Well, as I’m building up my force, I decided I should have an end goal. Here is my first crack at a 3000 point list for the Dawi Zharr. I think it will be balanced, with a strong ranged element from the war machines and still some decent combat capabilities (not enough to shred warriors of khorne or the like, but hopefully warriors of khorne should be soft enough when combat reaches them!)
So, here is my first shot at a big army!
Damekker the Bleak
Chaos Dwarf Lord
Great Taurus
Ogre Blade, Talisman of Preservation, Dragonhelm
Heavy Armor, Shield
454
-Hefty, with a 2+/4+, and 8 S6 attacks from him and the taurus (plus thunderstomp). I’m considering swapping gear around to give him the crown of command and make him a nice stubborn beast the opponent has to deal with, but I feel like Ld 10 and the damage potential this guy has should be enough to do some serious damage on the flanks or rear.
Gushrakk the Paranoid (General)
Sorcerer Lord
Level 4 (Lore of Shadows)
Channeling Rod
240
-My general. Light on gear, since Mages can still be powerful without a ton of gear.
Gorgorakh the Stoic
Hero - BSB
Armor of Gazrakh, Sword of Might
135
-Fairly standard setup. Tough and mean BSB.
Gragakk Flatnose
Sorcerer (Lore of Fire)
Level 2
100
-Cheap firebase. Considering changing his lore to metal.
Zinibadd the Favored
Hobgoblin Hero
Great Weapon, Heavy Armor
48
-This guy is for “bait and switch”. He will always be near my general, but not in the same unit, so if need be my general can cast a nice spell, and use the smoke and mirrors attribute to swap places with him.
24 Chaos Dwarf Warriors
Full command
246
-Led by the BSB
20 Blunderbussers
Full command
270
20 Blunderbussers
Full command
270
-I like these guys a lot! Hard hitting and loud. My general and the other sorcerer most likely will be in these units, but it all depends on how setup looks. They might be better elsewhere.
40 Hobgoblins
Shields
Musician
130
40 Hobgoblins
Shields
Musician
130
-Yay for the sacrificial hobs. I gave them shields for the frustrating 6+ WS in CC. Considering dropping shields and adding another block of 40, but monetary restrictions will see me using only so many without significant evidence for why I should use more. Musicians will help the units move from horde formation to deep formation, depending on the circumstance.
20 Black Orcs
Full command, shields
318
-An extra block to cause some damage on a flank, likely supporting the general’s block. Mercenaries are good for something after all!
2 Death Rockets
160
2 Bolt Throwers
60
2 Earthshakers
220
-The full artillery compliment! :hat off 4 Stone throwers (2 with slowdown) and 2 BTs give me a nice bit of firepower, and two earthshaker effects force the opponent to either advance everything slowly or bite the bullet and advance out of formation. Or they could just let me get more blunderbusses into position!
5 Bull Centaurs
Additional Hand Weapon, Heavy Armor
105
5 Bull Centaurs
Additional Hand Weapon, Heavy Armor
105
-Two small units for flanking operations. These guys are to act on the flanks and hit the flanks of units my other dwarfs are fighting.
2991 points!
Well, 9 points leftover, which I suppose could see giving a cheap item to a character (maybe the ironcurse amulet to the general?). Any feedback on the list would be appreciated. It’s a case of asking you all to let me know what I’m doing wrong. I think it’ll work well, and best of all, can play in all four phases of the game- and quite strongly in some of them!
that a good solid list mate the bull centaurs with 3 attacks are great for the mindrazor spell and casting the drop I WS BS and movement spell in combo if they get to go first and are usesing ld as strength they can be very choppy
i also like the little smoke and mirrors hero you have to bail your mage out of trouble i have dome the same in my list
twin earthshakers useing the ravenging hordes list is a touch cheesey but every army has something cheesey in it and im sure your playing to win right
Well, I’m certainly not WAAC, but being fairly competitive is nice. I don’t want to be cheesy, but my main opponent uses a Star Dragon every game, and I also face some nasty tricks. When I was building the list I was more thinking about how to showcase the Dawi Zharr than make a cheesy list. This list actually is meant to represent the fluff of my army more than much else.
If it is effective though, I suppose that’s a nice added bonus
Not quite. Only one will get hit by the big S9 multi-wound, the other will just take a S3 hit. Unfortunate change since 8th Ed, but its in there. Even when two things are under the center, only one is hit. Still a good method to take out that Dragon, but I will likely be forced to use indirect fire with at least one shot per turn (if I use them all on the same target - my opponent is pretty dang good at this, too). Also I need to fire three stone throwers at it to get a reliable hit, which then might not even hit the Dragon. If it does and I miraculously roll 6 wounds, the Lord shrugs off the S3 and rushes to join a nearby unit. If not, the ward save shrugs off the S9 half the time (you bet there is going to be a talisman of preservation or the like on top of dragon armor there) on the lord and then they’re within 12" pretty quick (once they figure it out after a couple games) so no more Earthshakers firing, or high risk scattering on my own units. You can still bet that I will be using these to soften up a Star Dragon, but I’m not expecting it to just do the job for me. Bolt Throwers aren’t the most accurate, and only a 50/50 chance of wounding. Still, my artillery should weaken it significantly, but its not a guaranteed dead dragon turn one.
Also, the Earthshaker slowdown doesn’t affect flyers (if I’m reading this right) since flyers don’t use their movement, but use the “Fly” special rule instead. Need confirmation on that one though.
This is a very good looking list to me , it seems to have all the bases covered , but as always the only way to test it is to play a game and see how it handles
She (My main foe is my fiancee! ) likes to take a 3 dragon list for fun (Star Dragon, 2 Dragon Mages) which uses RBTs and archers for support, plus a block of White Lions, block of Sea Guard, and a couple units of silver helms. I’m forgetting elements of the list, but she fine tunes it often anyways, so it could be a bit different now. I don’t remember if there were Dragon Princes or not. I just remembered learning the hard way that the Shaggoth sucks
However, model limitation (if you call 3 dragons limited…) is becoming less of a problem. She now has the start of a Pheonix Guard Unit as well as 20 or so Swordmasters. She has more models due to Island of Blood, and is trying to add some of the elements of that to her current force.
I suppose I am being pessimistic with my war machine kill potential, but that’s the way I plan. I figure if you plan pessimistically, you’ll have your bases covered when things go wrong. If things go right, units will have even greater support than originally intended!
Now that I think about it, my regular Dwarfs have taken down many a dragon, and are (in)famous in my club for taking out my opponents Black Dragon and 2 Hydras in two turns using my Anvil List in 7th ed. Actually, my Dwarfs are just infamous in my local club in general, where they still hold the top record. To the point where my local Dark Elf player kept complaining about how cheesy Dwarfs were in 7th Ed (I didn’t even run a gunline, and he was taking Hydras at 1k points!).
I guess I will just have to run this list at some point (proxied for now… My Dawi Zharr are still being made) and see how it is. Sadly, no games shall be played until either late January or early February. Club on hiatus for the break, and my fiancee is in Hawaii with family right now.
You know, you could recrute some dogs of war canon to hunt your fiancee flying lezards, only 85pts each ^^
I think that the basic spell from the lore of death can slay a dragon, witch have poor command stat… And soul drinker that put -1T en S for every ennemy in 24ps would be very nice to deal with those monstrous foes…
Actually, a Star Dragon has Ld 9! Not exactly poor leadership. It does have only 2 initiative, which makes a couple lore of shadows spells nasty. Also Shadows can decrease a few stats as well, and allows me my bait and switch tactic ;). Basically, Death would be better against sun dragons, shadows vs star dragons. I’ll take the anti-star dragon lore!
I could go the Dogs of War route, but I want to showcase the unique Chaos Dwarf list. As such, I’m not going to add in DoW units just yet. Also, club policy disallows DoW in our tourneys, so I’m going to try ad stay away from them.
I suggest you take the dark gem of gnar: if a dragon charge, you can move your character in contact and activate the gem to forbid him to strike. Then you will win the fight thanks to your ranks and banner!
That’s… A great idea… I’m kind of wondering why it didn’t occur to me to give it to my sorcerer lord, as he can have a turn of total protection and the swap out for the hobgoblin hero with any spell.
Hmm… It’s something to consider at least, but I’d have to drop something for it. Any ideas what to drop?
