I’m really torn on lists - which do you think  is better (generally).

I’m using ETC comp, unfortunately.

I need to know what is needed the most & what points am I wasting?

Do I need Hobgoblins, BC’s, 4 war machines, a Destroyer, Hellcannon etc?

Is your ETC list for a single player tournament, or a team tournament. That may have some impact depending on the role you want to play.

From my perspective for a really competitive list (and I may play CD at the ETC this year), I look at what are the most effective things in the list.

For me that has to be the Death Shrieker, Magma Cannon and Destroyer. So they all go in. For my 4th machine slot, I have gone the helcannon, probably point for point the Shrieker and Cannon are better, but I like having something in my back line that can also protect my other machines, and Helcannons can do that - although a Shrieker and BC combo can do something similar for roughly the same points, and even retain the shooting whilst doing the combat thing, which a helcannon can’t. Then I look at how I can maximise the benefit of those. There is option of helbound (probably not worth it) and daemonsmiths for re-rolls. Re-rolls are gold, so two daemonsmiths it is, who are specifically on warmachine hugging duty. As they are going to be stuck at the back with the warmachines, it makes sense to give these guys lores that can deal with warmachine hunters or are at a long distance. 2 fire would be good, but I would go fire and metal.

So now I am into characters. The things that most scares me are combat characters getting into lines, so my sorc prophet takes death magic. Against gunline armies, I can also move him forward and target their warmachines with this if needed. To round off the characters, take an obligatory BSB.

That is most of the army, and all of the army that I expect to be doing stuff. Core, up to you. I have 2 x 20 hobgobs with shield, and 2 x inf guard with shield. I can throw the 2 hobgob units away if I have to, and they can also deal with chaff. having 2 inf guard units gives me a backup option if my primary bunker gets hit by too much incoming fire. Plenty of other options for core though.

Method:

well in the current ETC comp you can have 3 of the following

Str 5 templates, lvl 4, destroyer, chalice of blood

I take one magma, a lvl 4 and donnie the destroyer for ETC comp.

You are reading the restriction wrong, it is

1. Max 3 out of Str. 5 shooting template, Kdai Destroyer; and

2. Either Chalice or Sorceror Prophet

Method:

sweet. That means my typical army can be played within ETC guide lines
