[Archive] 2500 Without Destroyer Looking for Advice

evil smurf:

Hey all, this is my first attempt at a list without a Destroyer. I was hoping to get the communities feedback.

I typically play in a store where the skill level of opponents is mixed from beginners to advanced. However when I play against newer players, the K’daai Destroyer gives them headaches and can be a drain on the overall amount of fun they have. They don’t know how to deal with it and monsters like it seem OP to them.

I’m looking to make a list without the Destroyer that’s balanced for all comers and fun to play against/with. The armies I see range across all the army books. If there is a lean towards specific armies, I see Lizardmen and Bretonians more than the others.

Here’s what I have to start with.

Lords
Sorcerer Prophet: Lvl 4 (Hashut or Metal) Enchanted Shield, Talisman of Preservation

Heroes
Dark Castellean: Mask and Ironcurse Icon, BSB

Daemonsmith: Lvl 1 (Fire or Death) Dispel Scroll

Hobgoblin Khan: Wolf, Light Armor, Shield, Spear

Bull Centaur Taur’ruk: Great Weapon, Blackshard Armor, Dragonhlem, The Other Tricksters Shard

Core
Infernal Guard (32): Full Command, Hailshot Blunderbuss, Lichebone Pennant

Special
Bull Centaur Renders (4): Full Command, Shields, Great Weapons

Bull Centaur Renders (3): Full Command, Shields, Great Weapons

Deathshrieker Rocket Launcher x2

Rare
Hobgoblin Wolf Riders (5): Musician, Spears, (I have points left for shields here but I would lose the Vanguard move.)

Hellcannon

The Sorcerer Prophet and the Dark Castellean go into the IG bunker and form the Anvil. I put Hailshot Blunderbusses on the unit for extra shooting and for stand and shoot charge reaction.

One unit of Bull Centaurs gets the Taur’ruk and acts as the hammer and the one without can screen or be a hammer as well. However I’ll most likely have to screen a flank with this unit for a couple of turns. I gave the Taur’ruk the OTS for beating on Bret Characters who seem to always make their 5+ Blessing. I could drop this and put the points elsewhere.

The Hellcannon will hold the other flank.

The Daemonsmith babysits the Deathshriekers and Hell Cannon.

The Khan and Wolf Riders, will be used to redirect or hunt warmachines/spellcasters

Some other thoughts I’ve had from reading here at the forums are I could drop the Taur’ruk all together and move my IG bunker down to 28. That would leave points to have 2 units of 4 BCR’s for my hammers sans the Taur’ruk, add in 10 IG with Fireglaives to sit with the warmachines. This would leave me with 60 points for maybe another Khan or something else.

That’s what I’ve been toying with and any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!

p.s. I’ve attached a couple photos (shot from my phone) of how the Boys from Azgorh are turning out on my worktable. They are heavily influenced by some glowy rune IG I saw online.

Yodrin:

Those IG look awesome!!! Great work!!

Xx9millxX:

IG do like nice … Cool paint job … Love the “glowing hot” weapons

Bloodbeard:

The great thing about our grunts is they do well in close combat - and they are hard do grind down.

I think the blunderbuss upgrade is very expensive - but it’s quite fun.

Some ideas and humble advice:

Never ever leave home without a BSB. And even more so when you put so many points into an anvil. I know they are stubborn - but that 11 roll comes more often than it should.

The Tuar’ruk is just awesome. He breaks everything he touches. Both bringing him and using the point differently is good choices. But he has so much baddass factor I really like him.

Cool you’re gonna play without destroyer. Thumbs up for more tactical and fun games.

Two units of BC and wolfraiders will bring a lot of speed that’ll surprise many players.

And the painting is great. Those shields look like the come from the background of the tamurkan book. And the runes blend in really well. Good job!

evil smurf:

Thanks for the feedback!

You are correct about having a BSB, I never leave home without one. The Dark Castellean is a BSB and I forgot to put that in the original post. Thanks for catching that. I’ll have to edit it so as not to confuse others.

So you think the Taur’ruk is the way to go? I haven’t used him yet. If so is there a better way to kit him out. The way I have him now I figured I could use him for challenges against high armor save/ward save characters like Bret Lords who get the Ladies blessing. I usually see them at 1+/4++ or 5++

Another question I had was I usually run 1 Deathshrieker and 1 Magma Cannon. I switched to 2 Deathshriekers because I thought I’d need at least 2 shots a turn at S8 to deal with the Lizardmen Stegadons, Ancient Stegadons and Carnasaurs and other monsters. I like the balance of of having one of each, it’s nice to have as many different tools in your toolbox. Any thoughts on that?

One quick rules question. If I put a Khan on a wolf does he get a Vanguard move? If so what happens when I put light armor and magic shield or magic armor and regular shield? Does he still get a Vanguard move because of the magical nature of the armor components not negating the fast cavalry rule? I get confused by this. It would be nice to get 1 or 2 Khans in my opponents backfield set up for a charge on turn 2.

As far as the mini’s go, I appreciate the compliments. I was using the pictures in the book as my color reference. The armor paints up really fast now that I have figured out the colors. It’s actually a base coat, Some quick glazes, some dry brushing/stippling followed by an oil pin wash to pop out the rivets and recesses. The longest part is edging the weapons once I hit them with the airbrush.

?"Bloodbeard, I just clicked through your blog, that’s some sweet conversion work!

Bloodbeard:

A taur’ruk with blackshard, dragon helm and dawnstone is really funny. 1+ with re-rolls and T5. He’ll stay in a fight for a long time - without getting too expensive.

But all the extra troops you can buy for his price is an equally good choice i think.

The magma cannon is a beast. I have way better experience with that over the deathshrieker. The magma cannon is a sure hit every time - just put 6 inches in front of a unit.

evil smurf:

Magma Cannons are nice. I usually put my template just under 2" away, because even with a 10" move it catches most of the unit I’m aiming at. If I roll a 2, I still get the front rank. If there is a better way of doing it, let me know.

I would use the 2nd Death Shrieker for monster killing primarily. I do see up to 3 monsters for some of the armies I face. If the other army doesn’t have monsters I could drop templates on my enemy’s head. Is the Taur’ruk tough enough to deal with High Toughness (over 5) Monsters by himself? If he is I could go back to one Death Shrieker and one Magma Cannon.

Yodrin:

My experiance with the Taur’ruk, is that he is a stayer, but not a monster killer, though he has S7 with GW witch I always use on him. I use the stubborn crown on him btw;)

Yodrin:

Oh, and I put the magma cannon template 1" away, hits every time if its not a misfire;)

Thanks!

Good to know.

Time of Madness:

Solid looking list. I actually like it.

Don’t put shields on the wolf riders and as Yodrin pointed out you should have the stubborn crown on the Taur’ruk. You can still put the dragonhelm on him as well for the 1+ save.

Time of Madness

Wolf :

If your coming up against lots monster cav or just larger monsters. Then I would consider the Iron Daemon, the gun on that thing shreds them all.

Plus if you hellboundit, if your facing another CD player you can kill the Destroyer pretty fast. Please don’t get the skull cracker it’s not worth the paper it’s written on plus you lose the gun.

evil smurf:

I played this list for the first time yesterday. The only real change I made was to the Taur’ruk. I gave him the Crown of Command, as suggested, instead of the Other Tricksters Shard. I made a couple other tweaks to get it under the point total like dropping the Lichebone standard, etc.

I really like the flexibility it gives me. I did roll really lucky for my armor saves and my two Deathshriekers (rolled a hit every time, this includes the Daemonsmith re-roll) that, coupled with my opponents poor rolling made for a short game.

I faced off against a Lizardmen army that had 3 Ancient Stegadons and Lord mounted on a Carnosaur. I did make some mistakes like running my Kahn and Wolf Riders to close to a Steggy that had the Blowpipes. I had never seen that before so that came as a shocker. But as I mentioned earlier, even with 21 shots from the blow pipes he only killed 3 of the 5 Wolf Riders.

Going forward I was considering dropping the Hellcannon but if I did i’m not sure what to swap it with. Any thoughts on that or should I keep the Hellcannon?

Thanks!

Hi Evil Smurf

I absolutely love your chaos dwarfs.

Is there any chance of putting up a step by step of how you painted them? I would love a video but i dont want to be too cheeky in asking :stuck_out_tongue:
