[Archive] Anyone ever used goblins?

Grimstonefire:

Has anyone ever used goblins in their list?

Granted they may not be the best choice, but then they don’t need any converting…

Bassman:

I’d like to but I really cannot find a reason but modelwise or fluffwise.

Hobgoblins are really better pointwise… the only reason would be for spears… not enough a good reason to drop hobgoblins.

It would be interesting if somebody points out a reason to field them…

Warhammerman:

IMO they just don’t compare to hobgoblins pointwise. Although I don’t play CDs I have seen the ravening hordes list and hobgoblins are better pointswise.

Rock Bottum:

Goblins are cheaper with shortbows and lightarmour then hobgoblins with bows and lightarmour,

So more arrows for less points, but the range is worse

I never used them yet

cornixt:

In 6th they were okay since you could take them with spears or as a cheaper-than-HGs missile unit to protect war machines and such. The 7th ed O&G book just makes them way overpriced so there is no reason to take them.

Neil:

They aren’t as bad as you might think, if you take a big unit of 30 with LA, HW and Shield, thats a 4+ save in comabt plus, usually +5 static combat res, but having said that for not many more points you could have 25 orcs with the same equipment plus choppas, who can dish out a lot more pain, or 25 Hobgoblins, who are slightly better fighters and a bit braver.

I have never used them, and as far as I can see the only reasons to use them would be for fluff purposes, or if you don’t have the models to take anything better.

Loki:

I have only ever used hobgoblins and black orcs in my cd army and now that i have enough CD warriors the blck orcs dont get a look in unless the game is 3000 points

Gar Shadowfame:

i find goblin usefull fielded as minimum size unit, in Indy list i use rabble (which is basicaly the same) although my recent uber cheese rooster does not have any trash

Astranagant:

I’ve certainly considered it, using NGs as “counts as” Goblins, dunno how well that would fly.

I certainly have a crap-ton of the poor little NGs (so much that I started building an NG army, which might even be of legal-size by now).

Joshmohr:

I have “Used” them. A unit of 20 where next to one of my enemy’s unit, so i fired my blunderbuss, destroying them and the enemy. :Hashut

The Brain:

I have never used them. I don’t really want to give up a special choice for something that I can get cheaper as a core and for less points. I can see it fluff wise but I would not give up gits, bolt throwers, or death rockets for them.

Gar Shadowfame:

thing is RH is soo old, in 6th ed there werent so many “does not count as core” and goblins should be like that.

Bassman:

I have "Used" them. A unit of 20 where next to one of my enemy's unit, so i fired my blunderbuss, destroying them and the enemy. :Hashut

Joshmohr
Actually you cannot shoot your own troops, even tought it would be soo cool to shoot your slaves LOL :hat off

Willmark:

What kills them for us is the fact is they are specials for us. If they were Core that would make more sense. Being Core however would create even more “spam fodder” taht hobgoblins already fill. in a way they are perhaps the most “odd man out” in our list.

That said I do have a 40 goblin unit ready to paint

Swissdictator:

I’d only take Goblins if I could take their wolf riders or spider riders (as they can be fielded at a small size).

Otherwise Hobgoblins trump every time. Plus if you want spears, use Orcs. The better toughness and leadership is worth it.

dncswlf:

It really depends on what type of goblin unit you take… I don’t have the most recent edition army list books, but you used to be able to field units with nets and clubs, units with cave squigs, units with fanatics… Night goblins are perhaps the most fun for the points cost, but they very rarely do any damage themselves, and act as a screen until your real guys get in to clean up…

Also, I think Chaos Dwarfs would have no issue lashing out with blunderbusses if some puny goblins were in the way… afterall… we’ve got reserves

Willmark:

If its a O&G army then yes thats right, but having no characters in the unit makes them redundant as there is nothing that they can do that the hobgoblins cant and cheaper too.

symondhelly:

Goblins is very useful and its cheaper too. A unit of 30 where next to one of my enemy’s unit, so I fired my blunderbuss, destroying them and the enemy. Goblin masks have a simple explanation: Goblins are everywhere.

Da Crusha:

I have never used them. they’re only good if I use them with spears, and  I’ll never give up a special choice to use them with short bows, short bows just suck!

Hi Members,
It seems like you are looking at Goblins one dimensionally. Here's a couple of interesting things they can do:
1. Hold and contest quarters. Bury a couple of minimum strength (20 point) units in heavy terrain in your territory. Send out 4 units ( again 20 points) of goblins to grab and hold the enemy's quarters. At 20 points a unit who will bother with them early in the battle? Late in the battle they'll be entrenched so now for 120 points you'll be able to contest 400.
2, Hobgoblin Darts Take 8 minimum units of 10 (160 points) and arrange them in 5 ranks of 2 ( not 2 ranks of 5). Shoot them out towards the enemy. What one unit can do is block an enemy unit's front at an angle. If it charges the HGs it will expose it flank to a counter charge and if it doesn't then 20 points can tie up 250 points.
Also the manouverable Dart can hit an enemy unit in the flank during a multi-unit attack. This will take away ranks and add +1 for the all important CR.
Just a few tactical thoughts.

Since I'm new here can anyone guess my other army?
