As some of you will notice, I am new here but I have been gaming for a number of years. My order of Chaos Dwarf models should be arriving this week so I have been studying the army list and rules in preparation. I have two questions which may have simple answers and hopefully some one here can help.
The first concerns the Deathshrieker. I have to say it’s shooting rules are rather long and complex. My question is how a hit on a character in a unit from a Demoltion Rocket is handled. My confusion comes from the fact that it uses a marker to fire. According to the rulebook, characters in a unit (of more than 5 models) can not be targeted by shooting that uses a models BS stat. Also if they are hit by a template weapon, they get to make a “look out sir” roll. However, the Demolition Rocket is neither of these; a BS or template attack. It is specifically stated that it inflicts a hit on the model (not unit) that it lands on. Does this mean it is possible to snipe characters in units? It seems odd…
My second query is about using Chaos Dwarfs in a WoC army. I like to field fully painted models and so will probably start using my CD’s in this way. The rules for it say that one unit of infernals may be included as a special choice for each CD character. Does this mean only Infernal Guard or does it include Infernal Ironsworn? Additionally, some war machines can be taken as rare choices. Are these limited in anway (other than points)? Or could I for example take a Daemonsmith and two Magma Cannons? Only the Infernals are described as being limited to one unit per character…
Well, thanks for any help that comes along. I look forward to posting more once I get my models and start playing games.
Not an expert but not using the BS I always used the rocket like a template weapon, if it lands on top of a Character he has the look out sir rule. If he fails… get a rocket in da face
Once you’ve determined exactly what the Deathshrieker does with its shot (and you’re right, it is complex…), the normal procedures for template weapons should be followed, so a character hit by it would still get his “Look Out, Sir!” roll. It would come under the category of “Unusual Shooting Attacks” described on page 99 of the Warhammer Rulebook.
WoC only have access to basic Infernal Guard, not Infernal Ironsworn. Even though they share a bestiary entry for some reason, they’re two different units - you could no more include Ironsworn than you could Bull Centaur Renders!
The war machines aren’t limited beyond the usual Special/Rare slots, points and the necessity to include at least one character with the Daemonsmith special rule, as far as I can see.
I agree with what you say Tommy. I think the character should get a “Look out sir”. It is strange in that the Demolition Rocket is not a template. A regular shot from the Deathshrieker is, but the Demolition rocket just hits the model under the marker. Unfortunately the rule on page99 for unusual shooting attacks includes the phrase “specifically, shooting attacks that use some form of template…” I guess the marker will just have to be treated as a special kind of template. I think it’s a case of some loose rule writing and I can well imagine some people thinking the character would simply be hit directly.
I didn’t expect to be allowed to use Ironsworn with WoC. It seems like the rules in the book were written, but not gone through again and tidied up. Why couldn’t they have just written Infernal Guard instead of Infernals? It looks like a carry over from an earlier ruleset where there was only one type of Infernals unit. I think it is similar to the Darkforged weapons being described as used by Daemonsmiths but only the Sorceror Prophets having them.
Oh sorry, I missed your secondary question about the demolition rockets. Yeah, I think it still counts as a template, albeit a small one of unspecified size.
The rules refer to all shots from a Deathshrieker Rocket as a template attack. When firing the single ST8 shot, consider it to be an infinitely small template.
The Good News - Stegadons, mounted Dragons, and other similar stuff will HATE it.
The Bad New - characters get a Look Out, Sir! roll.
