[Archive] AGPO returns to the pitch

AGPO:

Well it looks like all this talk of bloodbowl reawakened by “special fondness” for contact sports. I’m taking up rugby again and tomorrow is my first day of pre-season. I’ve been hiting the gym hard for a couple of weeks trying to get fit for it but I’m not sure it’lll prepare me for comming face to face with a lock for the first time in a couple of years. Its also going to be my first time playing with the big boys, as since I last played I’ve come of age. Youth and skill are no match for age and trechery and I’m fully expecting to be taught a lesson or several. My old chiropractor is rubbing his hands together with glee. Anyway wish me luck, I might need it.

Sojourn:

good luck AGPO! careful on the scrum!!! worry

Hashut’s Blessing:

Good luck laddie! Union or league? Lock is the only position I can’t do without getting hurt (I’m not the right shape :D). Just remember, hand offs can be anywhere now (if you’re short, a lot land in your throat…). Personal experience.

Godbob and his jolly rogers:

i’m built like a rugby player it’s just i don’t tackle (i think i’m going to hurt them) so i wasen’t picked don’t do what i do just smash them

Hashut’s Blessing:

I was renowned for hitting their boot laces and continuing running  If I hit above the legs, they would have to go off the pitch, which is fairly amusing because most teams assume I’m a nippy little bugger :stuck_out_tongue: Didn’t earn the nicknames Kamikaze and Suicide for nothing, ya know

Sharkboy:

You madman, but good luck.

Every time I watch rugby I think maybe I should play again, then I remember all the injuries and being denied the chance to play on the wing, at 6’2 I was a glorified battering ram in the second row.

My talents were wasted I tell you.:sick

Hashut’s Blessing:

At 5’2" (5’6" at the moment) I started as hooker  Size doesn’t matter, skill does

AGPO:

Lol thanks for the concern Sojurn!

@ HB: Union of course! We usually play a bit of league in pre season to get the ‘more experienced’ players moving about again. It’s also fun to watch props try to play a running game!

Turns out they want me to play lose forward, which was always my favorite position. It also means I get to play ‘hurt a halfback’ my favorite game! For those who have not seen a game of rugby, the correct procedure for tackling fly halfs (or haircuts as they are also known) is the forarm to the throat, followed by the boot to the crotch and the foot to the face. Obviously if you can slow your stride enough to get the extra stud to the belly then thats all to the good. I’m also going to get a run in the backs which will be a first. I’m worried I don’t quite have the hair for it

Hashut’s Blessing:

Good lad. League isn’t where it’s at. Apparently, a lot of pro unioners are turning to league as they can run through the tackles, he he he

It’d be good if we could all get together, form a team and have a game

AGPO:

Be good fun! What players have we got here anyway? Let’s take bets on where people play!

Sojourn:

wow AGPO, that is one combo move! sounds painful (I’d want to be on your team, not the opponents, hehe)

I remember when I was on a trip to the UK a bunch of Aussies were there for Rugby World Cup and kept trying to explain it all to me (Canada doesn’t really “follow” rugby… like, THEY told ME that Canada had a team competing. lol) what’s the difference between Union and League? Isn’t one rougher or something?

Hashut’s Blessing:

Union involves rucks and malls (big bundles of people crushing each other during/after tackles), whereas League, when tackled, you roll the ball backwards with your foot and play continues… Essentially. After 6(I think) tackles, the ball switches sides. League is more running and Union is more smashing.

Well, I can play anywhere, but my best positions are openside flanker, blindside flanker, hooker, fly-half and inside centre…
