[Archive] Are you a painter a gamer or both

Canix:

Both ,however because my mates prefer ancients and napoleonic i only get a few warhammer and 40k games in a year .I hope to play more this summer and may even go to gamesday

Kera foehunter:

yea i also hope to play more this spring and summer

Captain Crayon:

i like them both

though i don’t play very often at the moment, even though i have a shiny new table.

Still trying to get through the terrain making and army painting done for the 10,000 point orcs& lizardmen vs Empire and dwarfs inaugeral battle of doom!

Pyro Stick:

Ive never enjoyed the setting up of a game and the writing up of an army list. It takes too long and im sick of the army by the time the game is about to start! So im much more of a painter and thats what i enjoy more but i still enjoy the occasional game.

rabotak:

IĀ“m definitely a gamer and tactician, then a collector, and far off a painter… it really is a chore for me, it takes a lot of time and effort to make the minis come up to my standards… it also takes a lot of discipline to overcome my lazyness… on the other hand, I can waste hours, sometimes whole days to work on lists and tactics

jolpis:

i love to sculpt models, but i get bored whin its time to paint the army.

i really like playing but i dont have any connections to my local Games workshop, since its so far away but i play (lose) aigenst friends and really enjoy it

Oooohh... you could sculpt miniatures for me... I like have miniatures and I like to paint. Mostly.

I'd like to be able to sculpt but it falls down on the annoying part where I can't bring myself to do it because I'm not very good at it so never get any better as I don't practice. Being a perfectionist has it drawbacks sometimes.
I do like all parts of the hobby, even some not listed in the poll! I.e. the background aspect. I've spent many a boring boatride writing upp army background or shortstories. Even an ongoing narrative for my more passionate projects.
As to painting I find that when I'm enthusiastic painting flows but I'll usually hit a brickwall at some point. Usually some part that's hard to reach and complicated so takes forever and I get fed up with the miniature.

Kera foehunter:

well i think im more of a converter than a painter or player

Sojourn:

I’m not surprised but I’m 3.03% of the site… the 1 person who has never played but enjoys painting and modelling! lol

I like painting though, it’s how Xander convinced me to look at these little guys. imagining colour schemes and making unique minis is probably my favourite part. The rules seem confusing (from what I’ve read editing WOH anyways)

Sojurn - you should get Xander to play a small 250 point or 500 point game with you - its a great game and made even better when the minis you have invested all that effort painting and converting are scooting round a battlefield laying waste to everything.

grupax:

i mostly enjoy playing a painted army that i’ve done and am happy with, though I’m not a big fan of painting hours nonstop…
there’s a huge satisfaction in playing with an army you painted to your liking

Kera foehunter:

If i was a painter my army would be painted by now

i never said i was good at it =)
but i really enjoy sculpting, but i oftenly mess it upp since my cd's are my first time using Greenstuff.

dedwrekka:

I’m a converter. I’ve had bad luck with painting, and can barely paint anything on flat surfaces anyways. I’ve had a lot better results with washes though, so they just might convert me.

Joshmohr:

I prefer molding a BIT more.

Keep at it my painting used to be awful
You need to ( in my opionion) pick simple colour schemes and try and not do too much detail ( less is more to start with) then just base coat and tidy then wash each color ( new be inks are great) let each ink dry well before doing next one. I then wash the whole model with a small amount of GW devlan mud (note this won't work if you want a clean look e.g. High Elves) which brings the model together. The other thing that can help is a good basing scheme.
Doing the above had meant that after afew years of occasional painting I am now happy to put the models I have painted down onto gaming tables
