomp from the dragon did most of the damage, the basic attacks did surprisingly few wounds. I guess I was expecting more from the dragon but a Sun Dragon is comparatively weak.

The Castellan held his own for a whopping 10 turns of combat in a challenge against the noble. Between armour and ward saves over the course of those 10 rounds (even with the Black Hammer) only one wound was done to each character and they were still slugging it out at the end of the 6th turn despite the rest of the IG having died at the hands of the sun dragon and dragon princes.

At the end of the game He still had his Prince on dragon (Prince down to one wound dragon at full strength) Noble on one wound, 8 of his 10 Dragon Princes and 15 of his Seaguard.

I had both units of Fireglaves at full strength, and all three characters (though the Castellan was down to one wound)

With hindsight I?Tm not sure what I would?Tve done differently other than attack the dragon rather than the prince riding it. I think I would have had an easier time hurting the high toughness dragon than the virtually impenetrable armour of the Prince riding it. But it the heat of the game I just got fixated on the prince.

I do think that the challenge with the noble though it was round after round of trading blows and making saving throws ended up being my saving grace. I?Tm sure that if I hadn?Tt accepted he would?Tve got killed by the dragon in short order and my IG would?Tve fled.

The Magma Cannon and the K?TDaai Fireborn both died to a Lion Chariot that got the charge in. The Fireglaves were the real stars of the show for me though all the chariots and the Reavers were taken out to the loss of none of their number.

A great game and it was interesting to see how the new High Elves handle. The

Cheers
