[Archive] [9th Age] 9th Age Undying Dynasties Preview of Miniature Releases

Admiral:

As seen here. Including a multi-part Pharaoh:

Undead Roman Legionnaires:

And Undead Equites!

We know they have more Egyptian Undead stuff planned, so it’s great to see the Romans get some fantasy love. That was always something I felt was lacking in Warhammer, and now the community corrects it. :cheers

Dînadan:

Iirc there were Romans in Fantasy - one or two of the Dogs of War pikemen units wore Lorca segmentata armour, and one of the Tilean city States was named Remus. It’s just that they weren’t very visible because GW didn’t really bother to explore Tilea in any depth.

Admiral:

Yes, that’s all there were of Romans in WHFB previously. Plus a Julius Caesar reference in Albion, Graeco-Roman influences in High Elves and armour styles in Slaaneshi warriors. It was never more realized than that. Now, the community takes it all the way, as long as it deserves to go. Just as with the Terracotta army miniatures.

This is glorious. :cheers

Dînadan:

To be honest, I think it’d have been better to develop the Tilean city states to develop Romans in the Warhammer World, be it as ‘present day’ Tilea or as an exploration of Tilea’s past rather than tagging them on to Tomb Kings.

But as a non-Warhammer project I think it has merit and would work as a generic undead in a generic fantasy world (eg as forces using the Dragon Rampant or Armies of Acrana rule sets).

Actually, thinking about it, they might actually have a place in the Warhammer world, but not as To,b Kings - in the ranks of the Vampire Counts. Thinking about it I can actually see these marching in the ranks of the army of a Tilean based Vampire or Necromancer being raised from catacombs deep below Remus or one of the other states, or even from a forgotten battlefield grave out in the Border Princes.

Admiral:

I’d also have preferred living Romans (me and my brother have some serious army collecting plans along those lines, but Victrix have to release lorica segmentata Legionnaires first…).

But all living things die, especially in battle. So Undead Romans do not exclude living ones running around, no less than Undead Night Goblins exclude living ones. And Vampire Counts might be a better home for them, yes.

Pyro Stick:

Not a fan of the roman stuff at all, i dont think they work with the range, but already ordered the pharaoh and heirophant to show my support. The ushabti concept art looks excellent as well. Im really looking forward to the kickstarter. I think the models are a bit on the expensive side right now, as is postage, so i hope they can sort all that out before the kickstarter.

Firehammer:

1.) Link in first post is not working, access denied.

2.) The Russian company Zvezda once made 28mm undead Romans in Plastic under the name “Cursed Legion”, not sure if anyone still sells them:
6mm-Minis: MINI WARGAMING: "28mm Undead Roman Legions On the March!" (3 November 2007)

Admiral:

Ah, one needs to be a member of the 9th Age site to access it apparently. Zvezda’s Undead Romans are way closer to ideal where infantry is concerned. Thanks for the tip! The 9th Age equites sculpt is still a nice piece of work.

cornixt:

I thought 9th Age was just a collection of fans getting rules sorted out, I had no idea they were now a miniatures company. Hope they keep all the rules free and online.

Personally, I think it is a mistake to add new armies when there hasn’t even been a full year of solid playtesting of a single set of rules.

Admiral:

9th Age is a fan/community project, primarily aimed at getting out the final answer to WHFB rules, but also producing artwork and background writing for a Warhammerish world. Naturally, some enthusiasts in the crowd would pick up the opportunity to sculpt new models under the creative umbrella of 9th Age, though the producers of said miniatures would of course be legally and financially responsible on their own, without any legal or monetary connection to the 9th Age team. No rules will be pay-to-play.

As for new armies: Undead Romans would supposedly be a simple add-on to Vampire Counts or Tomb Kings, proxies as it were, and good thing they get released. Maybe with some army-wide purchasable special rules as per the terracotta army for TK. As for miniatures, the sculptors simply sculpt what they want, and what people demand, such as new Tomb Kings. The emergence of 9th Age has resulted in a hotbed of Warhammer community creativity proving productive already in its early stages.

As for rules, the 9th Age team will wait with attempting any new armies, such as Nippon, until the core army books have been fleshed out and works as far as I understand it.

Dînadan:

Just taken a look at the Ninth Age Undying Dynasties PDF, and it looks like the undead Romans aren’t intended to be something that’s been shoehorned into the undead Egyptian theme; the book contains two variant lists as alternatives. The standard list is the Tomb Kings analogue, but there’s also the option to field a Terracotta Army army or a Barrows army, each with its own tweaks to the main list to make it fit the theme better (eg TA become tougher and are all constructs, Barrows all get heavy armour, both have point changes to reflect these and both have different max unit sizes for some units to the main list). Presumably the Undead Romans are intended to be more for the Barrows variant than the standard Egytian list.

Pyro Stick:

Heres the new website, still being built:

http://tabletop-miniatures-solutions.com/

I think those guys were made with Barrow Legion lists in mind so there will be more Egyptian themed stuff coming later in the kickstarter. At those prices though i dont think high quality resin is the way to go for core units.

Pyro Stick:

Indiegogo campaign is now live. Artwork looks excellent but i was hoping they would have more sculpts or even some WIPs to show off:
