[Archive] Anyone use a Taurus?

Groznit Goregut:

Hi All,

I’m looking at various lists that people are using and I don’t see anyone using a Taurus (Bale or Great) or even a Lammasu. Just too vulnerable to cannon balls? Anyone use them?

I know the Bale Taurus Burning Body still gives the -1 to Wound, which means cannon balls won’t wound on a 1-2. Also, Fire Lvl 4 will have a good chance of healing him, as long as he doesn’t die in one hit. With 5 wounds, that’s a 1-4 that he won’t.

If anyone does, is there any advice to using one?

flashgordon:

chuck him in the flank and chuck an anvil unit in the front, he should maul away quite happily, you are right with the lore of fire, it useful, i like giving my lord a healing potion, make the pair of them quite hard to shift

NoisyAssassin:

In general Lords on mounts aren’t the greatest option (especially because of cannons), but they shouldn’t be unusable.

Also note that Burning Body now makes non-magical attacks re-roll successful wounds, so for each shot you have two 1/6 chances for it to not wound. Not quite as great as 1/3 chance. The real problem though is whether you want to gamble your Lvl 4 with only a 4+ ward vs cannons. But if you don’t face a lot of cannon-fire then you should be in much better shape!

I love my Bale taurus, but in a tournament setting, I wouldn’t recommend it. I played against dwarfs and empire, while trying to get the bale taurus on the flank it was one shotted with a cannon each time, and thus losing me the game automatically have a 600+ point deficit. Against the dwarf player my bale taurus was a few inches away from making the charge when he was taken out. The rest of my army demolished him and by turn 5 he kept fleeing my charges from my destroyer, and infernal guard and I was unable to finish off his units ( he had two units of less than 5 guys from 40 one of those were hammerers)

He’s fun to use in a friendly game, but tournament setting, go against it.

I used a lord on a lammasu in a tournament. he did quite well. I used the terrain to stay out of sight from the cannons and wasn’t really shot at by normal ranged fire. and my opponants faces were quite funny when i told them i had a lvl 4 riding a lvl 2.

next time i’m going to try the taurus.

My taurus is about 50 times larger than my lammasu, as it's on a flying base and the lammasu is tiny.... So I imagine it's much easier to hide. Not to mention you can't rely on hiding behind terrain especially in a tournament

Actually, the Bad Dice podcast (that knows some of the guys from each company) said that Forgeworld can't errata anything that was in another book. The Taurus was in Storm of Magic and that ruling stays. So, Burning Body is only changed for K'Daai...

I don't understand like this. I understand that only the rules for the GREAT taurus aren't changed (because the great taurus is a GW creation in SoM, and thus, can't be errated without the agreement of GW).

The bale taurus is specifically quoted in the QA...

Both are good, but suffer from all the downside of mounted monster... So they are harder to rentabilize in competitive game than a sorcerer prophet on foot...

Bale Taurus Changed in the FAQ for LoA

Great Taurus Did not Change.

I am going to try using a Lord on Bale Taurus this coming week versus Empire. We are going to play 2800pt with a 700pt Monster & Magic selection. Thinking of bringing 4 Destroyers to the table to take pressure off of him and hopefully keep him from getting cannonballed in the first round.

Da Crusha:

4 destroyers! 1300 points of rare, you must be playing a 5200 point game minimum.

Storm of magic... With monstruous arcana... (2 flying destroyer! Ouch!)

burock:

i find taurus lords very effective when playing an “in your face” style game: Minimum core, no WMs (with the possible exception of hellcannon), lots of fast, hard hitting troops. In this way, even the armies which have superior firepower like dwarfs and empire might have a hard time if they face a bad round of shooting or two.

but as said above, in tournament environment, it is too much of a risk to field a taurus lord.

Tom The Cruel:

I must admit I’ve had my Lord on Bale Taurus smash through lots of block units with ease.

Maybe luck but Ive broken High Elf Sea Guard, Dark Elf Spearmen, Corsairs and… ogres.

I think he is an easy target for war machines yes but due to his massive move you can try and “pick” your targets

:yar

Dezmord:

My own Sorcerer-Prophet on Bale Taurus actually had very mixed results: in some games, he just stomped everything he got in contact with, and in other games, he only left a bloody smear on the ground after being shot. I think in not only depends on the armies you’re typically facing, but also on the amount/size of terrain you usually play with - hiding/not hioding the beast.

propervillanz:

I ended up using one of these babies along with 2 Destroyers and an assortment of War Machines. I think they are pretty survivable especially if you get the first turn. Make your enemy fear your big beasties and war machines and they will ignore your Bale Taurus long enough for you to get him into combat, where he can be surprisingly resistant and down right devastating.

NoisyAssassin:

Yeah, 2 Destroyers and Taurus lord would be a target priority nightmare for even a gunline army.
