[Archive] Anti-chaos Chaos Dwarf! Traitor Smith of the Gods

Grimstonefire:

Based on discussion in another thread of how the CD would treat traitors, I decided to make up a special character.  He’s probably right at the extreme for traitors; a weapon and armour smith who’d make weapons for free that would kill everything (including other CD) and has turned his back on Hashut.

Ontop of that he’s really annoyed all the Chaos gods!  So hated by them as well.

Some of the rules are specifically to do with my version of the list, but generally they’re open to generally accepted fluff.

I wanted him to be an anti-chaos hero level character.  The points cost is probably about right.  He may be a legendary weaponsmith, but he isn’t a great fighter.  I was tempted to make him Hate Chaos Dwarfs as well, but that was taking it a bit too far!

Anyway, here we go:

AMLAL FORGEBREAKER:  TRAITOR SMITH OF THE GODS

Who can say what it was that attracted Amlal to leave the safety of Zharr Naggrund and journey north.  Some have speculated that the Chaos Gods whispered to him day and night until his mind was broken.  Few would say that Hashut wanted it so.

Yet journey north he did, travelling for months across the tribal lands of the Kul and Dolgans.  The barbarian warriors would normally slay any that would dare to cross their lands, but their tribal elders all agreed his coming was foretold in the stars, and that his coming was of great significance to all the chaos gods?   So on Amlal marched.  Never knowing where he was going, but always feeling like he was being guided towards some distant and dangerous place.

Finally he reached his destination, some secret place at the end of the world; there he would spend untold millennia learning the secrets of forging Daemon weapons and armour.  For unbeknownst to Amlal, he had been summoned to complete the Circle of Wrath; the five Chaos Dwarf Smiths of the Gods. The four remaining Master Smiths were ancient beyond reckoning, having lived many times longer than they naturally should.  A horrifying vision of mutated flesh and metal, the Master Smiths lived a life of constant work, a life of slavery, never stopping for rest or nourishment.

Hashut had clearly not forsaken Amlal if he had forsaken his god, for his destiny was far greater than he could possibly have imagined.

Having served for centuries chained to an anvil as an apprentice to the Master Smiths, the greater part of his nature eventually began to take control.  Amlal began to despise the cruel Chaos gods, learning of their endless quest for slaughter and eternal dominance from the mutant creatures who supplied the raw metal.  As time went by his thoughts grew to anger and eventually to rage.  Why should he be enslaved for millennia to fashion weapons and armour for a mad apocalypse that would last for all eternity?  Every hammer blow on the anvil drove his hatred of Chaos deeper into his soul.

With a bellow of rage he brought his forge hammers down upon the anvil he was chained to, smashing it asunder and breaking the Circle of Wrath forever.  As he pushed open the doors to the daemonic forge he felt the full fury of the gods decent upon him.  His body was twisted and corrupted, as he fell to the ground a suit of white hot Chaos Armour was bonded to his skin by his vengeful Masters.  Its searing metal cracked and warped, an unimaginable torture.  Yet for all their terrifying powers the Chaos gods had decided to spare the traitor.

Making his way back through the Chaos Wastes he found his journey took him to Karag Dum, one of the lost holds of the Dwarfs.  With single mindedness borne out of wrath, he made his way deep into the hold and to one of the smaller forges.  Using all the skills he had learnt under his cruel masters, he forged the two hammers that would bring order to chaos.  The Dwarfs that occupied this hold in centuries past would have been abhorred that a monstrous abomination such as he would dare to use their forge.

Travelling across the Dark Lands and beyond he seeks out Chaos where he can, aiding his brethren when they help him in this mission, crushing them where they thwart him.  Yet it seems he has not escaped the attention of the Chaos gods, for much to the anger of Amlal they persist in ?~blessing?T him in battle with their divine magic.

AMLAL FORGEBREAKER ??????????????????? Points:  195

Stats:  As Chaos Dwarf Hero

Weapons:  The Hammer of Vengeance and Hammer of Judgement.

Armour:  Chaos Armour (4+ Armour Save).

Special Rules:

Amlal Forgebreaker will take one Hero choice.  He cannot be the army General.  He must be fielded exactly as presented here, no extra equipment or magic items can be bought for him.

Will of the Gods:

Who can say what the motives are of the Gods.  Perhaps by showing him favour they are testing the strength of their own followers, or helping him to destroy those of a rival God?

At the start of the battle roll D6 and consult the chart below.  Amlal will benefit from the attentions of his patron God for the duration of the battle.

1  Nurgle +1 Toughness, +1 Armour Save

2  Slaanesh +2 Attacks

3  Khorne +1 Weapon Skill, +2 Strength

4  Tzeentch Magic Resistance (3)

5-6  Hashut 4+ Ward Save

Bane of Chaos

The warping effects of time that can happen within the Chaos Wastes mean that Amlal may have spent millennia brooding on his hatred of chaos in all its forms.

Hatred for Daemons of Chaos, Warriors of Chaos and Beasts of Chaos.  Amlal will re-roll misses in close combat when attacking enemy Chaos Dwarf Hellcannon or Soul Reaper crews.

Abhorred

Amlal is hated and despised by all Chaos Dwarfs for his past allegiance to the gods of Chaos.  Dawi Zharr generals only suffer his presence because of his prowess as a warrior, although keeping their own troops from executing him is often a battle in itself.

Enemy Chaos Dwarfs suffer Hatred towards Amlal Forgebreaker.

Hammer of Vengeance:

Forged to be the bane of Daemons, this legendary hammer is a mighty weapon of destruction, capable of sending even Greater Daemons back to the abyss.

Hand Weapon.  Anything with the Daemonic special rule that has been wounded by Amlal and is beaten in combat must add D6 to their Daemonic Instability test rolls (taking the result to a maximum of 12).

Hammer of Judgement:

Amlal Forgebreaker can be counted amongst the greatest of living Chaos Dwarf Weaponsmiths, not that he would ever be acknowledged as such.  So finely crafted is the Hammer of Judgement that paradoxically it is the very essence of anti-magic.  Only those who are attuned to see the winds of magic can perceive the vortex of darkness swirling around this weapon.

Additional hand weapon.  Wizards wounded by Amlal suffer -2 to their Armour Save.

minty:

Hand Weapon. Anything with the Daemonic special rule that has been wounded by Amlal and is beaten in combat must deduct D6 from their Daemonic Instability test.

why deduct? may I ask, if it’s designed to banish deamons, why does it make them less likely to poof.

Grimstonefire:

Ah… yes… You spotted the obvious mistake! ;)  Edited.

Added that the maximum can still only be 12, if he was a lord level character I’d have made it 18.

What do you think generally of the fluff and rules?

minty:

The fluff is good, give you a feeling of who he is, but I have to ask, what army is he for? I mean chaos dwarves hate him, so he wouldn’t be in there army.

Grimstonefire:

He is a traitor, there’s no forgiving that.

But he is still a Chaos Dwarf weapon smith, and he would have a lot of knowledge about chaos and daemons etc.  Knowledge about an enemy is a powerful thing.

I guess I could look at re-phrasing it so its very clear why some CD would want him around.  He is a very unusual character. Maybe some sign that he is favoured by Hashut?

Having an anti-chaos character means some parts of the chaos dwarfs would have to hate him, as they are chaos in some ways.

Arakagaan Calasson:

Make it so Sorcerors and units they join hate him,as they are the chaotic sector of the army.

Ghrask Dragh:

I like it!

The idea of a brutal Chaos Dwarf standing there with armour scolded and bonded to his skin with great Axes in each hand is as evil as it gets I think… are you gonna make this one? cos if you don’t I will

Could this guy maybe be like a Dogs of War character? only used in certain armies (the evil ones :)), just a thought.

Grimstonefire:

@Arakagaan Calasson

It depends on your definition of what ‘Chaos’ Dwarfs means.  CD Sorcerers use ‘dark magic’.  Dark Elves and Skaven also use ‘dark magic’.  So its not as clear cut as that.

The hatred from other chaos dwarfs is not really based on his hatred of all things chaos, its because he turned his back on Hashut and was actively helping the enemy.

So having it only restricted to sorcerers+unit joined is not what I had in mind.  Those who actually help chaos/ daemons/ chaos gods should fear his wrath.

I guess I’ll have to think carefully about how far his hatred of chaos would go.  For instance, would he go and attack the CD daemon forges??  Or would he agree that binding them against their will was actually a good thing?  How much loyalty to the Chaos Dwarfs would he show?

@Ghrask

Feel free to make it!  I’ll be curious to see what models and bits you use.  It was hammers btw as he was a smith, but axes would do

I guess, ironically, he would be considered a ‘good’ DOW character as he’s anti chaos.  But he is also evil…  so all the traditional evil chaos armies couldn’t take him…?

That would leave the list as possibly High Elves, Empire, Lizardmen, Bretonnians, Skaven, Dark Elves, Vampire Counts, Tomb Kings, Ogre Kingdoms and Orcs & Goblins?

Of these there are some I would imagine he would dislike or who wouldn’t want to work with him.  If he’s partly anti-magic there wouldn’t be anyone he would want to work with, but then he wouldn’t be DoW.

I think it would only leave:

Empire, Skaven, Dark Elves, Ogre Kingdoms and Orcs & Goblins?

As a special character this is a tricky one to sort out fluffwise. Normally that part is easy.

Ghrask Dragh:

Grim
:D of course, don't know why I wrote axes :D

He is a difficult one to fit into other armies isn't he, hell, he's a difficult one to fit into Chaos Dwarfs :)

I had some ideas of a psychotic looking dwarf, covered in scars and burns, bald with a beard of chains :o a bit far fetched I know, I might scribble down some things even though I haven't sketched anything in a while, always good to be inspired :)

slev:

Just a quick background point, where would you tie this in with the other anti-Chaos Chaos gods such as Malal, Zuvassin & Nechoho? He will likeley be working for one of the first two, even if unintentionally…

Grimstonefire:

Malal… Amlal …

Zuvassin & Nechoho? Never heard of these before?

slev:

Malal the Doomed One is the Chaos god who hates Chaos and seeks to destroy it.

Zuvassin the Undoer is the Chaos god seeks to undo the works of everyone and everything, including the works of both the Chaos gods (promoting Law) and the gods of Law (promoting Chaos). Oh, and those of his own followers.

Nechoho the Doubter is the Choas god who wishes to destroy religion. The irony of his situation is not lost on him.

These three are said to be extreme incarnations of Chaos, where it turns back on itself, such is the nature of Chaos. Don’t forget that the needs of Chaos and of Law are not moderated by concerns over good and evil. Similarly, the followers of the Young gods are potentially evenly threatened by each.

Grimstonefire:

Those are all awesome! I wonder if GW will ever delve into them again? Anyone have Liber Chaotica?

slev:

Yes, I do, save the Slaanesh book, which they under-printed.

Arakagaan Calasson:

Malal the Doomed One is the Chaos god who hates Chaos and seeks to destroy it.

Do you have any more info? Symbolism, colours, or followers? I just thought he’d be awesome to base an army on.

cornixt:

He has been abandoned by GW, supposedly for copyright reasons (they don’t own it, and won’t pay for it)

Arakagaan Calasson:

Yea, but from when he existed something more might have been said about him.

Kera foehunter:

i love the this idea,  if he had sea legs i could use him!!Trators smith rules, i need cool cannons!! nothing say love like a price on your head.

slev:

Yea, but from when he existed something more might have been said about him.

Details here.
It's a shame the copyright is disputed, it's a cracking idea.

The other thing I'd love to see though is more done with the gods of Law.

Grimstonefire:

I meant to ask, Zuvassin & Nechoho are they considered both canon and acceptable?  I.e. should I modify the Will of the Gods table to include one (Hashut only on a 6)?
