[Archive] All things Destruction

Ghrask Dragh:

Well as my Chaos Dwarf army masses in the background I’m also updating my old Night Goblin army to become an Alliance of Destruction force.

I’ve added a Giant spider and spider riders from that awesome boxed set and started putting that spider together like a kid on Christmas, it’s been so much fun so far it’s great. I’ve converted it slightly as I want to change the load out game to game so I’ve made it as easy as possible to interchange between the flinger, shaman and lots of grots. The base though has taken up most of the time as it’s inadvertently turned into a little diorama of sorts, I only wanted to put a tree on it :~…

It was at this point I was showing the pics to a friend on mine who kindly asked “is there going to be any water in there? Like a skeleton stuck in the water or something?” to which I replied angrily “well there wasn’t going to be!”

But hey, a good idea is a good idea so as this is going to be a frosty/snowy base there shall be a frozen skellie…

I did go on and finish the majority of the base but no pics yet, I’ll post them soon…

Admiral:

Very nice work with the base! Though without the forelimbs complete that Arachnid looks like a tick.

Carcearion:

Gorgeous work! can’t wait to see him painted up!

What color is he gong to be?

tjub:

Sweet, good to have some more AoS-related posts here. Im getting more and more curious about it, nobody around here seems to play it these days thought. Seems since the new 40k dropped it all about Bolters and Chainswords.

Its a beautiful kit you have going there!

Ghrask Dragh:

 Aragnortick!

I asked my boys about the colour (9 and 4) and the black widow won out so black armour with red markings in some form, because I’ll be adding Beastclaw Raiders at some point the base will have a snowy theme to it

I think my favorite thing about AoS is the Alliances, the fact that I have got the option to mix and match from all the armies is great, especially when you look at Order as there loads of amazing choices. That firestorm has some great alliance boxed sets, Tempests Eye in particular

Grimstonefire:

How are you thinking to do the water/ ice? Resin?

Ghrask Dragh:

I was thinking maybe some kind of resin effect but I’ve never used anything like that before so I’m going to do a couple of test pieces. I’ve got an idea for multiple layers so I may go back to pva, I’ll post the test pieces when I do them on the weekend

Ghrask Dragh:

Couple more pics

Admiral:

That base is a piece of art. That’s how it’s done!

How about adding some lichen to the ground and tree bark after painting? Plus the usual varied vegetation which lifts any base. And how about adding some birch pollen as leaves on the ground?

Maybe a cluster of mushrooms somewhere? And some polypores to the tree?

Ghrask Dragh:

Oh yes indeed! Those polypores are a great idea and going straight on!! They’ll look great iced up with some snow on too, as will the mushrooms - these are goblins after all

I’ve got a good bit of sculpting and filling to do before painting and then textures, so my plan is to get those things done this weekend while testing out some ice ideas for the skellie

Admiral:

Neat! You could also add some hanging tufts of fishbone beard lichen (skägglav, Usnea filipendula) to sharpen that old forest impression further. Some image links to illustrate:

One, two, three, four, five, six.

This might be best achieved by sculpting, or perhaps there are other ways to do it? Just a tip. Treebeard.

Abecedar:

Very nice use of the spiders on the base.

Ghrask Dragh:

Thanks guys!

So minor update here but I thought idshow it anyway

First of all the bad news, I spent a good while sculpting polypores onto one side of the tree and they came out great which was a nice surprise because I really struggled with them. It went so well in fact I started sculpting more on the other side, in doing so grabbing and ruining the originals :~:(:sick:mad I’ve been so gutted I can’t bring myself to sculpt them again yet  I’m sure we’ve all done something like this before so thought I’d share

So I tried the colour scheme for the big girl on the smaller spiders and got the bases ready to have idea he big base will look like too…

And I’m very excited to learn how to use this too…

tjub:

Ah, I know the feeling… Its hard to stop when you are in a flow. Have you thought about rearranging the legs of the spiders? I did an old goblin army way back before I joined CDO, but converted the spiders to great success IMO. Its not that hard to separate the legs and repositioning them to a more crawling pose.

Uther the unhinged:

Wow I have always loved that big spider. The base looks awesome and when you put it with the beastclaw raiders it will be a beautiful army. I cant wait to see it painted.

Abecedar:

It certainly does make me want to re-invigorate the poor old night goblins

Ghrask Dragh:

Cheers guys

@Tjub - I did have a go with one as I’m not a huge fan of the uniform look for something like spiders but I’m waning to do this army fairly quickly and I think it would take me a bit too long to convert them all like that (I have 20 to do). Although ironically I’ve had very little time lately to add to this as my boys been ill (he’s doing good now), work has been shockingly bad (damn you apple iwatch!) and the clutch on our car went rendering us without a car and buying a new one as the cost topic was about as much as the car itself :frowning:

But hopefully I’ll be back painting soon

@Uther - It’s an amazing mini and I’m already looking for an excuse to but another, it should be a great army of monsters one day as I also want to add Mangler squigs, Troll Hag and river troll retinue and a Beastclaw Raiders set or 2 to army already including this girl and 3 Giants

It all may well play awful on the tabletop but I’ll enjoy fielding all those monstrous minis

@Abercedar - yes dust them off my friend! I think I’m going to give these guys an old colour scheme, I enjoy giving old minis up to paints on their colour schemes as well giving new minis old colour schemes too

:cheers

Update

A group shot

Started with work on the bases

And then some of the amazing new spells, GW have outdone themselves here

">

Sorry for the crappy phone pics, I’ve nearly finished more spells today so hopefully will get a chance to post those later

I’ve also been playing about with how to paint the spiders and think I’ve got something I like now so all things there are just testers, not going to paint the Riders yet as couldn’t think of a scheme that will fit but I actually quite like just the spiders

Uther the unhinged:

Ooooh spells. They are bigger than I thought. Are they as mice as they seem?

Ghrask Dragh:

They are some of my favourite minis they’ve ever done, I’ve built nearly all of them but only using the ones on the desk.

They go together incredibly, fantastically scaled and every one of them beg to be painted and will look good with minimum effort.
