[Archive] Appraisal ideas?

MaghDhoum:

Hullo . First post here.

A friend has offered to sell me his Chaos Dwarf army, not been used in many years, and I am interested. (I’ve actually kinda coveted it for awhile.) But I have no idea of what its worth.

It is nicely painted.

Here’s what he has-

1 general, 1 sorcerer, I Great Taurus, I deathrocket w/crew, 2 hobgoblin boltthrowers w/crew, I earthshaker cannon w/crew, 6 bull centaurs, 6 hobgoblin wolfriders w/bows, 20 chaos dwarf warriors, 15 blunderbusses, 20 gits and 15 black orcs.Unpainted: 20 warriors w/command, 1 lord, 1 deathrocket w/crew, 1 hobgoblin wolfrider with ax, 4 gits, 5 black orcs and 2 blunderbusses

I realize not very useful, nor nearly a complete army, in its present state under 8th, but would be an interesting project. I can paint up the warriors to make a unit of 40,have a second earthshaker, and can add another 20 Black Orcs plus a mess of hobbo wolf riders…

Anyway, does anyone know how to estimate a fair price for this lot, or where I might ask? Thanks.

I don't know about fair price but consider this:

Gits, Blunderbusses and Wolfriders are insanely rare and expensive. And here you have lots of them.

Centaurs are fairly rare and fairly pricey

Blorcs (if the old plastic monopose ones) are dirty cheap, you can buy heaps of them out of e-bay for nothing.

This is a great starting army. You'll have 2 blocks of IGs, heroes, 3 warmachines (Earthshaker can be used as Hellcannon, Magma or Dreadquake), Hobbos and some Wolfriders (which can be used as Khans on wolf). It's a great starting point and you won't need much to push the army up to 2500 points.

If I were you I would wine about your friend being a friend, tell him how much you like him, how old and strong is your bond, how many times you went trough difficult times together, talk about your aching foot, about how better you would feel with a CD army, talk about the swarm of locusts that ate all the corn fields at your uncle's farm... These kind of things. Maybe he will drop the price :).

Bloodbeard:

It’s a really large block of miniatures, and some fairly rare ones too. Making a market realistic price is pretty hard. The best thing (as a seller) would be to split it up and sell it on ebay - getting a higher price.

So the best way to offer your friend a fair price? Ask the guys on this forum (who has lots of these old minis) what they would give for the lot. Like Nicodemus or Fuggit Khan.

But I’m with Skink. Try using the “They’re just collecting dust at your home, I’ll see them completed abd take them to battles once more” argument.

And ask him “What price or trade would make you fell “not cheated”?” And see if you’re hapy with that price.

Thanks guys for the quick responses. I will follow those leads. If those quoted, or anyone else similar, happens to see this a private message would be great.

Willmark:

The biggest question I have s what is he asking for the lot? That will help us gauge the whole army in terms of $/£

Well, I'm no expert on a fair appraisal price...but I think I can give you a fair 'recommendation' price/value.
Keep the following in mind: the old plastic Chaos Dwarfs are not in much of demand, they're ugly, they don't rank up properly, they suck.
So I would not pay more than $1 for each of the plastic ones. Other singular models are very rare, and will easily fetch up to $18 per model (although it may be also easily construed as extortionist prices)...these ones are examples of the rarer ones:

Even the humble Hobgoblins have rare models, in fact this guy is so rare that I don't have one, even after 20 years of collecting them (yes, they're on Ebay, but I refuse to pay extortionist pricing):

Also keep in kind that Black Orcs, Gits and Hobbo bolthrowers are not in the Tamurkhan army book, so you may have no use for them...but the Gits still make awesome Hobbo units.
So...what is it worth? Based on your list, throwing in the variables of rare individual models, painted vs non-painted, etc...I would guess a conservative low @ $420...
Ask you buddy what he wants for them, what he thinks is fair, go from there.
I'm hoping you get them, and share a blog here on CDO for all of us (and you) to enjoy...Big Hats are one of GW most unique armies, and lots of fun :hat off

Actually, that's not entirely true for Gits. While it is true that they no longer exist as their own unit, the generic Hobbos in Tamurkhan do have the option to take additional hand weapons, so in spirit they do exist and most likely the option was added so those with the old Git minis could still use them with the new rules.

MaghDhoum:

Thank you very much FK.

I can not say what price he was asking, he has no more idea than I have. We have known each other and gamed together forever, so neither is out to job the other.

I am actually going to direct him here so he can see the discussion. And I am going to offer $420. which does seem reasonable (as I say, they are nicely painted - the guy on the bull taurus finished top ten in Golden Demon, but that was something like 15 years ago.)

Should anyone else choose to jump the price that would be fine . I’d really like them, but I can live without them and if he can do appreciably better then fair enough.

Thanks again.

So it looks like I'm getting the lot for $450. He also is throwing in some unopened blisters he found of another lord, hobgoblin lord on wolf, hobgoblin archers with command and some blunderbusses.
Now I have to ransack this site to see what I can make with them.
Thanks to all, especially to Khan Fug. That offer I made still stands. Should be a cool project. Cheers.

Congratulations on being the new proud owner of a Chaos Dwarf army :cheers

Have fun with them...and I'm hoping you'll share some pics and/or a blog of them for all of us here on CDO to enjoy as well

Thanks. Yes, the unopened 'extras' tossed in a bag seem to be pretty valuable as well. They included 3 CD Heros , one SB and musician, wolf rider hero, other hob hero, and a hob command pack including the exact fig you had referenced in your earlier post.
So with 2 20 Cdwarf warrior units, one 20 blunderbuss, 10 bull centaurs, Sorc Lord on Gt taurus and artillery , (plus some Hobbos and wolf rider chaff), as Skink said should be enough to put something on the table, at least with a couple of Forge World add ons. Thanks again to all. -MgD

MaghDhoum:

Being new to all this, I confess I was amazed at the ‘extortionate prices on EBay’ thread.

Given what was thrown in as the ‘unpainted extra stuff’ in the CDwarf army I bought, looks like there was a little treasure trove of fairly valuable (and yes, i know those EBay prices are silly) stuff here.

Hmmm? a bit out of my depth here.  MgD
