[Archive] Are the White Dwarfs getting better lately?

Swissdictator:

Skittles and I have been starting to like White Dwarf more and more, as the latest issues do seem to be much better. Which is why I’m probably them more often, especially next month’s which will be Skaven based most likely.

Just wondering what other people thought.

Border Reiver:

Yeah, I think they have. The painting articles are much better and the tactics articles have been interesting with more than just the basics in them. The Battlereports could use a bit more polishing and we could do with some of the terrain making and modeling articles, but generally the mags been getting better.

SteveM:

I looked at a friend’s August issue of WD and thought it looked ok, but there was not US$9 of value contained within.  I also will be getting the September issue in account of the Skaven, by some strange coincidence the last WD I purchased was WD269 which covered the last few of the 6th edition Skaven minis to be released in June 2002 (cover price was US$5 back then).

Crube:

This months is pretty darned good to be honest. A Space Hulk Battle Report, a WFB battle report, between 2 tournament gamers (one of whom I know, and used to be my part timer when i worked in the Derby store :D) some decent painting articles… yeah, quite a bit to actually read this month…

Perturabo:

I think there has been some improvement lately. I’m liking the old war stories series, and standard bearer can be quite interesting. I still miss the fat bloke days though. Back then pretty much every article was interesting.

Gelli:

I have to agree wholeheartdly (not the best speller :P) For a long period of time they were pure unadultarated crap, but I read them from cover to cover now and they have material which i’ll use later on. Unlike the stuff when cities of death was around and the like.
@ Perturabo,
War stories is good but sometimes Jervis repeats him self abit, eg: apoclypse and how fantastic tourneys are. Things like that wizard painting comp are what make for great reading. Agree with the battle reports needing a bt of polish. Though using non GW employees is great, they haven’t done that for awhile.

Kera foehunter:

I have not bought one since they raised the price !! its to much

and until they lower it i will not buy one

Lord Archaon:

I liked the July White Dwarf, that contained a 3 stage Empire battle report with fluff. I try to buy WD every now and then, because it isn’t too expensive yet (it costs 6$ here), but i definitely wouldn’t buy it for 9$.

Loki:

I have to say yes and no, the content has improved a great day and every thing is more in detail which is what we all want the and the painting guides are much better and easier to follow, but i have found over the last few months that the mag and its contents are very one sided one month all 40k the next all warhammer then back to 40k if they can find a balance between the two it would be great as i am not interested that much in 40k any more i have to wait a month for some good warhammer stuff in the next issue, i have had a look at the new white dwarf and the space hulk stuff in it is great so cant wait to get my hands on it

Dont bother getting Septembers one, theres nothing about Skaven in there except what has been seen here. November will be the one you want for the Skaven i think

The Brain:

I have seen the past few at the store and there is nothing in it to make me want to drop $9 for it. For that price they can keep it, becuase there is nothing in any of the current lines that I want anything to do with.

Kera foehunter:

I thought a 6.00 it was a little high

Thats what I say it's a magazine not a hardback novel.

slev:

In the UK at least (keep in mind minumum wage is something like £5.20):

WD: £4.50 (magazines in general are around £4-£5)

Soft Back book: £4-£6

Hard BAcked Book: £10-£15

FWIW September’s is full of Space Hulk. October’s is apparently the Space Wolves issue.

Willmark:

Yeah $9.00 is getting a bit insane for what you get. Every notice their is hardly any terrain making articles anymore. Not a suprise when GW wanst you to buy theirs. Their right to do so, opur right not to buy it.

Wonder if it actually has something useful like an extra mission or if it is just advertising...

torn:

no extra missions, bu the battle report is really intereting, and the painting guide should be very useful. I only decided to get it after reading a masterclass guide on the GW site and knew there would be one here. My first copy bought for 3 years, and my 3rd copy in the last 8 i think. Although i can only comment on the half of the hulk issue i have read it is up to a better standard than it used to be.

Willmark:

I think everyone is (mostly) in agreement that it has gotten somewhat better, its a case of its still a far cry from its glory days.

SteveM:

I looked through the September issue at the FLGS today, about 25% of it was Space Hulk and another 20% or so was Planetary Empires.  There was a blurb on Skaven (already reported here at CDO) and a bit on Azhag with a pretty large battle report.  I don’t think I would have spent US$5 for it much less the US$9 cover price, but a Space Hulk fan would love this month’s issue.

The Brain:

I don’t understand why anyone would buy it for a Space Hulk Battle Report, it’s a board game that would be like reading a report on Manopoly. Oh well they won’t get my money, that is for BIG HATS ON EBAY :hat
