[Archive] Are the White Dwarfs getting better lately?

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull:

The battle report in this month issue is good, I have talked a little to both guys in the ETC. The orcs&goblins is really lovely painted, the skin is great on them.

slev:

The problem is this:

We old-schoolers want articles that include new rules, wierd scenarios and such.

These are a nightmare for the company as there is a need to keep them in print and accessible when it goes OOP in order to include the newbies, so it either goes to the web (resources) or they create a compendium of some kind, which never sells well these days.

The guys at the studio know this is the case, so try and include a few things like this to reward us, but it’s a fine ballencing act.

The fact that an old writing collegue is on the staff now does fill me with hope though.

The good old days of the Warhammer Chronicles were awesome. They introduced new rules and things while keeping the majority of the crazy stuff out of the tournaments. It is a shame they stopped them. I don?Tt know how the did in other areas but my local store always sold out of them. I can see how keeping all those things in print would be a problem for them, but taking those articles out really cut down on the content of the magazine.

slev:

That was the problem though, selling out of them.

They needed to have them constantly available for the newbies or be deluged with complaints.

It’s a no-win situation.

Which is why you have web-pages in this day and age.

I say it all the time. GW's problem is in not understanding that WD isn't a publication for the new gamer. It takes time to get so into the game you have an interest in the wide offering WD has to have. I see this all the time: "WD didn't have anything interesting this month, I only play [insert army] they never have articles on

I agree. Most of the problems stem from when they got ride of the other WD staffs and the UK took over the whole thing. That is when it shifted from a veteran mag to a sales catalogue. For the past year or two I have not cared for it at all. It seems like it is mostly LOTR and 40k Apocalypse. I love 40K but I never understood the reason for Apocalypse, other than GW selling more stuff we don?Tt need to play the game that already exists. Not a big LOTR fan at all.

Uzkul Werit:

The battle report looks promising this time but I’m not sure I’d spend four pounds on it.

Baggronor:

I still miss the fat bloke days though.
Yup :(

Swissdictator:

Who is the flat bloke? Mike Butcher? When did Butcher last write articles, as I seem to remember he did write articles for White Dwarf. If so, that is cool as I see him quite a bit at tournaments as he is from the same state I am.

Perturabo:

Paul Sawyer. He was the editor of the UK White Dwarf years back. During that period WD was actually worth buying. There was Warhammer chronicles and Chapter Approved for cool new scenarios and rules, and Mike Walker was a regular contributor (I enjoyed his articles, at least). Everything was so much better… eyes mist over

torn:

i read through issue 145 (i think) today. much more content than nowadays - librarians in space crusade and advanced space crusade, as well as a 5 mission campaign. 3 mission campaign for hero quest as well as characters, and the same converted for advanced hero quest. both with rules for new badguys. Stats for genestealers in rogue trader, as well as quite a few pages of background material. and this is only about half the mag!

also i noticed a terminator and tyranids boxed set for £11.99 - as far as i remember 5 tyranid warriors, 10 stealers, about 20 hybrids, 5 terminators, librarian, 10 scouts, possibly something else. wish this was available now!

slev:

Torn: Factoring inflation and decreases in real value of money, this same box would cost around £50 in today’s market.

Further, those models where functional, but not very good if we’re honest.

I agree on WD being no use for beginners, and I’d love to see OOP content required to run certain armies go on the web.

The thing is that content does appear on the web eventually, so why not let WD take that content and publish it a month or two early? Non-essential content need not be available on-line (weird scenarios & special rules), just things like Army Lists.

Swissdictator:

@slev I would like to see some sort of archive of scenarios, campaigns, etc. That could be very useful.

I almost wonder if it’d be better for them (and us) to turn WD into a webszine. It could eliminate a lot of costs, though would it be a dent in advertising? They could also sell ad space if needed, imagine CDO or Rites of War throwing in for an ad… or for online campaigns to get the word out. Which would help promote the hobby.

Heck even if in the current format, opening up to advertising like that could be healthy even if it isn’t all that profitable. By promoting independent campaigns, etc they could promote interest and show how alive the Warhammer community is, etc.

torn:

the terminators werent brilliant but the scouts and tyranid warriors were ok and the genestealers not a lot different at all. Of course there are things like inflation in the cost of everything, but it seems like everyones pay hasnt gone up that much in comparison.

I like white dwarf as a magazine, because i work away from home a lot in hotels or with a lot of travelling, so sometimes i need a good magazine to read. Because of this i am also more likely to read all the articles, and not just a few that might interest me from the start. I think online content is a good idea, but a physical magazine sits on shelves and attracts attention.

Patrikson:

I miss that orc paintboy/docter thing that used to be in White Dwarf and he had his own Collum

Perturabo:

I like the Battlefield Challenges ides in standard bearer this month. New crazy scenarios and actual player feedback can’t be bad.

I'd like to point out one thing here. When we discuss the quality of WDs people should be aware that there was a world of difference between the US and UK ones for a while. In many ways the regionalisation of WD (and other GW stuff) has always annoyed me as it puts the cstomrs in different positions. In Europe the consolidation of "local" staff and webstaff wasn't quite as noticeable. The WD didn't have all the cool stuff we found in the few issues of US WDs we got hold of to begin with so the downgrade was much smaller. I wouldn't blame the UK staff, in so far as the decision to change direction came from higher up. And just for the record saying the magazine started sucking after Paul Sawyer left, and it quickly degenerated then IMNSHO, probably also can be found in the reorganisation and a failed new strategy or whatever they introduced.
