Fuggit Khan:

I have no idea how they would have looked, so I've gone with rusted steel (would they be painted? I know modern ones are) which I think looks ok. What do you think? Is it any good, will it fit the setting?

Neil
I've seen quite a few of these old oil pumps scattered about in the southwest, and you've nailed it, that is exactly how they look. Nicely done :hat off
In fact that model would make for some interesting Chaos dwarf scenery too, add some chaos arrow and skull designs, and instant Dawi Zharr oil (lava?) pumping station in the Darklands :cheers

Abecedar:

The pump looks great.

A thought for you. I don’t know if you have a “K-Mart” in england but you are bound to have a similar place.

In the toy section (at ours) I have seen a packet of soldiers and western figures. One of the packs had some western like buildings that didn’t look too bad, and they would be cheaper than most stuff

Admiral:

Yep, that pump is great, and as Fuggit said a similar contraption would make a great piece of CD scenery.

cornixt:

Isn’t it missing the bit that goes into the ground?

Neil:

Isn't it missing the bit that goes into the ground?

cornixt
Yes, I think you're right. But I think that's just a cable going into the ground from the left hand side, so I'm not going to worry about that.

Ok, so  I painted the other Perry's cabin.

The photography isn't brill, the contrasts between the colours don't look as strong in the flesh (or at least I don't think they do). I've shamelessly stolen the sign method from a thread I saw on the Leadadventure forum and I think it works a treat.

If I'm honest this building and the other Perry's ones are a little on the small side (They are fairly clear 25mm, whereas I've gone with all Black Scorpion models) but they will do for now. Maybe if I make good headway they can be replaced at some point, but that is likely to be a few years away for now.

Next on the list is the TT Combat Moonshine Distillery, this has the opposite problem, in that it's a little on the large size (aimed at Malifaux I guess?). I've got other bits and guys to crack on with too. I think next on the list will be the Sarissa blacksmiths, I'm also planning on going to the Hammerhead show in March so I'll see what I can pick up there too. I've got my eye on other things (spent a good part of the day looking at the Grand Manner site which I'd never seen before - they have some nice stuff on there, but it's not cheap  :( )

In the meantime I have a question about gaming mats. Firstly size. I'll be playing DMH which specifies 3x3ft, but I was thinking 4x4ft would be better.
I was also thinking of this one - http://www.deepcutstudios.com/product/wargames-terrain-mat-steppe/ mainly because I like their Frostgrave one and I could buy two at once. Does the background image suit? Can anyone suggest a better one. Also what material should I go for? I like the idea of mouse-mat, but it's the most expensive option. My worry is the thinner ones won't lie flat. Does anyone have any experience with mats made of other materials - is this likely to be a problem?

Thanks.  :)

Willmark:

I will continue to keep following this blog with great interest.

Old West is near and dear to my heart and this is a great start. Have you looked at any of the minis at http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/old-west/ I ask because I’ve got my eye on a LOT of these after my Nippon army.

Malorndk:

First time reading. Looks stunning. Very nice terrain and minis. Great feel and great painting

Neil:

Right, got a bit of a bumper update. The missus has been working away again, so I’ve set about using my extra spare time wisely (I’ll do a bumper chore night the day before she gets back to get everything ship shape again) to make some progress with the painting.

So without further ado, here are some more of the residents. This takes me up to 20 painted guys now, so finally enough for a decent game - (it’s taken about a year :o :frowning: to get this far!). For a chance the photos aren’t too bad either, so if anyone has any suggests for improving the painting, feel free to say.

I also finished building number 4. It’s the TT Combat moonshine distillery. I’ve left off the massive crates and barrels though, as they just didn’t seem to fit. I think I’d describe this as solid but uninspiring. I might add a sign at some point, but for the minute I don’t think a town with only 4 houses would support that many businesses. The roof is detachable, which is great, but I’ve found that as this is scaled at the 30mm end of things, it does jar a little when sat next to the Perry’s buildings which are more true 25mm. I might have to ditch something here at some point in the future, but for the moment, beggars can’t be choosers.

Neil:

My Stronghold Terrain old shed arrived as well. I’m really please with this, both the model and the paint job. It’s such a characterful model which will fit into all kinds of settings. The roof is fixed on, but I don’t think that matters.

Once I’d finished this i did lay everything out to see how it looks, and it actually looked ok, kind of like a fledgling settlement, which was a nice surprise.

I went to the Hammerhead show yesterday, as it’s nice and local. I was specifically looking for more buildings for my town. I spent the majority of my budget on a figure case and some bargainaceous 7th Voyage rule books, but I did pick up the Sarissa blacksmiths and a Timeline Miniatures outbuilding. I also bought a 4ground windmill as I wanted to see for myself what the pre-painted stuff was like. I’m actually quite impressed and might pick up a few more of their products in the future.

Willmark:

Rex, Duke, Doc and Hank are my favorites out of the minis, very well done and very characterful; particularly Hank.

Great buildings also. All around great stuff.

Neil:

Right, it’s been a while without an update, but I have finally done some stuff.

First up is a little mdf shed/out builiding I picked up from Hammerhead. It doesn’t open, but it was £4 so I can’t really complain. I’m pleased with how it’s turned out, although I wonder if it is a little clean looking? I’m a bit hestitant to try weathering it, as it’s not something I’m that good at, and I’m worried it won’t look very good afterwards.

I also bought the Sarissa Blacksmith. I think this is a pretty cool kit and I’m pretty happy with how it looks too. It’s a fairly generic piece so I’m sure it will see use in other games as well. I did wonder if I’d messed up the sign by adding too much sepia wash when trying to mute the white of the paper, but it doesn’t look too bad in the photos.

I’m thinking my use of generic buildings might be diluting the old west feel of my fledgling town a bit, so I think I’ll probably get some of the small Sarissa old west buildings next to try and bring this back a bit.

As always any comments are gratefully received.

Miasma:

I’m moving that this is still going and that the co-op was painted. Looking good, have you played many games? I’m always on the look out for skirmish games for club nights

Abecedar:

The TT combat building is definitely uninspiring. Could you do a picture of your whole town?

Scar:

Cool stuff!
